@MDBuckeye I appreciate your honesty. If I were in your shoes, I’d immediately acquire either 1 Bolivian Ram like @nabokovfan87 suggested or 1 Angelfish. Either way, they’ll snipe all the fry in no time, then you’ll just have adults for their lifetime. I’ve resorted to this and it works 100% of the time. I have a 15 months old so I totally relate to not being able to get to the local club. If you do have the time, you can shoot them an email and see if they have a better suggestion. Good luck dude, hope it works out for you.

I have a 75g and as I'm reading this thread I'm beginning to despair because while I don't want guppies my list is Platys, Rosy barbs, 1 apisto cockatodia and 1 Bolivian Ram. You're post has given me renewed hope that I have the right mix.

I like that light bulb idea I haven't tried that. I personally use a Top Fin Betta 20 watt heater with thermostat, I believe petsmart carries them. I have escaped the chore of unplugging it every time by filling a container with the tap water for the next batch, giving the heater a quick rinse, then it goes right into the new tap water while I separate and harvest.

This is a great idea. I used it this morning. Worked great. I was so tired of the plug/unplug.

Not sure how the fry would do with the Maracyn dosage. I think that cleaning off cyan by hand is usually best unless it's unbearable. If your tank is elevated enough, you can run a siphon hose down to a bucket. Scrape either with the end of the hose, or with another tool and suck the cyano away. We've worked through this before in three ways: (1) scrape, suck, and water change (2) Black-out the tank (cyano needs light) (3) Erythromycin treatment.

Thank you. The hose description is what I've been doing and it's not too bad but it doesn't take long before it can get out of control, which is why I wanted to hit it with Maracyn. I wonder if you can truly get rid of it without the meds.

  4. I have 5 baby jewel cichlids in a breeder box. They are doing really well. I feed them bbs twice a day. They are 14 days old. I have Cyanobacteria in this same tank. I've been doing small water changes and cleaning up as much of it out of the tank as possible but I'd like to medicate the tank with Maracyn without moving the fry. I'm just not sure if it would hurt the fry. Before I do this though I'd like opinions on if it's a bad idea.

  5. Three days ago baby Hemichromis exsul, Jewel Cichlid appeared! This is a 75g community tank. The parents are very protective. So far no bloodshed but only because isn't overstocked and most of the other fish are fast. The first day I put in some of the co-ops fry food I had and then I just started grinding up flake. Normally I would have had bbs for them but I had hatchery problems. I got that straightened out and fed baby brine shrimp this morning. Can anyone tell me if they are old enough to eat bbs? They are managing to eat something or they wouldn't have made it the last 3 days.

Ever since I saw HC Aqua post up the best way to feed baby brine shrimp I had to follow suit!  This allows me to feed all the tanks and fry trays super quick.  What is your favorite way to feed baby brine shrimp to your tanks?

I bought a couple of these and tried it today. Worked better than anything I've worked up so far. Great tip.

Just did a little research, and it seems that brown diatom algae is a precursor to green algae. So it would seem that it's part of your tank's cycling. Also, from what I read, the only reason a water change would encourage more brown algae is if your water is high in silicate. In fact, brown algae LOVES nitrate. So by not changing some of the water out, you are just encouraging more food for the diatoms, if that makes sense. I'd do a 25% water change and wait a bit on the fish, until the tank is growing something besides diatom algae. I hope that helps. 🙂

It helps a lot. Thank you. I'll do as you suggest.

I'd test and see where your nitrates are and make a decision about a water change from there.

The Nitrates are about 80 which I know is high for fish. I could do a water change but is that going to make the brown algae worse? I can wait on the fish if I thought that doing so would make more algae less apt to show up.

  9. I have a 10g tank I set up about a month ago. I have an amazon sword, wisteria, val and some kind of short grass looking plant. I fertilized the tank heavily when I put it together. The plants are doing really well except it has brown algae I think is caused by diatoms. I have not done any water changes, just topped it off. There are no fish. I'd like to do a water change to get the nitrates lower but if I do I feel like I'm just introducing more diatoms and the algae will get worse. The light is a stingray. Any suggestions?

If you have the Ziss BBS hatchery it comes with a pipette. It works great. I run the hatched BBS trough a sieve pour them into a cup and feed the tanks using the pipette. Left over BBS go back in the now clean hatchery for a second feeding.

So you clean the hatchery, put new water in and add in the left overs. Do you also add in more eggs?

I saw this thread as I was thinking about the easy planters.  I just purchased 2 and they're awesome.  I hope Cory can respond but what would be the chances of these coming in different colors such as greyish tone or black.  I know it's a new product and you have to see how it sells.  But what would it take to get you to consider something like that?

I like mine very much but I would like black and a darker brown.

So my problem is a little different.  I had a pretty serious ammonia spike a while back, now my crypts completely melter.  I cleaned up the dead/dying leaves.  I assume the Amonia is the culprit, and the will come back, but.....

I'm not sure what was going on with mine but they stopped melting. I think, I over dosed with easy carbon. Things stabilized and the melting stopped.

Speaking with K of KGTropicals. He says he stores his containers of unhatched bbs eggs in the fridge and they stay viable for months.

@cory bought a refrigeration unit for the warehouse just to keep his new bbs eggs he's selling fresh. Hope it works because I accidentally just but 2 cans of eggs. It will take me some time to run out.
