please ID mystery fish that hitchhiked with barbs
HelplessNewbie replied to HelplessNewbie's topic in General Discussion
It turns out inland silversides have large eyes, have lengths 6-7 times depth of body and upturned mouths. Based on mouth alone, "Mysterio", as I have begun calling him/her, has a mouth that is in the middle. -

Oh, thank you for doing that! My fish doesn't have blue eyes nor fan-like nor blade-like fins, so I am looking more closely at inland silversides. I believe @macdaddy36mentioned silversides -

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I tried to look at several images. This was the closest I could find: telematherina bonte, but the dorsal fin on mine isn't as pointy, and I cannot tell if these are yellowish, or only appeared yellow because of the light. The third photo of the bonte shows silver-gray. -

Hopefully, this mystery fish will not grow big nor become aggressive. So far, it seems peaceful. -

If it helps, here is a video: https://photos.app.goo.gl/B96fKeatZHVoerQs9 Yes, there appear to be 2 dorsal fins. -

The seller got back to me. The barbs were raised in a tank that had very large rainbowfish, but that was over a year ago. He thinks it looks like a washed out danio, but he never owned any danio. The mystery continues... -
how to tell when Bolivian rams have paired off?
HelplessNewbie replied to HelplessNewbie's topic in General Discussion
Not currently eating. I tried Xtreme nano pellets and Bug Bites Tropical flakes. They are frozen in place. I am going to siphon it out and try frozen daphnia, if the food doesn't disappear an hour later. I have a lot of endlers, and I am okay with treating them as well. They are in my plant nursery/quarantine and won't be joining the general population any time soon. -

I got them at a swap meet. I suppose I can try locating the seller... -
how to tell when Bolivian rams have paired off?
HelplessNewbie replied to HelplessNewbie's topic in General Discussion
It is a 10g tub, cycled, 6 months old. They are perched, not on their side. I wonder if it might help to have some dither fish? I can add a m/f pair of endlers. -

Wow, I really like these kubotai rasbora! Their green color is eye-catching. They are not shy at all and school nicely. I ordered 16 more. -

Thank you for the advice! They just spent their first night in quarantine. Is it normal for them to just be laying on the floor of the quarantine tub? -
Recommendation for quieter air pump set up
HelplessNewbie replied to jkh772's topic in General Discussion
I followed this to quiet my ACO air pump... https://youtu.be/3JNcwZC-1To?si=CPueq3QnOS4rXDlY but I filled the jar/vase with polyfill, instead of leaving it empty. I shared the before and after decibel readings: I did the same with a nano air pump that was noisy, too. Not sure if this was what you were looking for, but anyway. good luck! -

Thank you! -
I have 9 Bolivian rams in quarantine. I intend to keep 2 pairs and sell the rest. How can I tell that they have paired off? Will they exhibit mating behavior even while in quarantine? Wasn't sure if I should ask this in Fish Breeding.

Stocked the tank with: 8 kubotai rasbora 5 cw097 cory (1 died in quarantine) 8 cherry barb 1 amano shrimp (2 died in quarantine) In a few days, I will add 10 serpae tetra. 9 Bolivian rams are currently quarantining. I may sell off a number of these, since I only planned on one pair. -

We did 30% water change, since nitrites went from 7ppm 2 days ago to zero yesterday and today, and nitrates were 50ppm. Then, we put in the plants!!! Plants were quarantined for 2 weeks, then reverse respiration treated for only 2 hours. We actually don't mind snails in our tanks. I ran out of seltzer water, so, there is one more bunch of ludwigia waiting to be planted. With ludwigia: -
Thanks all for the input. Yes, the photo shows the snail crawling on a black jar that houses my diy filter. It is not crawling on the glass. I didn't buy any nerite snail, though it could have hitchhiked on plants. It is small, like my bladder snails. Since the yoda ears are prominent, I believe it is a pond snail. I just thought it odd that it has white flesh
-
Thank you!

This snail has a white body with white-yellow shell. I think those are "Yoda" ears. Can you confirm if this is a pond snail?

We use greenhouse sheets, as mentioned above. Cory has a youtube video on this. Here is a photo of mine (lid was lifted a little because I had some airline wedged in there): https://forum.aquariumcoop.com/topic/33733-helplessnewbies-20g-planted-tank/?do=findComment&comment=321291

No, my main goal is cleanup of detritus and plant debris. -

I would rather not have to involve a bucket, even with wheels. Perhaps, it may help if I provide some examples of what I was thinking of? If no one has tried these or similar designs, I might report on my findings later on. -

It is what my hubby has been doing, but I was hoping to contribute to the upkeep of our tanks, even though my disability severely limits my movements and how long and often I can do them. Bending down and lifting buckets is a restriction.
