You are probably seeing the root tabs leeching from the substrate and increasing your nitrates.

I dont think so, it was like this before I replanted last month.  there had not been any plants for over 6 months.

I would stop dosing easy green. It’s basically nitrates in a bottle. If your nitrates are 20 and above that’s basically natural fertilizer. Also I wouldn’t worry about nitrates unless it’s above 80, I’ve heard that anything under 100ppm is safe.

Thanks Sora, I am using the Easy Green because I just planted the Water Wisteria and hope it will start rooting and convert to underwater plant.

hornwort and duckweed are my absolute go tos for removing nitrate, but be careful as once you introduce duckweed, it is very hard to get rid of so make sure you want it.

Thanks I might try some hornwort, I had some duckweed hitch a ride with some other plants but I had surgery last November and could not take good care of things and I lost all my plants and the duckweed.

  4. I am trying to keep my Nitrates below 40ppm but not having much luck.  I have a 80 gallon tank with 4 Emperor 400 filters running at about 1/3 flow. I have about 12 Water Wisteria plants, about 30 guppies, 30 blue velvet shrimp and 6 Amano shrimp.

I feed once a day and everything cleans it up in less than 10 minutes. For plant fertilizer I am using CO-Ops Easy Root Tabs and Easy Green as directed and a Fluval light.

When I change water I do about 40 gallons about every 10 days.

Any idea how I can keep the Nitrates lower?

  5. My guppies, shrimp and snails are going to get a late Christmas present, a new heater.

The morning I put my hand in the water and it was very warm so I got my flashlight and got a good look at the thermometer on the other end of the tank and it said that the tank was at 94°.  😬

I have the heater unplugged and opened the lid on one side to start a slow cooldown

I have not had the no-light experience you describe, but PSO always grows like mad in my aquarium. I think I would leave the PSO alone and see if it grows back as it was before. My experience would indicate that the PSO would also do fine if you trimmed it back, so either way.

Glad your algae problem got better.

Thanks HH, It has been about 2 months and where the leaves on the center part of the stems fell off they have not started sprouting again but the very base and tops are show new growth

Trim away all the bare stems on both and replant the tops. They’ll grow back in no time and be much fuller looking.

Thanks Patrick, do I need to leave the base and roots or just pull then and trim the tops and replant just that part?

  7. Water Wisteria & Pogostemon Stellatus Octopus

A couple of months ago I had a bad algae outbreak and ended up turning off the light for about 6 days.  That did clear most of the adage but it took its toll on the Water Wisteria & Pogostemon Stellatus Octopus

I have lost a lot of the lower leaves so do I need to cut them about 1” from the gravel and then trim off the top part and replant them and leave the bottom part to sprout again?

I also have some brown stuff on the leaves, I am guessing that is another form of algae?

That's how my nerite was. Online searches suggested that a dead snail might fall out of it's shell, but mine never did.

Hopefully you've be able to get your ammonia levels back down - any levels are especially hard on invertebrates and likely why it isn't doing well. I generally don't like doing big water changes since I've altered my chemistry a bit from my well water as you have with your coral, but with ammonia at that level I would - and test often to see how you're progressing on that. Be prepared for a possible nitrite spike (which is also stressful for them) as the ammonia gets converted.

Thanks, I did go back and look at my amonia and the decimal was in the wrong place, it was  .15 and now it is back to 0.

I have noticed the snail has not moved in 3 days so I guess it is no longer with me.

    You have 1.5 ppm ammonia?

In any case, your snail might not come back from this. Whenever I had one odd snail behaving like this, they would always pass shortly after. Have you noticed any whitish discharge from the snail's foot?

No the foot looks like it is still up inside and sort of shriveled up.

I forgot I do have 1 lb of crushed Coral in one of the filter chambers.

You can get thining of the shell or slightly different colour to the new growth I think your KH is on the low side for mystery snails I would add some wonder shell or mineral blocks and you can feed them shrimp king snail stixx they have added calcium

Thanks, the newest section of its shell is a pale color not the bright yellow of the rest of it.

I had a nerite snail behave the same way despite water parameters being ok and the other snails ok in the same tank. It was an adult when I purchased it, so no idea how old it was. After 3 days in the same spot I moved it into a plant bowl and started checking for a bad smell, and on day 4 it was definitely gone. I think it was just geriatric though. Notnsure about mystery snails. But nerites are about a year from what I've been able to research.

Is there any physical things to look for inside the shell?

    What's your KH

    KH is 71.6

    GH is 125.3

What are your water parameters do add mineral blocks to help with shell growth as lack of minerals can cause snails to be sluggish and not very active  or it could be old age how long have you had the snail

I have 2 of them, they are about 1.25" dia.

    Here are my water numbers
    PH 7.2
    Ammonia  1.5
    Nitrite   0
    Nitrate  5

I have not added any minerals, guess I will go get some as the other one seems to be doing fine for now/

  13. One of my Mystery Snails does not look right.

In the last week sometimes it is laying on its side and I will upright it,  It has been hiding in its shell for several days and sometime it will have just  a bit of a feeler sticking out and it has not been moving very much.  It has not moved at all in the last 24 hours.

Last week I did suck it up when vacuuming the tank but I have a foam plug in it so I don't suck up any fry  so it was just held against the foam.  Could that have injured it?

I think you’re about to have your 50th fry! 😀

That is probably true, I keep watching them but it is hard to get a good count on the ones with the black dot.

I may have to get a breeding box and just net what fry i can and put them in the box for a while "LOL"

Hmm I turn my filter off for an hour or two each night when I feed my fish and I don’t get bubbles—at least I haven’t for a long time. How old is your tank?

The tank has been going for over 18 years but has only had live plants for a couple of months. I did have a lot of Pogostemon Stellatus Octopus that was at the top and laying over on the surface that was trapping the bubble in that area so I trimmed down and replanted the clippings.

  16. Thanks guys I just watched it.  It must have been from turning my filters down when I feed.

I turn them as slow of a flow as they will do, then I wait a couple of minutes and feed my 16 guppies while I am on the walking on my treadmill.  When I get done I turn the filters back up.
