  1. I have a pair of black rams who are currently raising some eggs but I don’t know if I should feed them or if I should just let them alone until they start hatching the fry because I have always raise the fry myself and I have never done it this this way so I’m not sure if I should feed them or if I should just let them until the fry start swimming and eat the fry food

  2. I recently got into breeding the german blue rams and got a pair of Black rams. They have breed a couple of times but I don’t know how to keep the genes healthy and not excessively line breed them. Do I need to buy just black rams from a different breeder or can I breed the with regular rams and the breed them to black again? How can I do this?

  3. I recently got about 9 neon rainbows and I have breed many fish before but never rainbows so I don’t know at what size they start spawning because I looked info about these and it says they spawn very young. Are these ready or they need to grow fairly larger?A8F3B13B-536B-48F8-B0EB-C5A118678B5B.png.257d7c37d9fdecccc1ed433256f07fe0.png

  4. @Crabby heres the update. After I waited two days I released the female about 2 or 3 pm the second day and the male ran her all day, every time I checked the female was backed on the side not moving so the male wouldn’t come. I left her there and the next day I went in the morning and they were laying eggs so I left her there until around 3 pm or maybe more. image.jpg.78d43d6a49bb807819a32bef05a6f946.jpg

the mote white part are eggs. This breeding was done without checking water, putting additives, heaters just water almond leaves, a lid, plants and a jar. Just put them wait two days, release and wait and nature will do the rest(remember that they were in the bucket with the lid on the bucket always). I tell you this because when I started I was very worried and tried to make everything perfect and did like the internet said and all but it didn’t work at first but then after you understand what you need it doesn’t matter if in a book or in a youtube video says you can’t do it because its probably posible. Hope this helps you on your betta breeding proyect.👍

  5. I got a batch from one of my young Black rams pair. They are free swimming now and this is my first black ram spawn  since I have only breed the other regular types. Some of them look like the have a little black line that makes them appear darker than other fry that look clear. I think the darker ones are black rams and the others gold. I this correct?E036F199-89C1-42BA-ADA2-D5BF3A7ED14A.jpeg.9c3d48e3f727846393e23ed6655e8dd9.jpeg

  6. @Crabby Since you had been having a little bit of trouble I thought it would be a good idea to show you how exactly I do it. Today I went to buy a new male betta since I had some females that my uncle gave me but no males. AF9D0815-1BD6-4537-8CC4-B00581118C92.jpeg.c09642467770e5520342741cd17f1066.jpeg

then since he is new I feed hime some fish flakes and put him in a bucket outside with water from one of my guppy ponds. I don’t have enough guppy grass because Im using it in my shrimp tanks and I don’t have that many so I didn’t put anything else but two almond leaves for now. I will add water lettuce today or tomorrow . After I selected my female and put her in a jar.A1DB1A7C-CB80-4ED0-8E3D-7198387DFA6B.jpeg.fe35e96a022f4bcdd2d5de8a3afbd150.jpeg

as you can see the yellow belly full of eggs and thats what you wana see on a female betta before breeding. She should be fat and with a little dot popping out a little bit under her belly. Next I place a small plastic container lid that floats and lets me see through to see when they have laid eggs. 670CBB35-02E3-423A-8D03-4C002F2EF945.jpeg.b381b53f57071abcb6ea84a9cc3c11b1.jpegafter this I covered the bucket with a plastic lid and an hour and about 15 minutes the male was already making a nest. 3C2312BD-3170-4DC7-AD96-240A9B58B733.jpeg.bcfc777f87449daf9dccac4704a54c7d.jpegThis is a good sing. Now I leave the bucket covered for about two days and if the male needs more time to do a nest i’ll give him three days. After this time passes I release the female and if she doesn’t lay in 24 hours and the male is beating her I remove her if there is not that much aggression and breeding behavior I’ll give them more time. After this its all down the hill.

  7. Can I feed newly free swimming Gbr fry live baby brine? I have always feed paramecium first, micro worms and the baby brine shrimp because they are so small at the beginning. But I have seen some people recently who feed brine right away but I don’t know if they are successful by feeding brine right away.

Ahaha I see where the difficulty would be if he keeps getting that black dot back! 😂

Female is definitely a female. The male looks a lot like a male in that image, but if you’re not sure then my personal favourite way to tell is using the ventral fins. It’s not the same for all apistos, but certainly for nijsseni, panduro and similar looking types, the males will have ventral fins that are clear at the top and yellow at the bottom, while a female will have thicker ventrals that have black at the top and yellow at the bottom. You can use this to tell their sex from only a couple months old.

If you’d like, I think I still have a breeding log or something like that that documented my spawn and the conditions. Got most of it in the old noggin but if you wanna have a look at that I’d be happy to go find it and post it as an article or something.

edit: apparently this forum doesn’t use articles. A bit of a shame. They’re a pretty useful feature for finding undiluted information. I guess I would post it as an informational topic then 🤷‍♂️

like a day after I got them the male had the black and yellow on the ventrals. But I bought it as a pair so Im going to give it time before I assume its a male😂E7926011-3A55-4E93-8743-6BFA6A907615.jpeg.61717e644c4e64ecbc1aeedd2dfac8c7.jpeg7C4A2946-E79E-4F37-8E26-375A38ADE48D.png.6c06003b24797fb8c99cca405a7ed729.png

Oh, panduro are beautiful. I think there’s actually quite a bit of similarity between panduro, nijsseni and baenschi (inka 50), so if you want I could confirm for you whether it’s a male or not. Apistos can be a bit difficult with their colour changing tendencies. But it’s all worth it in the end.

I’ve only bred mine in their community tank (planted and scaped, with substrate), and raised the fry in there too. I think the planted tank is actually the best way to do it, and it looks so much better as well. I think if you were looking to actually make some money off breeding apistos, you’d want to seperate the fry from the parents maybe a couple weeks in? The mum takes very good care of the fry, but to grow them fast I would seperate them from the parents and raise them in bare bottom tanks. Indian almond leaves are key for apistos too; mine bred at 5.5 pH with very soft water and low TDS, so lots of IAL and driftwood will create the perfect environment.

    Good luck!

yeah thanks and I’ll follow your tips to see if they breed.A015348B-D996-48FA-A4F6-83D7B8F04F9E.png.56fe74837247d92b963756e5f9c88d07.pngthat one should be the male (this is an emergency tank that I had to set up for some angels and it’s literally on the floor outside in the storage shed so thats why its so dirty and all) 42AB5D3D-8056-4CD3-882D-0D793D4933AF.png.ce261d6b1cdf4acdbafdff391e3b2784.pngand this one should be a female what do you think? its been real difficult cause today he is like that and tomorrow he has a black dot and female colors🤷‍♂️😂

Thank you so much for your advice mate. I really appreciate your time.
Breeding fish is one of my favourite parts of the hobby, and bettas seem to have such a fascinating breeding process that I’m certainly going to keep trying until I get a successful spawn, at least. I actually started off breeding apistos, and they’re super cool in their own way, especially with their courtship and parenting. I hate to have favourites… but my apistogramma nijsseni pair are totally my favourite fish. What types of apistos did/do you keep and breed?

I regret not trying to breed immediately when I saw her dropping eggs. I did try maybe 12 hours later, but by then she was really exhausted and freaked out, and my male didn’t have time to build a bubble nest in the breeding tank. I think my takeaway from that experience is that I should simply introduce the fish to each other with a divider and it should be inside the breeding tank so that as soon as they’re ready to go, I am too. Your advice has been really helpful regarding this spawn attempt, and I reckon with your tips in mind I should be able to get a successful spawn next time.

    Cheers!

Yeah, I really cant have just a tank with fish, I need to be doing something with it. I started breeding bettas actually so its kind of the opposite. I have been looking to purchase a pair of apistos online because here they haven’t come for a while in the fishstore and when they do some one beats me and gets them before I get them. But I recently bought a pair of apistogramma panduro but the one I think is the male is way smaller and younguer then the female so I got to grow him up before I try breeding them and to confirm that he is a male cause after I put him in the tank I thought it was a female because of the colors... but now he seems like a male so hopefully he is acclimating and is a male after all. But yeah after bettas I wanted to start to sell fish as a hobby to keep growing and being able to keep investing in this so now I breed guppies, shrimp, angels, rams and hopefully some apistos in the near future. Have you breed apistos in bare bottom tanks?

Yes, put the divider in the same tank so you just gotta pull it out and let them do their thing.

No problem, any time man if you need a tip or a doubt that I might know let me knowits fun to talk with others who are also into fish since not a lot of people here truly understands my obsesion.

  11. Im currently breeding tiger ender guppies, metal lace guppies, red cherry shrimp, blue jade shrimp, dark knight rams, albino kribensis. Starting to breed hellboy bettas and trying to breed koi angels, wild peruvian spotted angels and raising apistogramma panduro and albino bristlenose plecos to breed them in the future.

The tank in the first image looks very similar to mine. Not sure if you’re aware but IAL is just an acronym for Indian almond leaf. I agree, they’re amazing for breeding all sorts of fish and shrimp!

If you don’t think it’ll work because she was dropping eggs, I’ll pull her now. Thanks for saying that, I wasn’t sure whether it would affect the spawning. I’ll go get some more mosquito larvae to re-condition her. Can I leave the male in the breeding tank?

I think you should pull her and give time to recondition. When the female drops the eggs and they don’t breed that day or the other (pushing) it wont work probably. That actually happened to me with the pair that was in the tank but I saw when she started dropping the eggs and released her right away and I don’t remember the exact time but like in less than an hour they were breeding.

No, I didn’t know IAL was for indian almond leaves my bad 😂

I am going to start to breed bettas again to. As I kept growing in the hobby I wanted to breed other stuff and started concentrating in rams, apistos, angels ect.

It might be frustrating but if you keep trying I think you will get a hang of it sooner than later.

If you have any other problem or doubt let me know.

I had them separated for 3 or 4 days before the female started dropping eggs, then I tried spawning them and the female was really not into it, so I took her out and left him in the tank. That was earlier this week. Then I reintroduced her to him for a day before trying this attempt. I tried the bottle method but she hated it, totally got freaked out because he wouldn’t leave her alone, so I changed it to a divider and they both acted much better (she was really into him, and he was still into her but finally started making his bubble nest.

He already had a good nest when I released her, but he’s insisted on making a fricking bubble mansion now, although I don’t think he realises it doesn’t matter if he keeps being weird and won’t let the female get close.

I’ve got them breeding in a 5 gallon tank filled halfway up with IAL + aquarium-salt water as recommended earlier in the thread. Couple of IAL, big bunch of Java moss behind one leaf so she can fully hide from him, a sponge filter turned off, and a little bit of duckweed. The duckweed wasn’t intentional of course… it’s duckweed.

if the female was dropping eggs it will probably won’t work. You’ll have to wait a week minimum and feed her rich foods. In the setup I would do the same but without the salt or additives but I don’t know your water so if you think it is a must do it and try to put some almond leaves as its beneficial for the fish. I actually try to always have almond leaves with my bettas because of the minerals it releases into the water. You’ll probably going to have many times that it doesn’t happen but that doesn’t mean the set up is bad, I had like 4 or 5 pairs of betta before I got a hang on breeding them.

The picture was in 2018 or 2017 when I was starting to breed fish but its just to show that it doesn’t need to be to fancy or complicated.64521523-64B6-4226-B3DD-40FEF2130BA7.jpeg.b021d2c43dea7887edee934c491be85d.jpegDAB3209C-8030-47CA-8231-650A33323162.png.a4494fa70af6c3da3477315de9bddd65.png

He’s certainly flaring for her, he seems pretty interested, but then he has these weird moments where he just gives up on his attempts to impress her and chases her off. Is there anything I can do to have a better chance of them spawning at this point?

how much time did u leave them separated and in what are u breeding them on? I recomend putting the female in a jar or bottle so they are always in sight, breed them in a bucket or top with a lot of floating plants like guppy grass, and I leave the female from 2-3 days. 2 if the male does the nest quick but if he takes longer i’ll leave them three days completely covered before letting the female out and the i cover it up again until they spawn

  15. On 7/25/2021 at 5:56 AM, Crabby said:

@Adrian Rodriguezif they haven’t spawned yet after 10 hours but they don’t look like they’re being very aggressive (male is chasing the female a little but he just darts after her then leaves her alone) I should be fine to leave them together, right?

Also is there anything I can do to stop the male from chasing the female every time she checks out the bubble nest? Cuz it’s meant to be good when she does that, but every time he chases her away. He’s very possessive of it. And I’m almost positive they haven’t spawned yet. He just wants to keep making it bigger and bigger, for seemingly no purpose.

The male is going to chase the female and thats why she needs a lot of cover but but after some time the male should start to want to breed and allow her to be close and might even swim towards her and flare up to try get the females attention but if after a day they are still darting all around you should remove the female so she doesn’t get beat up

  16. So I got a batch from a young pair that laid their first batch and I wanted to know the hatchrates of ram breeders to see if I can improve in hatching the eggs. At first there were 111 but now with the ones with fungus that I removed there are 98 in the first 32 hours.

  17. I breed bettas and I never test the water or tested for temperature because unless your parameters are way off, you’ll be fine. I take a pair put them in a bucket and put the female in a jar and the male out, put a plants and cover the whole thing so no light or little light enters and after two days release them. obviously you gota feed them really well and get the female nice and plump.

That’s a good question. I used to store brine shrimp eggs that I knew I wouldn’t get to for a while in the freezer actually. I never had a problem storing them like that. I started doing that after hearing others do it that way. Eggs I would use more quickly I kept in the fridge.

do you guys keep the eggs on the bag or in the can?

  19. I received this tams recently and noticed one has a white spot on the top. I am worried its fungus and I have never dealt with fungus so I don’t know if it is or if its not. Could some tell me if it’s fungus and if I should treat him or just leave it alone?
