Once your plants get bigger, they will mop up your nitrates.
I couldn't worry too much.
That is a shame about your town's tap water!
-
I want a herd of them, but worry about feeding.
They are so CUTE. -
This is why I hesitate to keep little pea puffers: I worry about feeding them.

Hello.
Well, it started early in the week. I saw one lone fry. Then two more.
Then four, etc.Today I spotted three more!
I have seven of them in a Lee Net Breeder.
Two more are still in the tank, but catching them is elusive.
They are about a half inch long. (12.7 mm).
Eating quite well on a jar of BBS I ordered from Aquarium Co-Op.
Can't promise pictures, I'm terrible at pics! I may try.
There must be enough paramecium for the babies to live off of?
It's very exciting.
edited for clarity.- 3

Gorgeous and fascinating fish.
Always wanted a shoal of them. -
@Chick-In-Of-TheSea I love that you brought home two little tetras by accident.
This morning I was gazing in my tank, and two, yes TWO MORE little babies popped up.
So I have six of them now.

Ohhh, my Head and Taillight Tetras surprised me with four little fry.
At first I just saw one.
Imagine my surprise when three more popped up!
They're in a net breeder now, floating in the main tank.- 2

Yes! Such great shows.

Of course I remember Flipper! I used to watch that and Daktari!
Welcome. A friendly bunch of folks swim here.- 1

I have a 20 gallon long, and do 20% water changes weekly.
My nitrates are zero, b/c I have Pothos, etc growing out of the top.
I'm thinking about going to 30% a week.
I have 11 Head and Tail light Tetras and one little Honey Gorami (Hermann).
I think water changes are the equivalent of airing out your house.- 1

I love it! It's amazing how fast MTS takes over. 😁
You're setting a good example for your son too!
Showing an interest in nature is always a plus.
Your tanks are *chefs kiss gorgeous!!

I would love to try and breed them.
Other wise than that, I'm just enjoying them!

Well, my little Neons didn't make it.
Nothing I did, they just were too stressed from shipping.
Here is my tank now with 11 Head and Taillight Tetras, and one Honeynamed Hermann. (he is shy)

I contacted a LFS yesterday to ask whether they sold Purple Pencilfish or Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish. I was so happy to learn that they had both. I've never owned these, so I have no idea how much they normally sell for. The Rainbowfish were $13, and the Pencilfish were $12. Does that sound about right? I don't think I've paid that much for Nano fish before, not even for CPDs. I did find both available online for about half off, but I can't speak to the quality.
Yes that sounds about right.
And they both need to be kept in groups of 6 or more.

This is where I get frustrated with this hobby. What works for some does not work for others. Increase the light for better growth, but decrease it to reduce algae. 🤦🏻 I guess it’s all about balance.
I feel this!
I grow houseplants, and start my own vegetable seeds, have a garden, blah, blah.
Aquatic plants are challenging.
They're underwater so you cannot move them around to better light as you can with a houseplant.
Plus you are dealing with artificial light, which is a poor substitute for sunlight.
Sunlight just cannot be replaced, no matter how great the lights are.
It's tough. I've just come to accept that some plants I cannot grow in my tank.
I'd love to have some red ones, but I do not think they'd do well.

You can use water from your hot water tank.
Fill bottles up with the water and float them. -

Same on the taking over my brain part. That's not unusual for me and one of the reasons I read about keeping fish for a while before buying anything, a lot of times planning for whatever takes hold of my brain is enough to make it let go. When I'd been reading for a few weeks and still really wanted to do it, then I decided to do it. Part of it is definitely that it's been a while since we've had any animals since we had to put our dog to sleep (very sad but she was old and it was the right thing to do). Fish are good because I'm not home for a big part of the day now so it can't really have something that will need lots of attention every day. And they're just cool!
Interesting, I do the same thing when something grabs my attention. I'm sorry about your dog.
You are right fish are easy for people "on the go" and they are just cool! -

Plus I've heard you can go out to the ditch and just scoop up amazing fish that escape farms during hurricanes.
Be still my heart. 🤩
That sounds like heaven.

Oh heavens, this is what happened to me.
I've been out of the hobby since 2004-ish, went into my LFS to pick up something super expensive for my doggo, and ended up staring at one Neon Tetra.
I swear it was like a physical "thing" took over my brain.
Like an ex smoker taking a hit off a cigarette I just HAD to have a pack of Neon Tetras.
I've had chickens, goats, worked with cows, but I cannot keep them here, and I MISS my little fish friends.
From then on it was a race to find used equipment, (all my old aquarium stuff is in Northern NYS) and dust off my nets.
WELCOME to the Wet Side!
Edit: your tank is looking good!

When may I move into your fish room? Holy Cow that is so impressive!!
Welcome!! -
David, have you ever watched the YouTube channel, KeepingFishSimple?
He was able to successfully breed his Neons!.
He explained it in depth, so well, at some point I'm going to attempt it.
They're one of my favorite little fish- 1

Call of Cthulhu by HP Lovecraft
Still new to reading as a hobby so I'm starting by going through some of the classics. Pretty sure At The Mountains of Madness is still going to be my favorite Lovecraft story by the time I'm finished with it though since Cthulhu is spending time with drawing out backstories on characters I just don't care about.
I would love to visit his grave in Rhode Island.

My dad was a woodworker and a construction worker and I wish he was still alive. I think I can probably actually fashion a mission style that would hold it, but... I do not want to *leans head back and sighs* but I will. But not right now. Maybe in 6 months.
I'm sorry you lost your father.
No matter how old you are, it is still very hard to lose a parent.
A mission style would be very classy AND sturdy. -

I have a dream. The dream is a 120 gallon without an ugly stand. All the stands I see online are ugly and everyone is all "you can't use a dresser".
Made me laugh but it is true.
Maybe if you know anyone handy, they could build you one?- 1
