  1. I am so excited Matten corner filter  is setup, the back has been painted black. Now I'm testing out equipment. I's a budget build so here's what I ordered.. Hygger lights HG 957, Hygger heater HG 007, and Hygger hang on the back filter. Has anyone used water clarifier? It came with my gravel. it's been a very long time since I started up a tank. would really like to clear up the water. I do plan to do planted tank as soon as the water clears up they'll start going in.

  2. I believe patience is the key And of course not overstocking. We make mistakes when we get in a rush. So... time and self-control, not getting too many fish. If you have a filter It's more than likely enough. That being said part of the fun of fish keeping is the tinkering, try new things adjusting, and all the things we learn along the way.

So I guess the answer is yes, I'm sure we're over filtering. I do not believe the over filtering is going to hurt and it's part of the fun.

  3. Oh dear, I know all about color changes ( Goldfish are my jam) I have no problem with that. The tumor  possibility is concerning. I will follow the advice given. Yes ,I have started the salt treatment, almond leaves and every other day water treatment.  I will keep a close eye on him. I should have done some research before buying. I know better, but I fell in love. 🤦‍♀️. Thank you so much for the help!

  4. Ok, everyone the breeder just got back to me. They said"  because this betta has dragon scale gens and sometimes they grow a white scale in a few weeks it should go of no problem" I am not sure if they meant fall off? I will continue with the salt and clean water. Lazarus lives! That is what my husband insisted we name him if he showed up alive. I tracked him daily, after 4 days Chris was convinced we would have another dead fish. I will keep you updated. Thank you so much for all your help!

  5. It really depends on the betta and his individual temperament. But if you have one that I already work with shrimp, you might be in luck. I  would go with fish that didn't have the same coloring and small fins. That is if you have a backup tank in case it goes terribly wrong and he turns into Beowulf. It happened to me and that ended up being his name!

  6. I have kept pearls before they are a great fish! Did you put the pearl in with the guppies? If it did not have another active tank mate before that might be part of the problem. Losing the other two would also stress it out.  The temp. might be part of the issue.

Have you tested the water? ( sorry if I missed that)

  7. No, they have not, it is  four days before Christmas. Thank you, that is encouraging! I am happy as long as it is something I can treat. I have put salt in his tank and will do water change tomorrow and every other day after that. How long should I wait to see improvement?

Personally, if @Odd Duckgives advice to medicate I'd follow it to a T, however if I were in your shoes right now, I would salt the tank and observe the fish. ANY signs of stress, further illness or injury- or the raised scales start looking fuzzy, red or more join them, I would start using medication.

It might be helpful to tell us what you have on hand if anything?

I would keep the water comfortable, VERY clean (replacing only the salt that would have been lost in a water change, I do water changes every other day when fish are in QT, more frequently when necessary), keep the lights off and the stress low.

On  hand I have fish flex (Cephlexin ) , and amoxicillin.

Well, the poor thing. I'm not an expert, but my first guess is this little one needs some time in good water and aquarium salt. I would think it was damage from shipping. Of course if it is damage I'd want to prevent infection/bacteria- hence the salt and having a bacterial antibiotic available on standby if more aggressive treatment is needed. Then I would compose an email to the seller and while they have no control over shipping (this is the busiest shipping season- I probably wouldn't be shipping fish this time of year myself) I would ask them about a refund if I got the wrong fish but of course this little one is pretty cute I'd nurse them back to health and ask the seller if they've ever had this particular issue and what they'd recommend.

Well that's encouraging, ( I was afraid of a tumor)   I ordered my first betta in November, it arrived DOA, so this was a replacement fish. It was supposed to ship the first of December. I think they forgot. I have already started salt. How kind should I find the salt to work before starting antibiotics?

Very nice. My last tank I got is a 40b and I love it. There are so many things you can do with this size tank. With that matten filter in there, some shrimp would be a natural. I hope you keep us updated on your new project.

It's funny you should say that because I am going to try and put shrimp in. I don't know if I'll be sending them to their death with the Gourmies. It well be very heavily planted on the filter side.

  11. About  a year and a half ago my husband and I decided we were going to fix up and sell our house .It was through tears I re-homed my 75g goldfish and 38g community  tanks.  I kept my 2 5 gallon flex shrimp and betta tanks.

My husband ran into some health issues so progress is slow and I just couldn't stand it. For Christmas He got me a 40 gallon breeder tank. Yes ,I got it early. I do love new projects. I couldn't bring myself to just put one goldfish in a 40 gallon breeder. I know my limits and I know I'm going to buy another fish and it would just take off from there.  I have set up an angel fish tank Community tank before but I truly fell in love with the Pearl Gouramis that were in the tank.  At certain times of the year I get extremely busy so I've chosen to do a low tech tank with a small corner-matten filter, and a simple hang on the back for mechanical filtration.

    Brackets are in!

  12. Hello everyone,

I need a little help with my new betta .I received him in the mail yesterday , he was lost and in transit  7 days. He was packaged well but I am sure this is not the original fish I ordered. My real concern is the patch of white scales on his back they're raised up, and look like some kind of growth. Bettas' are not really my expertise. I've had a couple of them in the past however, I have never seen this. He's in the quarantine tank   I set up over a week ago with almond leaves, yes gravel and silk plants. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
