  1. Help!!! angelfish peeps….so one of my young angels showed symptoms super quick last wk for popeye. I immediately treated with coop meds. He looked terrible and I didn’t think he would make it. But after the wk of meds he’s back to normal as fast as this came on. However looks as though he lost his one eye that was effected 💔😭 will he be ok with his other adolescent angels and thrive or will I need to place him in solo tank to live out the rest of his days alone?

I QT my blackworms in the fridge, in a container with a lid that has a vent for good oxygen exchange. I rinse my blackworms daily with dechlorinated water I keep in the fridge specifically for rinsing and water changes for them.

After 2 weeks QT I have identified and removed anything other than blackworms (decades of getting blackworms I have found exactly 3 leeches and 2 dragonfly larvae... more likely to see planaria but even those have been rare in the cultures I bought).

Just like buying worms for reptiles, the key is to gutload the black worms while they are in the fridge and getting cleaned every day, because we have no idea what they were in before they come to us.

Blanched dark leafy greens, cucmber, squash, carrots, etc are great, nutrient dense worm foods. Change the food out daily, and slice paper thin to encourage eating.

Once QT has been completed, allow them to *slowly* acclimate to tank temperature. Slowly is key, as blackworms are very sensitive to temperature changes. Strain the blackworms once they are acclimated and put them in the tanks.

Conversely, you can keep the culture in the fridge indefinitely, as long as you rinse them and give them fresh water every other day, and fresh food. Just feed as many as your fish will eat.

I like to seed new tanks with black worms a good month before I add fish, so the fish have a live in buffet to graze off of. If they bite a worm in half and at least part gets away, you generally end up with a replacement worm.

    So, win-win

As someone stated above, most if not all the blackworms sold in LFS or online come from one or two farms here in the US. The ads for leech free are misleading, as I have never gotten a batch of blackworms that didn't have a few leeches in with the worms. When I get worms in, I rinse under cold water. If you have city water, you will want to fill a gallon jug or tow and pre-treat it and either leave it someplace cool or put in fridge to cool. I am lucky in that I have well water and can just rinse under tap water. I use a large low flat rubbermaid or sterilte container to keep them in, you don't want the worms in a thick layer or they will suffocate, I keep an inch or so of water in the container, with the worms, and keep in fridge. Once the worms are in the container spread out, you will be able to see the leeches, and can pick them out with tweezers if you like. I only pick out the larger ones, and leave the small ones for my fish to eat along with the worms. I have sprinkled spirulina powder on the water before to gut load the worms, I'm not sure how much it helps or not. You have to rinse the worms daily, just dump them and the water into a fine mesh net and run some cold water over them, and put back into the container with fresh cold water.

    All great info much appreciated

I use one of the tetra 2-10 gallon pre-set heaters, but honestly I’m seriously considering popping one of the aquarium co-op ones in there and seeing how it goes. My hatches are taking 48 hours and I’m wondering if I add a bit more controlled heat if it will help.

Same issue here. Hence why I thought about switching.

  4. Hey hey fishy folks. So I’ve had the brine shrimp Hatcher for some time. But still not getting a good hatch rate. I think it’s my heater as I had a cheap tetra heater in it to seal the top. My question is what is the best heater y’all have found to go with the hatchery??

I'm ORD (out of reactions for the day) and wanted to say thank you for the chuckles (I appreciate blunt honesty, like "said no one ever"), and the sincere HONEST help in here.

@sweetpoison if you managed to keep discus thriving in more than one tank, then my recommendation is....

Breathe. Trust yourself to listen to your tank. I love Cory's video using M7M's for cycling tanks... I love his video explaining the difference between cycled and seasoned even more. You said you want a little easier this time round (and not doing daily water changes) so I offer you a challenge:

    Go slow.

Pay attention to your tank, and what order the different algaes show up.

Pay attention to the things you didn't get to pay attention to when you had discus (also my favorite species I've bred so far, and way more work or energy than I am currently willing/able to invest)

    Play

    Have fun

    Ask questions

Boldly screw up in a fully committed kind of way, just to see what happens next (it's the secret to having fun)

And never stop asking questions, the worst thing we do as a society is shame people into not asking questions for fear of looking foolish. Your questions reinvigorate the hobby with fun. It's supposed to be fun, right?

    Welcome to the forum!

Corys vdo for cycling your tank is definitely best one yet to simplify it. Took myself a while to get is all down last yr as newbie to the hobby. And for months I have seen tbe ORD written and had no idea what it meant 😂😂 thanks for Clarifying. I was to shy to ask lol.

You don’t really have to wonder why I choose that moniker. I also have 2 pics of veiled chameleon faces in that same grouping. A pic of an elephant and a barn swallow. Each purchased from silent auctions over the years at various exotics vet meetings.

That’s completely aside from being a “tomboy” my whole life and knowing far more about cars and engines than fashion.  Walk in high heels? Me?  Nope!  Gonna be a faceplant at some point. I don’t even own a pair. Soccer shoes for playing paintball, jetski boots or high top tennis for doing stupid human tricks on the souped up stand up jetski, yeah I’ve got a couple pairs.

I still have one of the first jetskis we bought, a WaveJammer. It looks somewhat like a duck sitting in the water and one of the reasons I use the name.  My most often used jetski (I use that in the generic sense, not the, “It’s a Kawasaki” sense) has rubber duckies in the paint.
