  1. I have regular gravel. The filter is a Tidal 35 HOB in which I have the included coarse filter sponge and bio media.

I used the API master test kit before the planting, cleaning on Sunday and had a pH of 6.8, 0 ppm Ammonia, 0 ppm Nitrite and 80 Nitrates. On Tuesday I checked with the Aquarium Coop test strips and had Nitrite and Nitrate was at 10. I added One and Only nitrifying on Tuesday. Last night I did a 25% water change. The test strips still showed high nitrite this morning. I did not feed yesterday, but fed a little this morning. If the Nitrite its still high tonight I'll do a 50% water change. The plants look good. From my initial plants 2 had dies and I removed the java moss because I didn't like the look of it. On Sunday I added about 8 plants.

Again, thank you all for being so helpful!

  2. Thank you all. It sounds like I did too much. Hopefully lesson learned and I'll "do less" with my aquarium. I did a water change tonight and will test again tomorrow. I'd like to get a few more fish, slowly. But I think I should set up a quarantine tank first and not chance it.

  3. My 20 gallon long has been up since November. I have 6 neon tetras and some plants. On Sunday I added more plants, that is the picture I uploaded. I had a nitrite spike a day after the initial plant adding and then again last night. My guess is ammonia went up too but I tested when after the ammonia had dropped and nitrite was high, about 10 ppm according to the test strips. Normally I have 0 ppm when I test with strips or API master test kit. I test before I do my weekly water change. In both cases I did a gravel vac, added root tabs, planted and rinsed my HOB filter media in tank water. I also noticed that the tank is cloudy and clears up after a few days.

Maybe when I plant I stir up detritus and that causes the cloudiness and spike. Maybe I'm cleaning the filter too much, although I have rinsed filter media at other times without an issue. Can root tabs cause cloudiness? I added about 20.

To alleviate the issue I added fresh beneficial bacteria. Tonight I'm planning on doing a 50% water change. Last night I got home too late to start a water change, so it had to wait.

Any thoughts? Maybe it's just new tank syndrome?

  4. As the title suggests, I have a 20 gallon long tank with a Finnex Stingray. I have never had plants and would like to add some. My tank is new and only has 6 neon tetras for now. They've been in the tank for less than 2 weeks. When I search through the plants there is the option to search based on light requirements. The tank gets pretty bright when I have turned on the lights. What level of light requirements does this setup allow?

pH = 6.8, Ammonia = 0ppm, Nitrites = 0 ppm, Nitrates = 25 ppm. This was tested with the API Master Test Kit. Temperature is <78'

  5. I just wanted to finish this thread. The 2nd GBR died the other day. I emptied the QT and rinsed the tank and equipment. I will do a bleach wash and extensive rinsing and let it all air dry. Then I'll set it up again and do a more patient fishes cycle.

  6. I had to get up in the middle of the night so I checked on the tank. The fish that was having a tough time died. The other fish seems the same as usual. He hangs out by his pvc pipe but he's not gasping for air. I'm going to pick up Prime after work.

Two things that I am learning. One is that I did not prepare the QT tank properly, it was not fully cycled and I got impatient. The other is, don't listen to the LFS guy. I told him I am a beginner and when I got home pretty much every reference said that GBRs are not great for beginners. Also, I bought neon tetras at the same time, they are the first fish in the main tank. Neon tetras seem to like 72' - 76', GBRs seem to like 84' - 86'. Also, my main tank has gravel, GBRs like sand. So I am compromising. Yes, I'm blaming the LFS to some extent. My thinking is you go to a LFS and pay more to get better service. But in reality I need to do a better job with preparation and research.

I don't know what to do with the GBR. For now I just need to keep him alive! I'd give him away if I knew someone who was experienced. Then I would disinfect the QT, cycle it with more patience and get a honey gourami.

  7. I’m a bit worried about my German Blue Rams. They’ve been in the QT for less than a week. My Nitrite is .5 ppm with the API test kit. Ammonia is 0 ppm and Nitrate is 5 ppm. I just did a ~38% water change after testing. They look colorful, but they are not overly active. Once in a while they’ll move around fine or even go at each other a little. Generally they just hang out. They’re not at the top of the tank gasping for air. But their mouths move a lot like kissing motions, not at each other. They move their pectoral fins a lot just staying in 1 place. This is after the water change, so maybe they’re anxious. When I feed them they don’t go for the food like the neon tetras in the main tank do. I’m feeding Hikari micro pellets. But I have seen them eat detritus. I attached a picture of one of them.

Any advice? Am I over thinking? I can pick up some more beneficial bacteria tomorrow if needed, or just test and water change.

  8. I feel a bit stupid, not about the typo, lol. I should have researched more. The LFS told me that the GBR and Neon Tetras could live in the same tank. But as I'm reading now Neon Tetras like 72' - 76' and GBR likes 84' - 86'. This could explain why the GBR is so sedate. I will say the Tetras seem happy!

  9. Hi all. Many years ago I decided get an aquarium. So I went saltwater and corals and failed at fish. I just went too far, too fast. Let me put it this way, I had no basic idea of the nitrogen cycle at all. Over the last few months I started seeing freshwater planted aquariums in my YouTube feed. So recently I got a 20 foot long and also got a 10 gallon quarantine tank. I started a fishes cycle in them. In the 20 long I have gravel and rocks. My plan is to add a few plants after the quarantine period is over, and then some driftwood. I know I could have put in plants right away but wanted to go slow. Tonight I picked up 6 Neon Tetras and put them in the 20, and a German Blue Ram in the 10 for now. The Ram is very shy and is staying behind the sponge filter. The tetras seem curious about the tank, although freaked out when I turned on the tank light. Anyway, hello! I hope I do well with my tanks and have happy fish!
