I was just watching MD Tanks’ video on using landscaping blocks to terrace in an aquarium.

Has anyone tried blocks or bricks in their aquariums or ponds? MD said soaking in water for 8 days will remove any chemicals. What’s your experience with leaching into the water? TIA

I haven't tried landscaping bricks but did try a cement figurine once. Did not do well. Clay pots are great to lift things off the bottom and I've used plastic shelving before too.

  2. I am so tempted to wake up the pond for the summer. The nice weather in Seattle had my pond sitting at 78 degrees last night. I don't quite trust the weather to keep it up yet though. Did a bit of maintenance on it and found that there's a huge mat of java moss on the bottom and some of the other plants put leaves to the top. I think I'm going to get a lily bulb going now, but wait to put it outside until I have a good sprout on top. The pond started as a bare bottom, but now has about 1/4" of mulm and such. Thinking about adding aquarium gravel to better anchor plants, thoughts on keeping that sort of clean?

Whiteclouds have done great overwintering for the last two years. Hoping to add some platinum rice fish and shiners this year.

  3. Thanks for the help everyone. Tank temp is 74. Noticed that both fish seen to have some very stringy poop that is still attached to their anus. The female actually looks like the anus is swollen, but I don't know enough about the fish to tell if that's normal. Could they be constipated from the store I got them from? My tank has plenty of algae to eat, that's why I got them.

  4. Evening all,

I'm having no luck with flagfish lately. First try, male and female, had the male pass within a week. Received a replacement and had both fish go within a month. Tried again, with a more mature pair from a different store, and they're both hiding in the plants in the substrate, added 4 days ago. I'm sure it has to do with my water, but I can't figure it out. Tank is 8 years old, 29 gallon, filled with espei raspbora, cardinal tetras, and a yoyo loach. Had an SAE but thought it was aggressive and moved it a couple days ago. Added marycyn and prazi today in case they came in with something.

Test strips show 25ppm nitrate, 150 GH, 80 KH, and 6.8-7.2pH.

Kind of a long shot, I know, but thought some people might have other ideas.

    Thanks!

  5. Yeah no worries, thanks for the compliments! I took the big sticker off the side with a heat gun and goof off, real pain in the butt. Sanded it all down with a medium grit and then painted the outside with rustoleum and the inside with plasti-dip. The plasti-dip comes off on the rails but seems to have held up well under water. I let everything cure and off gas for a week but not sure if that's necessary.

  6. Hmm tried another strip and got a similar reading. There is a little overspray from the neighbors garden but really not much, maybe that's it though. No wrigglers yet, still pretty early in Seattle, and the white clouds keep the mosquitoes down. Everybody seems happy and we're great last summer, so I'll keep on keeping on.

    Thanks!

  7. Afternoon all!

I just did a co-op dip strip in my horse trough pond and noticed about 1.5 chlorine. Everything else looked ok but I haven't changed water in this in over a year. Nothing but rain going in and no runoff from a roof or anything. My only guess would be the barley straw I'm using to help the algae bloom, adding something that the strip is picking up.

    Thanks for your thoughts!

They don't sell the stickers in the retail store?

They do, and I have purchased them. But if I make an order online and have it shipped, the sticker and possibly an insulated bag is included. Like I said, it's a totally first world problem, but there is some incentive to not go to the retail store and make my dry good purchases online.

  9. I would love to get my hands on a few of the stickers, but unfortunately I live only a few minutes from the store and it doesn't make sense for me to purchase from the website. First world problem, I know, but the stickers and the insulated bags are a nice perk for making online orders not available to those fortunate enough to live close by. I bought two stickers for my girls as stocking stuffers last year, the shrimp looks great on a laptop and the betta was awesome on a water bottle until it was washed too many times.

Any way to tie stickers to YouTube membership, similar to the in store discount?

  10. That was my next trick, I have some levamisol in the cabinet. Would that show up after a year or two?

I've also not been able to get this fish to eat any other live foods, just snails...

    Thanks

  11. Hey all,

I've had this fish for over a year and could never get it to eat anything but snails. The last few weeks I've noticed that it's really skinny but still eating. Today it looks like there's a small fungus on it's lip and boy is it skinny. I've started salt in the tank but am wondering if anyone had other ideas? Parasite that just showed up?

    Thanks!

    Looks similar to this problem:

Yup that's exactly what it looks like when they're in the water. I've tried ich-x but I'm not sure it's done anything. I'm just culling anything i see like that now. About 1 a week or so but it does seem to be improving. This might just be a long term fight.

  13. I thought maybe as well, but I'm not really near a natural water source and they'd have to scale the side. I really wouldn't mind some tree frogs though.

Side note, just saw my first fry in the pond. White clouds don't waste time 😄

  14. Just got my patio built and pond set up. Very excited to move up from a bucket! Currently filled with a school of white clouds and all the pond and ramshorn snails I could pull out of the bucket. Hoping for some orange rice fish in the near future, and I'm starting to plan the rest of the plants for along the back. I don't want to break this down over winter so everything needs to be Seattle winter hardy. Have a good suggestion and where I could get it?

Also, any thoughts on the eggs on my salvinia? Don't look like snail eggs to me.

  15. Yeah thanks. I'm not too happy about this but hopefully i can be aggressive and keep it down. Interesting that it's just really showing up now, I've had this tank for a year and haven't added anything new. I'll see what I can do with culling and ich-x.

This is a new disease for me, which is interesting. Usually I've at least heard of something, this wasn't even on my radar.

    Edit - adding picture

    Afternoon all!

I have found three cherry shrimp like this today, though the image is the worst of them. It looks like small eggs, but I've never seen them this small or this color before. These all look like male shrimp too, so I'm double confused. All my other shrimp look great, including the normal berried females. Only RCS, one small and two endlers (just popping fry today!) in an established 10 gallon.

    Thank you all!
