  1. So I have a 20 gal tank with a few fish in it and plenty of plants , one of my platys kind of just floats around the top of the tank , manages to swim to the bottom but mostly at the top of the water it looks like it is not using its tail . Been like this for two or three months now this fish is usually stiff as a board but  no visible signs of infection or bloating . Does like to eat the co ops fry food tho . Any thoughts ?

  3. Update : havent had the chance to change water because we are moving but  parameters are holding , the mini green killing machine took at least 5 days to show any improvement , I cut the lighting hours to 4 hours a day and the water is crystal clear , I have to do maintenance but that will happen when we move the tank. We also now have three known fry from out yellow and orange/ reddish platys

Turned off the uv but still using the pier head for circulation for now

@Marshall You mentioned you tried turning the lights off, did you also darken the tank with a blanket, or dark bags? If not then you might want to try this but since you mentioned you used to dose fertilizer I surmise you also have plants in the tank, at that point I would not go past 48 hours with the total blackout. The UV sterilizers are usually safe for your fish as long as the unit isn't damaged, the principle is that they use a pump that directs water past a UV bulb located in a crystal glass cylinder inside the sterilizers body.

They do work, they kill algae and bacteria in the water streaming past the bulb and will clear up your water but they are usually fairly expensive, and the bulbs tend to burn out after several weeks, or months and will need replacement often, they take up space in the tank, and if you are dosing liquid iron the UV light messes with its chelation and renders it unusable to plants. They are more of a short term temporary solution than a permanent fixture. I own one, and just like my Marineland Magnum Clear diatom filter I only use it when needed.

Here a few links dealing with the subject:

    https://fishlab.com/green-aquarium-water/

The uv light was a suggestion from the LFS , it's not something I would plan for long term use , tanks getting overhauled once we move just wanted to get any sort of idea what's going on

  6. Ok so my 10 gallon tank is producing so much green water I can't keep up with it , within two days of doing major water changes you can't even see into the tank , I tried a hob filter that diddnt work I tried turning the light off , it got worse , I haven't dosed ferts in a month , will a uv filter help ? And will it be safe for my fish ? Other ideas are welcome , on a good note we had some platy fry show up in the tank out of no where

Just in case you didn't know, you can power the co-op usb air pump off of one of those USB battery packs for quite some time.  some of the bigger packs can in theory (if accurately rated) run one for days.

    (Disclaimer: I haven't tried this)

If you want something pill-like you could try to fill up one of those old-style contact lens cleaners with hydrogen peroxide and drop that in the tank.  It has a platinum catalyst that converts the h2o2 to oxygen and water so it would give you pure oxygen bubbles for some amount of time.  I've also heard of people adding hydrogen peroxide to tanks during an emergency (I know you can add something like 1-3 ml/gallon safely) though I don't know under what circumstances that's actually warranted or how you diagnose a hypoxic fish though.

I ran the nano pump off a $7 WalMart cashier area rip off back up phone battery bank the size of a credit card . For three days . Just saying . I also charge that thing at work to get the maximum output lol .

  8. Is there a video on how to use vita chem ? I purchased it to add to my fish food but it looks like it just leeches out once I put the food in ? Is there a recommended food for this & or detailed instructions other then " apply directly to the forehead " ? Lol . Also ryobi be trippin

Algae on the glass lid is common. Especially with a sponge filter. I have to clean the algae off my lid at least once a month. When I notice the algae I turn off the filters, pull the lids and scrap them into my changed tank water with my algae scrubber. It’s one more thing to do, but the only way to slow it down would be to lower the water level. I hate the look of a water line at the top of the tank. I would rather clean the algae than see the water line.

On the yellowing leaves, this graphics should help.

Screen shoted that thanks , yes I have the high water line as well . I will have to take a better look at the plants , this really helps

  10. Ok , bought a glass lid at lfs , and a light off co op website among a few other things , having issues with algae growing almost faster then I can clean it on the glass lid . Any thoughts ? I have two snails and they keep the tank clean but they don't get the lid so wasn't sure if any one else has this issue , 10 gal tank , planted , two snails and two tetras in it , only using a sponge filter with air stone ,  ordering test strips today but water doesn't smell bad . Just a little earthy ,  also having some plant yellowing and die off , will follow up with water parameters when I get the strips

  11. I have crushed Coral in the tank some times it sifts through it , I also feed it algae wafers with it seems to like seeing it polished my tank in three days of algae . I also go heavy on dry blood worms and xtreme flakes for the fish so there's plenty of food  or so I thought , I will keep an eye on it and try the wonder shell

  12. In drilling a round object it might be easier to wrap the coconut in a towel, put it in a bench vice with the area your drilling exposed and bore out the whole first. , Then cut the coconut in half  , also wood turning  chisels would be a good option because you can get them in a curved shape to scrape the coconut meat out

  13. IMG_20210120_084744.jpg.8936d0fda5b27c91d687873d072a9a08.jpgit all started a year ago my daughter 2years old wanted a tank , now we are here a year later , today we added two snails to the community and a grogu ( baby yoda ) to watch over them , all plants from the co op . Yes I know I need to clean it up but left it dirty so the snails can forage while getting used to the tank , she loves her fishys and keeps calling the shrimp lobsters and it's hilarious

I really like using lava rock in my tanks. I'm not sure where you would get some though, unless you live near a volcanic area like I do.

I agree lava rock is nice and if you have a boring drill and the rock is big enough you can carve out nice channels that look similar to lava tubes I diddnt do that in this tank but there's lava rock in it and it holds a lot of bacteria because it's so porus and my shrimp love that it catches all the food that passes by it
