I have removed the heaters from all of my tanks. I keep White Clouds, Neocaridina shrimp, Amano shrimp, Otocinclus, Pygmy Corydoras, Siamese Algae Eaters, Ember Tetras, Bloodfin Tetras, a Yo-yo loach, and a Betta.

Really? At what water temps do you keep the otos? I live in Michigan so…

That guy totally looks like Howie Long. As for the algae eaters how do you feel about snails? Nerites would be good I think.

Actually, without my glasses I get Bobby Flay at least once every other month. Yes I know Nerites are an option, will they clean it pretty well?

  3. I bought 10 cardinal tetras and brought them home to quarantine. 5 died within the first 48 hours. The other 5 have been quarantined for 2 weeks now. They have shown no signs of illness. I am using salt in this quarantine. Should I quarantine them longer or are they probably going to be fine for main tank? Thanks everyone!

Cool 🙂 , One extra step that IMO is worth it is to freeze half cubes first before I add the food and the rest of the water for a little bit of a longer feed out time.

You just put the ice cube in the tank?

My girlfriend asking "did you ask Cory (aka the forum)?" every time I have a fish question.

She seems to think Cory and I are on a first name basis....I don't tell her that we have never met, spoken, communicated in any way haha.

Are the two tanks similar in temperature (within a few degrees)?

If so I'd just float the bag in one for 15 minutes, pour them out into a bucket and then net out the appropriate fish into the appropriate tanks.

Yes they are the same temperature. Thank you, I assumed that would be what to do but thought it better just to ask.

  8. First world problems. The value the Aquarium Co-op team provides from their youtube videos alone is worth an entire years worth of shipping mistakes before I would abandon them. They have taught many of us, free of charge, all that we know about the hobby. That knowledge then has saved me literally hundreds of dollars in potential fish keeping mistakes. Not to mention, this forum and the value it provides. From the way I see it, getting a dead plant and then a refund??? Sounds like you can just watch a few more of their livestreams for free and call it even.

Started quarantining fish earlier on in my fishkeeping career.

Not worried so much about chasing numbers and just let my fish adjust to my tap water parameters.

    Used sponges filters sooner.

I am quarantining right off the bat and using sponge filters as well. Glad I have access to all this information, what would I have done in the past....go to a library????? Haha

As much as I hate to admit it, I’d use aragonite/crushed coral as substrate if I were to redo my tank.  I prefer darker substrate and I adore wood, especially mopani.  Unfortunately, mopani (and other woods) leach tannic acid, which reduces pH.  In my water with fairly low KH, that meant I could be in for pH swings, which is not good for the fish.  Aragonite/crushed coral won’t really affect GH but helps with KH and therefore pH.  The higher your KH, the more stable your pH.  It’s not the look I was going for but if it means happy fish, then I’ll run with it.

Oh, and get lots of plants, more than you think you’ll need.  I thought 5 or 6 of each would be plenty; not so much.  I’d have been happier with the initial look if I’d gone with twice as many plants.

I was wondering about that with the plants. I think I grossly underestimated how many I would need to make the tank feel like an actual ecosystem.

  11. I know this topic has probably been covered multiple times in past posts and also in Aquarium Coop livestreams....

however, I have now had my first tank for a few months and I was wondering: if you could start all over again in the hobby what is one thing you would have done differently?

I would rather walk behind some of you through the mine field than be blown up myself over and over!!!! I get mistakes are part of the learning process but I would love to learn from some of your mistakes as well👍

Hope everyone is having a great thursday and not freezing like I am here in Michigan.
