  1. Thanks! I have a fridge full of different foods. Flakes, live black worms, frozen brine shrimp, pellets, bug bites... But, haven't tried any of the Hikari line yet. Thanks for the advice! It's going on the list 🙂

  2. Happy update!! 24 hrs after my initial post all three are perfectly fine! Thank you for your help!!

    Transferred to new tank;

    Raised heat to 80;

    Added salt;

Turned the lights off and covered the tank with a towel.

Took a peek tonight to find all of them swimming around! Fed them each a couple of blood worms and all seems right in the world tonight. It really is a great feeling to see them doing well.

Their tail fins seem a little tore up now, so I figured I'd try erythromycin next.

Again, thanks to everyone who commented!

As a side note, If you use a pH buffer, please be careful.  Huge pH swings will kill fish instantly.

Thank you! I don't use buffers. All of my fish are adapting to the pH and I'm trying to bring it down in natural ways.

  4. Found that three of the six I picked up had clamped fins. Transferred them all to another H tank - salted and cycled. Have it dark and covered with a towel. (I did just take a peek and see that two appear to have perked up!!) May be wishful thinking that this will work... Each in their own breeder box for security.

The med trio wont do much.

To correct the clamp fins you need to figure out the problem and fix it. I'll give you an example of a betta I had with clamped fins (keep in mind this was YEARS ago and I have learned from my mistakes)

-I had a betta in a bowl with no heater the betta develped clamped fins. The problem: The water parameters and the tempeture of the water. I fixed the problem and he was all fine.

I am thinking its the amonia and ph causing this. Do a waterchange an then lower the ph. To lower ph you can introduce tannins or get:

-Seachem Betta Basics This will buffer the ph to 7.0.

    -Aquarium Salt will also help.

Thank you! Started the med trio this morning so I'm not apt to change the water. The low ammonia - which is nearly 0 - is considered to be in the "safe" parameters. The tank is cycled - but this little bump did come up yesterday. I should have changed water before I did meds. Dangit!

I will head out to see if I can grab the buffer. I do have a couple of cattapa leaves in the tank. I think I read one of this per 10gal...

  6. I know I'm full of questions today! But, I picked up this Betta from a local breeder Saturday. She's been playing and seemed to be doing well, but last night I noticed clamped fins. My plan was always to wait until Monday morning to start meds so I could feed her and observe. Guess I waited too long.

Amonia 0-.25 (barely showing a green color in master kit)

    Nitrites 0

    Nitrates somewhere between 20

    pH 8.2

I am feeling like it's the harder water and pH causing the issue, which there is nothing I can do about with immediacy. The water in my area is much harder than the breeder's, but I didn't realize this until after already bringing her home that this could be an issue.

I'm heart broken 😢 Poor thing.

Started med trio first thing this morning.

Have you ever had a fish that's recovered from clamped fins before? She has no other signs of distress.

  7. I have a 75 long with a nice Eheim heater. I have the thermometer set up on the complete opposite side of the tank to monitor the temp.  This is a newer tank - about 5 weeks now. The temp has maintained at what I've set the heater to. However, I have seen recommendations that two heaters for a tank of this size is ideal. Thoughts on that?

Seems to be working fine as is, but would it increase the life span of the heated??

Plant safe in our experience. Tested more times than can be counted in our shop tanks.

Thank you so much! I'm feeling great about it!

Have you tried frozen foods? I had not used them and just started this year. The fish LOVE THEM. I started with San Francisco Bay Brand Freshwater Frenzy and Baby Brine. I have added mini-bloodworms, brine (full size) and Freshwater-Multipack to the rotation.

For everything except the Baby Brine, I drop the cube in about a 1/2 cup of water until the cube sinks then drop it in the tank. I just drop in the baby brine.

The smaller fish love the smaller foods while the bigger fish like the bloodworm sized foods.

I like this mix as it covers the bases of carnivore and omnivore equally well as bottom feeders.

I also feed a combination of flake, algae pellets and Vibrabites.

It's a little pricy, but most if not all of my fish are what I call specimen quality photogenic a.k.a. they are beautiful with amazing fully developed color.

Pick one food, try it out for a while to see how it goes and repeat until you find something your tank likes.

    Have fun with your fish!

Hello, yes! I have frozen brine shrimp. I haven’t tried frozen bloodworms yet, but they’re on my list! I use Bug Bites, flakes, shrimp pellets, wafers... all kinds of stuff, lol. They’re quite spoiled when it comes to variety!! Just need to make sure those loaches and tetras get some too 🙂 Thank you!!

I understand, I separated my loach and corydoras after a while concerned it was not getting enough though I did notice it on the glass after I turned out the lights. One thing is you can put food in a spot that is visible to you and watch (maybe from a distance) to see if they land on it.

    Look at that cutie!

How long have you had the loaches? If you have had them for a while and they are still alive you are prob okay. I have fed my hillstream hikari sinking algae tablets. I'm pretty sure it has eaten my repashi  community blend and I am fairly positive it eats baby brine shrimp. When ever I feed BBS it comes out and goes crazy. If you can I would say live baby brine shrimp is a good one for that tank, every one would go bananas for it (and it is fun to watch the bettas hunt them). Break up an algae wafer and put pieces in a few different parts of the tank so the loach can find a piece away from the cory cats if you are concerned about them not getting enough.

One thing  to think is maybe feed when they are most active so they are likely to get food.

This is awesome advice. Thank you! Only had the loaches a few weeks.

  12. Hello,

75 gal community tank with: Danios and 15 Bettas at top/middle, neon tetras in the middle/bottom, panda corydoras at the bottom, hillstream loaches and a snail.

Any recommendations for mealtime? I have a variety of foods - a fridge full of different kinds, including Rapashy Community. (The only thing none of them seem to want to try yet is the Rapashy.)

I have never seen the loaches eat and I know they need more than just the tank algae. How do I know they’re getting enough? And the poor little tetras that are so tiny and slow! 😩

What are your tips for feeding a community tank?

    Any kind of ditherfish

    -Danios (As you mentetion)

    -Harlequin Rasboras (As you mentetion)

-Rummy Nose Tetra and litterley any other kind of tetra

    -Celestrial Pearl Danios

I don't know if I would do mollys as I have heard they can be abit aggressive

Ok ok! I broke down and picked up 7 Danios - long fin leopards to be exact. They are beautiful and so much fun to watch. I’ve never thought they were very pretty, but they’ll be perfect with the Bettas.

  14. Hi Irene,

Do you have any advice or experience with different types of Hillstream loaches hanging together? I have one spotted right now and want to add two more to my 75 gal tank, but I’m really interested in reticulated. I have read that patterns matter to fish?? but haven’t been able to find info on Hillstream loaches. Thoughts?

    Thank you 😊

  15. I appreciate all of the feedback and advice! I didn’t go out and buy any yesterday afterall. I didn’t have the courage. Getting there though ... lol.

Nobody has really said anything about housing with a betta sorority. I may not have posed the topic correctly and will try again.

Regarding being fin nippers, some of my half moon girls do have longer flowing fins like males, so fin nipping is a concern for me.

  16. My daughter wants Dalmatian mollies so so badly. I’ve been considering it for about a month.

I am finding mixed reviews on aggression with these fish. We have a beta sorority, a school of neon tetras, 6 panda Corydoras, and one Hillstream loach (for now). My daughter wants Dalmatian Mollies. I’m thinking of adding 3 females. Thoughts??
