So being it doesn't fit your tank it still helps the plant's that's around the ugf?

I’m not sure what you mean by it helping the plants - my tank is heavily planted and you would not know where the UGF is by looking at the plant growth.

  2. I have used HOBs in conjunction with under gravel, because I like to have a lot of filtration.

When I purchased my current 45, I want an under gravel for it, and the owner of the lfs scoffed at me that I was out of date with the times.  ( ok, whatever…).  So, I pulled the UGF out of the 30 gallon tank that I was upgrading from and put it in the 45.   It doesn’t cover the entire bottom, but it does cover about 2/3 of it, with a power head to drive the turnover.   And, I have a HOB in addition to that.   It works great!

Might I suggest adding some undergravel filter plates if you are doing a teardown.

They are cheap, last for a very long time and add a huge amount of biofiltration requiring minimal maintenance and are an excellent supplement to whatever other filtration you might opt for.

I wholeheartedly second this!   I have no idea why they declined in popularity because they are so effective.

  4. It occurred to me that since I put a couple oh kuhli loaches in my 20g, I’ve not seen nearly any bladder snails.   Now mind you, I did launch a snail picking campaign as well, but I’m confident there was no way I could have been that effective!  Do you think the kuhli loaches had a hand in knocking their numbers down?   And if so, do you think that success would translate over to the trumpet snail invasion currently assaulting my 45g?

(please say yes, please say yes, please say yes……)

  5. Yeah, there are zero lfs’s that aren’t at least an hour from me.   In the dead of winter, in western New York, looks like it will be a while before I get any more fish.    I guess I’ll just have to live vicariously through you all.

  6. I haven’t gotten that far yet, so I’m going to say about yay long, by yay wide, by yay tall.    🤣

I think about 36” long maybe 6” wide, by 8”ish tall.   But just guessing!

I’m still in the stage where I go into the store and ogle it, oooh and aaah over it and pet it.  And think about where I could put it!

@xXInkedPhoenixX - the stone floor of your ruin is killing me, darn you!

Would you rather have a beautiful tank that everyone except you loves or have an ugly tank that others cannot stand, but you're in love with?

You're breeding your absolute favorite fish: would you rather they have amazing, top tier offspring that you cannot ever see or pretty good offspring that you can see?

A tank that I love, because I do this for myself.

Depends on the fish-  am I breeding Congo tetras?  They’re staying with me.  If I’m breeding neons, well, they’re little jerks, so I’d be ok never seeing them again! LOL
