  1. It seems saltwater and freshwater people have differently wired brains, I've never met a salt and fresh water master keeper, the skill always lean one way or the other.

I could never see myself trying a saltwater tank even though I've done brackish. I've just grown up with freshwater since a child and that's what I know. I wouldn't want to kill those animals trying to figure it all out.

  2. The spawn hatched in 24 hours, this is insane! It usually takes 2-3 days. I have the temps cranked up to 83 degrees.

Here you can see the advantage of the cave, all he has to do is swim an inch up or down to collect and deposit the eggs back into the nest. It'll save his energy since he won't be eating for a few days and will be up all night taking care of his babies.

  3. More babies. Royal blue female x Copper male. I want to suss out the genetics of the royal blue, I should be able to tell if she's heterozygous or not from the babies. There seems to be at least 50 eggs there. Im starting to like these small alien spawns because I'm not a mass producer and don't like culling unless it's necessary

  4. You can go with bbs right from the start. I usually go with green water and infusoria right after they hatch but Ive seen many people go straight to bbs right after theyre done with their yolk sack and they get good results.

  5. I've never had scuds eat the roots, they like the green stuff. I've had scuds with fry's and they don't bother them either  but I've read some can be predatory. I think they only resort to that behavior if there aren't other food sources that they prefer in the tank. If they're kept with fish their population shouldn't affect your plant life. The Goliad Farms Scuds have been trained over generations to eat hornwort and duckweed. They seem to feed the exclusively on that plant because they have so much excess

  6. Unexpected surprise! I fill up an year old 3 gallon water bottle that used to have daphnia in it to raise Scuds outdoors. The crashed culture of daphnia laid eggs and they hatched! This bottle was just tucked away in a corner and not looked after at all. Life is amazing. I added moina that I received today to this so it's a tri culture now, scud daphnia and moina. It will serve as my back up if things go bad

II made a fish stick toy to play with my bettas. It's a clay fish on a chop stick.

My paramecium culture is still going strong. Zero inputs, no lights no heat no feed, just duckweed.

  7. So I have two paths, one that results in more colors(blue, green, steel blue and copper) and another which will give me more coppers to work with. Either is not a problem for my Master Plan. What I want to end up with is a Golden Alien. From the original breeder of the first Gold plakat betta we know the recipe to make gold.

    IMG_20210326_130556.jpg

Gold is basically a copper with white skin instead of black that makes copper look copper. I'm going to skip the copper red and do a copper x metallic green gold alien cross then select for the goldest of the bunch and keep them going. I have slotted 2 years to finish this plan. I fully expect to fail hahaha.

The goal is to get a gold that's a little darker than the gold plakat, like a 24k gold with iridescence. Gold plakat breeders fault iridescence in their lines but I like it, it makes the fish pop

I set up a new 3gal container for my second spawn of the same copper pair

  8. This post might end up long. I'll explain my plans for the alien Bettas. I will be breeding the copper pair and my royal blue female to *try* and fund my main goal.

    Lets talks about genetics.

Copper x Copper will breed true. The spawn will be 100% Copper Alien of varying tones and iridescence.

Copper x Royal Blue can go two ways depending on if the Royal Blue is heterozygous or not. Here are two charts to show what the spawn might end up as.

Or as this. So if I breed the copper to the royal blue and see colors other than steel blue and royal blue I will know I know I have a heterozygous royal blue female and can make more colors. If I don't the heterozygous steel blues from the previous punnet square will produce more coppers.

  9. Here the babies, these are the runty sliders, the bigger ones all look female. This whole brood seems like it's 75% female. Also, they're pretty dang aggressive, I've caught some of them locking jaws

    IMG_20210325_195805.jpg

Edit: I feel like they're a bit undersized but I've never bred Aliens before so I'm not sure how big they should be at this point

  10. Nice set up. I prefer to use a clyindrical tube as a cave for the bubble nest. There's three advantages to it.

    1. It prevent the bubbles from popping. And makes the fish feel safe

    2. When they spawn the female can be out of sight from the male to prevent aggression and it makes removing the female easier

    3. When they finally spawn and you have eggs the male doesn't have to swim all the way to the bottom to gather the eggs. It saves his energy since he won't be eating for a few days

    Good luck with the spawn!

  11. Welp, what should have been a great day is now a terrible one. My fish is DOA, what a waste of a beautiful fish and bloodline

Edit: this is my first DOA in my two years back in the hobby and its a super crappy feeling. I've ordered easily 500$ worth of bettas in that time. I need another male copper and a platinum white for the breeding project I want to do but now I'm kind of rethinking even ordering fish and having them shipped. This sucks

  12. Thanks, I'm starting from the bottom. I don't have any editing experience

The fish I ordered hasn't even shipped yet. The company has strict procedures they do before shipping(fasting etc).  Here's a vid of the fish. He should be here Tuesday, the spawn will be 3 weeks old on the same day

As for the spawn, there seems to be 3 or 4 belly sliders, they're not developing their swim bladder normally. Hopefully theyll get better when they get bigger. I'm not feeding them as much to try to fix the issue and I've turned off the sponge filter. There's some runts too but that's to be expected
