  1. That is an excellent use of coconut coir matting!
  2. Once your plants get bigger, they will mop up your nitrates. I couldn't worry too much. That is a shame about your town's tap water!
  3. I want a herd of them, but worry about feeding. They are so CUTE.
  4. This is why I hesitate to keep little pea puffers: I worry about feeding them.
  5. Hello. Well, it started early in the week. I saw one lone fry. Then two more. Then four, etc. Today I spotted three more! I have seven of them in a Lee Net Breeder. Two more are still in the tank, but catching them is elusive. They are about a half inch long. (12.7 mm). Eating quite well on a jar of BBS I ordered from Aquarium Co-Op. Can't promise pictures, I'm terrible at pics! I may try. There must be enough paramecium for the babies to live off of? It's very exciting. edited for clarity.
  6. Gorgeous and fascinating fish. Always wanted a shoal of them.
  7. @Chick-In-Of-TheSea I love that you brought home two little tetras by accident. This morning I was gazing in my tank, and two, yes TWO MORE little babies popped up. So I have six of them now. :D
  8. Ohhh, my Head and Taillight Tetras surprised me with four little fry. At first I just saw one. Imagine my surprise when three more popped up! They're in a net breeder now, floating in the main tank.
  9. Of course I remember Flipper! I used to watch that and Daktari! Welcome. A friendly bunch of folks swim here.
  10. I have a 20 gallon long, and do 20% water changes weekly. My nitrates are zero, b/c I have Pothos, etc growing out of the top. I'm thinking about going to 30% a week. I have 11 Head and Tail light Tetras and one little Honey Gorami (Hermann). I think water changes are the equivalent of airing out your house.
  11. I love it! It's amazing how fast MTS takes over. 😁 You're setting a good example for your son too! Showing an interest in nature is always a plus. Your tanks are *chefs kiss gorgeous!!
  12. I would love to try and breed them. Other wise than that, I'm just enjoying them!
  13. Well, my little Neons didn't make it. Nothing I did, they just were too stressed from shipping. Here is my tank now with 11 Head and Taillight Tetras, and one Honey named Hermann. (he is shy)
  14. Yes that sounds about right. And they both need to be kept in groups of 6 or more.
  15. I feel this! I grow houseplants, and start my own vegetable seeds, have a garden, blah, blah. Aquatic plants are challenging. They're underwater so you cannot move them around to better light as you can with a houseplant. Plus you are dealing with artificial light, which is a poor substitute for sunlight. Sunlight just cannot be replaced, no matter how great the lights are. It's tough. I've just come to accept that some plants I cannot grow in my tank. I'd love to have some red ones, but I do not think they'd do well.
  16. You can use water from your hot water tank. Fill bottles up with the water and float them.
  17. Interesting, I do the same thing when something grabs my attention. I'm sorry about your dog. You are right fish are easy for people "on the go" and they are just cool!
  18. Be still my heart. 🤩 That sounds like heaven. Welcome friend!
  19. Welcome!! Oh heavens, this is what happened to me. I've been out of the hobby since 2004-ish, went into my LFS to pick up something super expensive for my doggo, and ended up staring at one Neon Tetra. I swear it was like a physical "thing" took over my brain. Like an ex smoker taking a hit off a cigarette I just HAD to have a pack of Neon Tetras. I've had chickens, goats, worked with cows, but I cannot keep them here, and I MISS my little fish friends. From then on it was a race to find used equipment, (all my old aquarium stuff is in Northern NYS) and dust off my nets. WELCOME to the Wet Side! Edit: your tank is looking good!
  20. When may I move into your fish room? Holy Cow that is so impressive!! Welcome!!
  21. David, have you ever watched the YouTube channel, KeepingFishSimple? He was able to successfully breed his Neons!. He explained it in depth, so well, at some point I'm going to attempt it. They're one of my favorite little fish
  22. I would love to visit his grave in Rhode Island.
  23. I'm sorry you lost your father. No matter how old you are, it is still very hard to lose a parent. A mission style would be very classy AND sturdy.
  24. Made me laugh but it is true. Maybe if you know anyone handy, they could build you one?
