So I have a 20 gal tank with a few fish in it and plenty of plants , one of my platys kind of just floats around the top of the tank , manages to swim to the bottom but mostly at the top of the water it looks like it is not using its tail . Been like this for two or three months now this fish is usually stiff as a board but no visible signs of infection or bloating . Does like to eat the co ops fry food tho . Any thoughts ?

Are uv lights safe in my aquarium
Marshall replied to Marshall's topic in Plants, Algae, and Fertilizers
Update : havent had the chance to change water because we are moving but parameters are holding , the mini green killing machine took at least 5 days to show any improvement , I cut the lighting hours to 4 hours a day and the water is crystal clear , I have to do maintenance but that will happen when we move the tank. We also now have three known fry from out yellow and orange/ reddish platys Turned off the uv but still using the pier head for circulation for now -

I have the mini green killing machine on order the 3w one . Gonna try it . When it clears up I'll remove it and change the game plan . Should be here tomorrow . I'll follow up in a day or so that k you all for the info . I'm not the best fish keeper but I am trying to learn because it's my daughter's tank and she love her fishys -
Are uv lights safe in my aquarium
Marshall replied to Marshall's topic in Plants, Algae, and Fertilizers
The uv light was a suggestion from the LFS , it's not something I would plan for long term use , tanks getting overhauled once we move just wanted to get any sort of idea what's going on -
Are uv lights safe in my aquarium
Marshall replied to Marshall's topic in Plants, Algae, and Fertilizers
That many critters , plus two adult snails one newborn snail and one platy fry the others got eaten lol doesn't get sunlight , gets the aquarium light for 4 to 6 hours a day this is some thing that just started happening over past 3 months had the tank for about 2 years now -
Ok so my 10 gallon tank is producing so much green water I can't keep up with it , within two days of doing major water changes you can't even see into the tank , I tried a hob filter that diddnt work I tried turning the light off , it got worse , I haven't dosed ferts in a month , will a uv filter help ? And will it be safe for my fish ? Other ideas are welcome , on a good note we had some platy fry show up in the tank out of no where

Ok , bought a glass lid at lfs , and a light off co op website among a few other things , having issues with algae growing almost faster then I can clean it on the glass lid . Any thoughts ? I have two snails and they keep the tank clean but they don't get the lid so wasn't sure if any one else has this issue , 10 gal tank , planted , two snails and two tetras in it , only using a sponge filter with air stone , ordering test strips today but water doesn't smell bad . Just a little earthy , also having some plant yellowing and die off , will follow up with water parameters when I get the strips

I have crushed Coral in the tank some times it sifts through it , I also feed it algae wafers with it seems to like seeing it polished my tank in three days of algae . I also go heavy on dry blood worms and xtreme flakes for the fish so there's plenty of food or so I thought , I will keep an eye on it and try the wonder shell

Every time I plant a root tab into my substrate my mystery snail digs it up and eats it ... Any thoughts ??

In drilling a round object it might be easier to wrap the coconut in a towel, put it in a bench vice with the area your drilling exposed and bore out the whole first. , Then cut the coconut in half , also wood turning chisels would be a good option because you can get them in a curved shape to scrape the coconut meat out

it all started a year ago my daughter 2years old wanted a tank , now we are here a year later , today we added two snails to the community and a grogu ( baby yoda ) to watch over them , all plants from the co op . Yes I know I need to clean it up but left it dirty so the snails can forage while getting used to the tank , she loves her fishys and keeps calling the shrimp lobsters and it's hilarious

I agree lava rock is nice and if you have a boring drill and the rock is big enough you can carve out nice channels that look similar to lava tubes I diddnt do that in this tank but there's lava rock in it and it holds a lot of bacteria because it's so porus and my shrimp love that it catches all the food that passes by it

Med trio and plants. What's your experience?
Marshall replied to Theresa_M's topic in Plants, Algae, and Fertilizers
I have used the co op trio on my planted tank as well. And if anything I noticed I had less algae after a week of treatment , plants diddnt even notice the meds
