  1. Nice to meet you, meany.  I just got back into the hobby with a 37 gallon.  Living down in MD, but working in York, PA.  At this point my tank is home to 3 Micky Mouse Swordtails, 6 Schwarz's Cory Cats, and one clown pleco.  Waiting for my order of two koi angels from angelsplus.com to round out my orioles' theme!

  2. I just planted 8 plants from the Co-op, and found a few little surprises as the snails started emerging, but they have been helpful with the tank, especially since I've not gotten a clean up crew yet!  Right now I have 3 swordtails holding down the fort, but next payday promises at least a pleco of some sort or a start of a cory shoal, depending on availability at the LFS.

  3. I love your idea of the themes!  At this point I only have 1 tank, nd it's just getting started at that, but I already refer to it as my camden yards tank (I'm in Baltimore and therefore an O's fan.)  At this point I have 3 Mickey Mouse Swordtails in there, and plan to get some more, posibly some orange and black marble lyretail mollies, plus a school of Emerald Cories and the focal point of a koi angel.  The goal is to have as much orange and black as possible!  Still won't be anywhere near as intricate as yours, though!

  4. I admit I am a bit ashamed of this story, but here it goes.  In college, I was trying to impress a girl as we walked through the pet store, so I pointed at the angelfish tank and said, "they named that one after you!"  She fell for it, I scored a laugh and a kiss, and we ended up leaving the pet store that day with a 3.5 gallon tank, gravel, a plastic plant, and a quarter-sized marble veil angel.  I didn't expect it to live long, but it sat in my dorm room for almost a year, (much longer than the girl stayed around!).  It got to the point where this angel had it's bottom fins dragging on the gravel, and the top out of the water on top.  Eventually, I donated it to a teacher in the biology department that had an empty 225 gallon.

Hopefully, I've learned my lesson, and the angel I'm looking to get now will have plenty of room in his 37 gallon playground.

  5. I'm just starting up my 37 gallon, and I was at my local pet store the other day and saw a "butterfly pleco."  Looking online I found they are also called "flounder plecos."  Apparently they can change colors and such, and don't get very large.  Investigating them more now to find out if one may grace my tank!  I'd love to hear also if anyone has more info on them.

  6. I plan to post some more and better pictures soon, but right now I'm not proud of how the tank looks.  The initial filling was still pretty cloudy after a few days, so I dosed the tank with SeaChem Clarity.  As that cleared, some strange clear jelly appeared on some of the surfaces of my spiderwood decoration.  I think it's the aftereffects of the clarity, but was hoping others may have some insight.  I've put quite a few  plants in (from Aquarium Co-Op of course), and discovered yesterday that I have a resident snail.  the plants now, almost a week later, seem to be in the height of the melt, so I'm hoping they begin the turnaround soon.  I did about a 30% water change today, and the cloudiness is getting clearer, but I am noticing that even with 3 days of soaking with frequent water changes, quite a bit of tannins are still leaching from the spiderwood.  Hoping that will clear soon as well.  I'd love your thoughts on the jelly, and on the set-up in general.

  7. So here's the scoop...

There's a 37 gallon tank in my living room, willing for a filling.

I stopped by my local pet supply store today (The local guy, not a box), and picked up two nice pieces of driftwood.  One is pre-attached to a slate slab so it sits on bottom.  The other is more natural.  Both are soaking in a rubbermaid tote for a few days until I am blessed with my shipment from AQUARIUM CO-OP(3 Amazon Sword, 2 Vallisneria, 3 Micro sword.)   My concern is that the larger of the pieces of driftwood will not stay sunk.  How long does it take to waterlog spiderwood?  Or, how do others make it stay down.  Superglue crossed my mind, but then it can never be moved, removed, or cleaned, right?  I'd love your thoughts!  Thanks!

  8. Thanks everyone.  Just to make sure I'm looking at the right stuff, I found black diamond blasting sand medium grit coal slag for 9.99 for a 50lb bag at tractor supply.  The coal slag part scared me so I wanted to make sure I was looking at the right stuff.  Thanks!

  9. I am in planning stages for  36 gallon bowfront planted angelfish/community tank, and plan to use black sand substrate to make life easy for my little cory friends.  I remember hearing somewhere that black blasting sand from a home improvement store is an acceptable and less expensive option than aquarium sand.  Is this true?  Will using blasting sand hurt my fish?  Any other options that I should look into?  Thanks!

  10. Hello Co-op!

I've had tanks in the past, but it's been a while, and now I'm looking to re-enter the hobby.  I have this plan for a tank celebrate my hometown team, the Baltimore Orioles.  I have a picture of the stadium to hang above the tank (I'm looking at a 39 Gallon Bowfront), and then basing the tank with black sand substrate.  For fish, I'm looking now at 8 cories (likely Emerald or Panda), 6 or 8 tuxedo swords (focusing on their orange and black blend), and the focal point of 2 koi angels (Likely selects from Angels Plus to ensure orange and black blend.)  I'd love to get thoughts and opinions, and promise that once I finally get it up and going I'll document and get some pictures for you all!  Can't wait to get going in the community!
