Good luck on the build out of your fish room! I look forward to following your progress. Do you have certain species in mind that you want to keep?

I'm still a novice in terms of what to keep. Pretty simple tastes. I really enjoy keeping and breeding corydoras and I like white cloud minnows. I'll probably have some killifish and other interesting species that are easy to find and breed.

One thing I'd really like to have eventually is some discus but I'll need a bigger tank and a lot more planning before that's possible.

  2. The garden idea is a good thought as ae will have a very large yard and gardening area. I imagine that's mostly useful in summer.

Our water is super hard (think limestone quarry) so it needed a water softener, but sodium ions are no better than excessive calcium. So I'll need to have it run through that filtration before it's usable. I do worry about wasting water if I scale beyond about 10 tanks.

The good news is I absolutely will have the space based on comparing the room I'll be using to the way Dean had to finagle that furnace and hot water heater...

  3. I think I understand the basic concept, essentially a sloped drain to remove water and then a nozzle to replace. I'm not sure if it's something I should try building when I set up a fish room as it seems complex. Is there a good place to look at the way people structure their systems?

I have an issue with my water in that it will need to be heavily treated before being used. So I'm not sure if a RO/DI system can be used with an auto water change setup.

  4. Hello fellow fish enthusiasts and journalists!

Over the next several months I'll be purchasing a home with a large basement room that will house my entire fishkeeping hobby. A contractor will be adding water access and a drain to the space in May/June and I'll be making a lot of decisions about shelving, number and size of tanks, an air flow system, lighting, and most importantly a big water quality issue (which may require setting up a RO/DI system.

I'm hoping to get feedback and ideas along the way, as well as critiques and answering any questions about why in the heck I made the choices I made. I imagine there will be many orders made to Aquarium Co-Op before all is said and done so you'll see familiar products in as I get under way.

Starting in the next few days I'll post pictures of the space, a little background about how my dad used it before, and share some of my ideas. Come and join the Fishdude on this exciting (and expensive) journey!

  5. So I'm still a novice but I noticed in watching videos of so many fish rooms and stores that many experienced aquarists drill all of their tanks. I understand the basic concept of a sump for single large tanks but I'm wondering about these systems with so many smaller tanks rigged together. Why do they do this and what's the benefit? Where does the water flow to, and how much of it needs to drain? Does this prevent the need for a regular water change in those tanks?

Maybe dumb questions but I'm super curious about this.

  6. Oh this happened to me too! My cories had been laying and devouring their eggs in my original tank and eventually I moved them to a 20L and was determined to try to breed them. The actual egg hatching took a few tries to get the hang of...

So after removing most of the fish from the first aquarium (a 29g) I was trying to figure out what to do with it. And then as I was watching the bottom I saw a tiny little corydora putting around and eating mulm on the gravel. One of the eggs had fallen to the gravel and hatched and survived! I stopped hatching eggs intentionally but every so often I notice new babies who made it by eating off the sponge filter. It's so cool!

  7. Good afternoon everyone! I'm excited to finally join a community and have a place to share stories and ideas and get answers to some pressing questions. Fishkeeping has always fascinated me and as a kid my favorite place to be was in the aquatics room of my local pet store. Even so I never owned a tank until I was in my mid-30s. I'm still fairly new to the hobby as I just set up my first aquarium (29g) a few years ago. Now I've since sold that tank and have about 8 others. I even set up a planted 75g for my daughter's school!

In the next several months I'll be buying a house and have a basement room that will serve as a small fish room. I look forward to sharing that journey and getting ideas from everyone here!
