  1. I dont have Co2 set up with mine. Just sponge filter and small powerhead type filter. Stocked with guppies. Its a 20Gal long tank with a 24 in finnex stingray light. Cause its a shallow tank i tend to get alot of green water. Gonna try installing a dimmer switch like ive seen dean do on the co-op channel.

  2. Recently got scarlett temples from the coop. Its been about a month or so and ive supplemented with easy green and root tabs. But the plants seem to rot from roots, leaves fall off and the ones that are still on look discolored and wilted. Ive gotten Anubais and Pogostemon Stellatus Octopus and i cant seem to kill those. Never had a red plant or these temples before so its new for me. What am i doing wrong? Can i save these or do i buy new ones and start over?

  3. So i went to petco and bought those java ferns plants they sell in the tubes with the gel at the bottom and they seem to be doing well in the tank. Have them glued to some driftwood.  Im seeing stems and leaves sprouting from the existing leaves. Is that normal and can i propograte? Ill drop a picture when i get back home.

I wouldnt be surprised if something went wrong in petco (they get their fish from the same exporters as lfs but, a large majority of petco/smart dont house their live animals in the best condition, now that isnt all, I have some pretty rocking petco/smarts near me; one introduced the bettas into the tanks, with good tankmates!)

Ive heard and read in forums that petcos and petsmarts and sometimes even lfs sometimes  mislabel fish, so thats a possiblity. Was just curious of how many brisltenose pleco types were there. I would think with so many species out there, some would maybe grow larger than others.

Meet Vader my Bristlenose pleco. Had him for 4 years now when he was maybe only half an inch long. But he grew alot bigger and faster than my albino pleco. Id say that Vader is about 7-8 inches now and the albino is about 5 inches and ive had him longer.

Im actually really curious if hes just a regular bristlenose or if a different strain considering he’s so much bigger than my albino.

My guess on the second pair of plants is Bolbitis heudelotii or African Water Fern.  Not quite as easy as Anubias and tends to fade away gradually since it isn’t submerse year round in its native habitat, but sometimes will settle in and do beautifully so it’s worth trying.

The Anubias could be several species or varieties, lanceolata, glabra, congensis, minima, barteri ‘Butterfly’, to name a few.  If I could tell how big that is it might knock out minima.

The leaves on the “African Water fern” kinda remind me of a small parsley or cilantro plant haha. Found a better picture of it online. For anyone that needs an example. Thanks!spacer.png

Hi @MannyThakk - that sounds great! I have a 20 long, 10 gallon, and am setting up a 20 high - basically building a little fish wall in my home office. Each tank has different substrate, plants, and filtration (tho each has a sponge filter) so I can figure out what I like before going any bigger.

Just send me a message if/when you'd like the fry - they are super healthy. May be a challenge to catch in my heavily planted tank but we'll get em! If you'd like some stem plant clipping I can prob give you some too.

Thanks alot that would be great! Im still pretty new when it comes to plants so all the help and tips would be great! I work in the south side of chicago (nights unfortunately) so that does make pick up a bit easier so you wouldnt have to go anywhere

Hi all - I live in Chicago, north side Wicker/Humboldt Park area. Anybody else? Just looking for folks to meet and swap with.

I live bout an hour from chicago. Dont have many fish friends. What size tank(s) do you have? I have a male ablino brislenose im considering to trade for a female. If youd like to off load some platy fry ill take some off your hands! Ive got a 55 gal so they will have plenty of room to grow. In the process of adding more plants too.

    Hey everyone.

I know not everyone likes to think about this aspect, and most don’t want to talk about it, but I’m curious; when you need to cull, how do you do it?

I’ve had to euthanize a couple fish throughout my couple of years hobby, unfortunately. I’ve had some fish with tumors, some that appeared to not be having a great quality of life, etc. The best way I’ve found/used is with clove oil.

I’m currently in a bit of a quandary in that I have a couple Angels I’ve raised and want to trade soon, but I’ve noticed a couple are missing gill plates on one side, and another has a bent ventral fin. While the fish are absolutely healthy and otherwise are doing incredible, I really don’t want to taint my reputation with my LFS’s by knowingly trading fish that I feel are subpar.

I also have a couple of Glowlight Tetra’s that swim almost vertically. I’m chalking this up to old age as I’ve had them for 2.5-3 years, and they still look healthy. I believe these fish are still living a great life, so I have no need to euthanize them at this point, but should the day come that they cross the line to not living a good life I want to be prepared.

This post is mainly about the Angels as the whole reason I raised them was to trade them. As much as I’d love to keep a separate tank of misfits I couldn’t sell it’s just not possible due to space. My 2 bedroom apartment is MAXED out with tanks at this point, lol.

When you have to cull fish, what’s the most humane way you’ve found to do so?

Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts, opinions, and experiences on such a sensitive topic.

Ive seen peope like someone has mentioned before to give them for free on craigslist, facebook, offerup. Etc. Maybe even consider someone that has turtles or bigger fish they can use as feeders? Ive heard @Cory mention that on his livestreams. I pick up baby guppies for my senegal bichir to feed on. Had a few grow to adults and simply just make more fry!

  15. Recently went to Aquashella in chicago and picked up a 5 pack of anubias from one of the vendors and someone offered to swap 2 of them for another plant. Figured it would be cool to have different plants rather than 5 of the same to see what grows and looks the best. Not sure what kind it is, how to plant (on wood or in substrate). Ive left them in the provided planters for now. New to this forum and need help. I know i have 3 anubias plants which look like the first picture. Not sure what the other plants are. Thanks!
