  1. Josh, sorry this is happening.

First advice - stop putting easy green in. If you can respond to the questions on your stocking (i see a few angels, what else is in there to help gauge bioload), your water parameters (especially nitrate), how long your light is on a day (is it on a timer also?), the folks here can help you get your tank back into balance and eliminate the green water.

  2. Welcome Olivia! Female bettas are the best and I also had one who could not “play well with others” LOL. We still refer to her as “that murderous betta” even though we did everything right as I am sure you did.

  3. Can someone help me ID this young fish? It was sold to me in a group with harlequin rasboras (six total all the same size) and in the bag it looked a little different but they told me it was for sure a harlequin rasbora.

A month later and the others have grown much faster and this lil guy doesn’t really swim with them much. I don’t see him being bullied but if it isn’t a rasbora what is it?

The multi-level idea is to have covered areas where the cories can feel secure -

I have done this and my corys use all three of the levels. When I discovered fry, i swapped the rocks for the cholla wood pieces seen here and the babies used it for refuge. I have seen an adult inside one of them and hope it can become a second breeding location if they hate the coconut hut.

I’m going to be visiting Houston in a few weeks. Which stores do you recommend, Nancy K? Thanks in advance!

B and B Fish and Pets, That Aquarium Place, and Fish Gallery. Those are the ones I know and love but I haven’t been to Fish Gallery in a few years because the others are way closer to me. Enjoy your trip to H-town 🙂

You are SO lucky.  Ours would be in Houston, about 2 hours away, I think

Are you North or West of greater Houston? I live 10 minutes from two fab LFS I frequent and we could coordinate if you want something specific. Their stock is always super healthy and rotates often. I have seen a gold nugget pleco, arowanas (sp?), lots of varieties of tetra and cichlids, super red bristle nose, and lots of shrimp varieties

  7. Welcome to the forum and from your post I can tell you are educating yourself and doing all the right things. That’s great and best of luck to you. The only things I can add that may be helpful are water changes are your Best friend right now and I would check your parameters out of the tap water/source water too to better understand what your tank is doing and the parameters of the water going in. 10 gallons with good filtration and careful water keeping like you are doing is still a lot to ask to get and remain stable with a pleco (aka poop machines) but i understand from your post upgrade plans are near term. When you do switch over take your existing substrate with you even if in a filter media sock to help seed the new tank’s beneficial bacteria. Lastly I would be double dosing PRIME until fixed/settled. Good luck!

  8. Hi Patricia - I want to help but don’t understand if you are having trouble keeping your water temperature stable because of the ambient temperature or because of the heater. Do you need to cool the tank and what is your water temp doing?

  9. About a week ago I found/saw two more baby corys. But they were and are much smaller than my first two babies I originally posted about. Is there any way to know if they were part of the same spawn? I finally got a pic of them side by side today.

That is astonishing to me. I remember crying for people and their fish as that was happening. This is the first I've heard of the situation creating life instead of killing. Beautiful. Love it.

Thank you. It was a really rough time and we were so fortunate. I was sure after day 3 or so when I finally unwrapped the tank it would be a total loss but everyone made it including the 3 nerite snails and the two surviving harlequins. The water temp was 58 which I thought should have surely killed the rasboras. I have named them Frosty and Freeze hehe and I love nothing more than watching them grow and get bolder in their free swimming.

I can tell this is an awesome story, but I can't quite tell what it is! Is getting cold what triggered the spawning? So the babies are the silver lining of the TX freeze?

Yes with the heater in the tank powerless and no heat in the house the water got very cold and I think that was what spawned them. I didn't know I had fry or babies until last week.

Might be easier just running two separate sponge filters in the aquarium.  One coarse, one fine.  You can always get inventive on your own, with a personalized design too; by fusing various sponge material together onto one sponge filter housing.  Lots of possibilities.  😊

Almost a year later and wow thank you for this!!!! I read it and realized I can take my coop sponge filter spare and remove the sponge and replace it with filter pad and rubber bands to run it and do some water polish  without needing to set the HOB back on it. How exciting!!!

  13. That is great to hear! I honestly don’t know what they were eating between hatching and finishing their egg sacs and when I spotted them already with adult coloring. That tank has a lot of mulm in the java fern jungle so maybe that? I hope they are out of the woods and I can rear them to adulthood.
