  1. It's a dangerous thing to have a fish store next to a venue my son takes a study course at. For 45 minutes, I can wander the aisles gazing into lovely aquascapes, ogling over fish & axolotls and other aquatic goodness. Yesterday as I was waiting for my son to finish his class, I spontaneously purchased a buce velvet tricolor plant. I was told its care is on par with an anubias and a great beginner plant. Currently it's placed on the bottom of my tank. It's roots are so tiny I can't anchor them with the gravel. Can I just let it sit there until the roots take hold? Both my anubias plants had roots long enough to put gravel on top of.
  2. Amazon has the Romsto LED Full Spectrum Plant Light for Indoor Plants on sale for less than $12. It's a small light on a telescopic pole (I would attach to the outside of the tank) and I was wondering if it would be compatible for a planted tank.
  3. Nitrite levels have plummeted in the last 48hrs! From💀 to⚠️-- 10.0 readings to 1.0!! Nitrates are less than 20ppm What a relief! My pH is up, but still in safe parameters. (from the baking soda) My alkalinity is reading ideal. THANK YOU!! Y'all have been so very helpful!
  4. I have two large Mt Olive pickle jars that I fill with (city) tap water and treat with Tetra AquaSafe for Bettas. I test them before I do a water change & they are nitrite/nitrate free. I would say the Prime is doing something as Miso is doing alright through this escapade. I've got some melting going on with my frogbit, but I can always replace that. Thank you everyone for your help & all the suggestions.
  5. Just picked up Jungle aquarium salt and treating today. Fingers are crossed! If I'm adding the salt today, can I add the baking soda at the same time?
  6. Hmm, I believe I got some bad advice as the LFS folk told me to not do frequent water changes. I was thinking dilution was the solution. Thank you.
  7. Ugh. I'm on Week 4 of trying to get my nitrites under control in my 3 gallon tank. Bless my betta for riding this roller coaster with me. I had my water tested at my LFS which confirmed my ludacris levels. They recommended that I treat my tank with Aquavitro Seed bacteria for seven days. Did this to no avail. Went back LFS and they said to keep treating with Seed until my levels came down. I have since emptied that bottle dosing the tank. Ended up at Petco one afternoon and they recommended treating with Seachem Prime - the emergency dosage. The nitrites levels didn't budge. I hand feed Miso (Betta) so little to no food is wasted. I needed to vacuum the gravel & decor this weekend so I did approx 50% water change. The water going into the tank measures at 0 nitrates and nitrites. I use a sponge filter and have frogbit & two anubias plants. I have noticed my frogbit is suffering and my dark leafed anubias now has a light green leaf. What is going on?!? I will add that I tried growing a water lily bulb mid-August. By September 13th, the bulb hadn't sprouted. That and little white spores began growing on it (pictured) so I pulled it from the tank. Is this new tank syndrome? Do I need a different filters, another filter? More plants? The tank has been running since July 31st and for all of September I can't get my numbers under control.
  8. I love it! The placement does invite the possibility of adding more 🐠🐟
  9. I use Tetra Easy Strips 6-in-1 to test my three gallon tank. Last Weds, I dosed my plants with Aqueon Plant Food. Thursday, I had a spike in my nitrite levels - expected however I went from 0 to danger (10.0ppm). My nitrate levels also went from 0 to stressed (80ppm) and my pH had dropped to 6.2 I dosed the pH with Imagitarium's Enhancer once and we're back to 6.8. Friday I did a water change (25%ish) and my nitrite is still holding at 10. Today I did another water change and nitrate is measuring in the safe zone around 20ppm but nitrite is still bonkers. What am I doing wrong? Miso is doing OK. His activity is the same. In fact he's busy making a bubble nest. I have a few yellow tipped frogbit leaves, and my anubias look fine. Stats: pH: 6.8 Alkalinity: 0/low. Chlorine:0. GH: 75/soft. Nitrite: 10.0. Nitrate: less than 20
  10. He does roll the dice! They are heavy enough to sink, but light enough move about. I contacted Chessex Dice to be sure they were safe for Miso. Dice were a perfect fit with the dragon head!
  11. I am very new when it comes to planted tanks. I had joined a few groups on Facebook looking for advice, however the posts were more "look at my glorious tank" as opposed to giving newbies answers to their questions. Below is a photo of my anubius plants. (The smaller one is definitely A. Nana, the other is taller & lighter in color - the package read Betta Bunk Anubius sp) Have I planted them correctly? The roots are down in the gravel substrate and the rhizome is on top of the rocks. I had three nymphaea bulbs turn out to be duds, and plan on ordering a Crinum Calamistratum to replace them. That will fill my 3 gallon Betta tank.
  12. Back in July, I took my niece to Petco to buy supplies needed for her ferrets/guinea pigs &/or lizard. I'm a dog person & didn't need to be in the small animal section so I wandered over to the aquatics. I've had a few bettas over the years and find them very attractive fish. I had no intentions on purchasing a fish tank. The Aqueon tanks were 50% off. I owned an older model Top Fin desktop aquarium already, however I have always wanted a glass tank. When I got home, I went into the garage and pulled out the acrylic tank. I began to go through my fish supplies: needed new tubing as well as new suction cups for a Whisper filter. My heater wasn't working either. The next morning, I ordered replacement parts to pickup at the store & came home with a 3 gallon rimless tank to began the cycle process. Over the next few days I began watching videos from Aquarium Co-op and Girl Talks Fish. I found myself watching videos about aquascaping and admired how beautiful the tanks looked. I had no intentions on purchasing live plants. My silk plants just didn't look right in my tank anymore. That afternoon, I was back at Petco purchasing an anubias sp. Not long after that, Miso, a tangerine koi betta joined our family.
