  1. I had a similar situation last year when I was running a diy co2 system.  Some fish would swim around seemingly in a frenzied uncontrolled manner.  Often in circles from top to bottom of the aquarium.   The cherry shrimp we’re doing something similar.  But the guppies seemed fine.
I quickly became suspicious of the co2 system because the needle valve was not staying stable and the flow of co2 was fast then slow and needed hourly manual regulation.
I disengaged the co2 system completely and put in an air stone on an air pump.   The deaths stopped within 12 hours.  No new cases arised.  Unfortunately all the cherry shrimp were gone at that point.
I have not since restarted the co2 system.   And though my Amazon swords are not as quick growing as before, I’m no longer loosing fish 🐠 either.
    Thank goodness for root tabs👍

If your fish are making it into the aquarium live and healthy looking I seriously doubt ammonia poisoning is a factor.  But if you are concerned about this you could always insert an air stone into the bag while it floats for temp. I do this for large fish or bags with many fish in them.

  2. He is pretty banged up

when my panda Cory got fin rot and ich I asked about the salt thing. I was told they could tolerate it. He was quarantined, then I used  ich ,x , salt and an antibiotic.  He was acting like his old self in two days.  In 5 days he looked perfect.   I’m proud of both of us that he pulled through and is now back with his mates.

Im prayin your Cory makes a full recovery.

  3. Mine is doing fantastic for now!

got it at the co-op.  The plant was so tiny when I received it that the leaves didn’t even reach the rim of the pot it was in.  So I left it in the pot and it has tripled in size.  Didn’t melt back at all.  It’s gorgeous!

I assume I’ll have to take it out at some point, but for now it’s too pretty to touch

the co-op does sell easy planters for keeping plants potted n an aquarium.  Maybe check those out?

Santa is bringing me the Ziss Brine Shrimp Hatchery, with all the fixins: Never Clog Airstone, USB Nano Air Pump, Fritz Freshwater Salt, and ACO Black Airline Tubing.

What will Santa be bringing you?

Congrats on the ZiSs hatchery.   I have it and love it!
I got myself and the whole family new higher speed internet for Christmas.  Now I can watch Cory and and others on iTunes and actually see their faces!   Not the blurry blobs I’m used to watching.  🤣🤣🤣🤣

  5. I have a similar tank as yours. No co2 injector currently.
I am currently keeping two giant to me Amazon swords with a third growing out.

I don’t know what this is called but I left it in the pot  it has tripled in size the last six weeks   it came from the co-op  as did all my anubias that are equally thriving

I can’t remember the name of this either but I love the purple undersides of the leaves  it is a stem plant that is rapidly growing without the aid of anything  I bought it on eBay   Lol 😆   Don’t you love those photobombers?😍

Sometimes pics can give one (me) a good nderstanding what someone is talking about.   I hope you don’t mind.

  6. Well I run two  hang on the back filters inn my 20 long.   Actually three f you count the sponge filter.
The reason is I wanted the extra filtering in the beginning was the wood I added to the tank made the water amber colored. I added it to help with removing it quicker.   I just never took out the extra filter.  Doesn’t seem to harm the fish or plants.  Can’t say there is any benefit from it either.
As mentioned earlier the live bacteria lives on all the plants and hard scapes in your tank, so it is not crucial for your filter media to be fully loaded right now.  As long as you have not cleaned the gravel or hard scapes at the same time.

  7. And here is where I suspect a problem lies. My ph is 8.2

I believe my water 💧 is hard but lacks minerals.  Is that possible? But. Didn’t want to add a wonder shell as I think it would further raise the ph in the tank

currently I have guppies , Corydorys and celestial pearl danios.   The fish do very well no problems there

as for feeding shrimp I feed flake food, shrimp pellets.  There is also tons f bio film everywhere.  I do mean tons as my tank is heavily planted and hard scraped with an abundance of algae covered rocks.   I also throw in an occasional zucchini.

Thank you for the responses.  And appreciate everyone’s input very much

  8. Hi every one.  It’s a snowy Sunday here today.  A perfect day to stay in and enjoy the forum.
I thought it might be interesting to update on the accidental guppy fry and ask a serious question about shrimp and snails.

first off here is those guppy fry I didn’t know what to do with.  They are now six weeks old and are growing by leaps and bounds.  I don’t think I’ve ever had a batch of fry grow this large so fast!   Technically they are blue dragon but I didn’t have control of who the male was.   So my line breeding program was side lined by this mishap, as I was trying to breed for specific traits. Oh well

Can you see that little male already coloring up?   Looks like he is going to be a beautiful blue just like his uncles. I’m just amazed at their size already and the fact they are coloring up

Now on to the question about shrimp and snails

I have some beautiful red snails that I like very much.   Also HAD some shrimp both amano and caradina   But these critters loose their shell color then die off.   The snails lay enough eggs to continue their species but the shrimp do not.   The shrimps should be easy to keep and even breed, but not n any of my 4 tanks   I know for a fact they are getting food as I have watched them eat.   I’m thinking it’s a water related issue but I don’t know what?
    any ideas?

    2 - 10 gallon

    5 - 40 gallon

    2 - 53 gallon

    2 - 75 gallon

    1 - 500 gallon

    6 - empties

This varies quite a bit, on July 1 of this year the only tank I had was the biggest one. Hanging out on this forum caused an explosion of new aquariums.

I have to ask.   What kind of fish does one place in a 500 gallon tank?

  10. I recently struggled with this issue myself.  I had an accidental and unwanted batch of guppy fry.   I didn’t want to keep them and I thought about turning them into fish food.  Almost did it too.  But then I was concerned about health issues that might arise and I chickened out.
I know that micheal (from Micheals fish room ). Feeds baby guppy’s to his fish sometimes so I know it can be done.
I have watched hundreds of breeder videos and read a lot online and one thing that breeders commonly say is to feed your fish a variety of foods.  I have adopted this for my small fish room and I’m glad did.

Lovely lily! If you keep the pads trimmed off at the base (the leaves floating at the top) it'll get even bushier. Here's mine:

But the pads are really neat too.

Also, try not to worry too much about others opinions on what fish you decide to keep. It's your hobby, enjoy it how you like. It's all a learning and growing experience and I'm sure you provide your pets with the best life possible.

Lovely.  Your aquarium is perfection.  Thank you for the advice.

Are you still planing to add angels, I think the plantinums like you mentioned wood look gourgoues in this tank.

Yes I. Still going to add the angelfish.   Though I think I’ll wait until sometime after the new year when the shipping gets less hectic.  I think right now it would be risky.

Everyone loves mollies! Some people like balloon fish, others not so much, nothing wrong either way as it is just an aesthetic choice.

About the mollies.  They are balloon mollies.   Quite a few hobbyist believe these to be inhumane   Because of the arched spine short bodies and large bellies.  One person said it was despicable to keep such fish.  Another person listed it as one of the top ten ugliest fish in the aquarium.  Several other words were used  as well but I’d rather stay out of the controversy, except to say in my opinion the neon lyretails are quite beautiful and cute as heck.
