  1. My fx2 that I recently bought a month ago started losing its flow a lot out of nowhere. I could not figure out what was causing the issue so I took all the media in the filter and cleaned it throughly, took off the motor parts and cleaned it as well. Put it all back together and its still running with poor flow. There is not broken parts and nothing is clogging the input and output either, so I am kinda stumped if its something with the motor.

  2. It is crazy to me how much of a beginner I was looking back and seeing how my tank had looked. Was a 55 gallon and man the stocking was all over the place... Surprised no one on the forum had bashed on me a while back for this 😂. But again I was beginner and now I have much more info then I did before and better skills.

Now in 2024 I have more skills then I had before, still learning new things everyday, but thats what the hobby is about. My new discus tank is still pretty new I would say. A 75 gallon and started in July of 2023 and plants are still growing in but again patience is key in this hobby.

  3. From some sources I have seen sometimes nerite snails with holes in their shells can be permanent. Not all the time this happens but I guess its one of those "rare" occasions that it can happen. All you can really do is just supplement with calcium as their diet making sure you feed them other things as well.

so anyone who is a member of the aquarium coop youtube channel (if you arent, you should be!) knows about the most recent talk (im not going to go to indepth, you gotta be a member to find out what happened 😉 ) but basically false tiger knifefish were mentioned as being a good community fish, and with me losing over half my fish to diesies, an interesting opportunity has opened up. Would a false tiger knife work in my 40b with 2 bolivians and some endlers, corys, tetras, and clown pleco?

No it will not work, since these fish can easily max out at 12-16 inches and need minimum at least 55 gallon and bigger, and would easily munch down on some of your tetras and endlers.

I’ve mentioned recently I’m going to be setting up my first brackish tanks soon. For my slightly salty friends out there what is your brackish gravity preference/recommendation? From what I’ve read there can be a pretty big divide between things that can go low end and high end brackish. My only stipulation is that it will be a 90g tank with a Gymnothorax Polyuranodon.

A moray eel salinity should be around 1.008 to 1.012. Some websites also state that it can be up to full marine as well.

I would use a 40 gallon breeder, and plan to move them to a 75 gallon or larger as they grow.

Thank you for the feedback! Also, I was wondering what stand you use for the two 75-gallon that I have seen in some of the co op videos?

I did 10 right in the 75 they are currently in.  But could see advantages to a smaller tank.  So I agree with Dean, who also has infinitely more experience than me!

Bare bottom, good food, pound them with clean water.  My biggest suggestion would be to fully commit to the grow out.  Daily, large water changes.  You can get lazier with them in about a year when they're more fully grown.  Nothing is more sad than stunted, weirdly shaped discus.  If you're going to do it... Do it.

If you don't want do the work, buy a group of adult ones where someone else has done the work.

    Good luck!

I am already used to doing lots of wc esp with the ram and angelfish fry I have raising up right now... 6 90% wc and 10 feedings a day... Tiring but all worth it!

  7. Hey guys so I was planning to start a discus tank again after selling my old ones off months ago and missing them. So I was thinking of doing either a 75 or a 100 based on the space I have, and I wanted to have it planted as well. But I am conflicted on what color I want the discus to be. I was either choosing 8 red melon discus, or 8 blue diamond discus, or doing 4 blue and 4 red. What do you guys think?

Just planted this maybe 3 weeks ago. Used easy green and root tabs. I have soft water so I used equilibrium and I’ve also been using excel every other day. I also just replaced my old light with aquarium co ops light. 55 gallon. 9 hour total light 4 morning 5 evening. Set at 80 percent intensity. I’ve only been using that excel for a few weeks now and notice a bit more  algae. 2 questions. The sword looking normal? And is it the light or excel casing the algae?

I didn’t use the equilibrium after the most recent water change. I was going to try these wonder shells instead fyi.

The swords look okay, some leaves that are dying off could be because of being introduced into a new environment, and that some of the leaves still look emersed. Second algae are going to form no matter how much lighting you put or fertilizer, what you can do is if algae is still an issue dial back on the light timer and use less fert and see if that has any changes.

I already plan on keeping them around 84 though even Cory said that Hillstream Loaches do well at higher temperatures. And, yes, I plan on installing a wave maker to keep the surface active. I also want to have a fluidized bed in my sump which will have lots of air moving the K1 as well. For cardinal tetras this is where they come from...the Rio Negro in the same waters that discus are living in.

By placing the dither fish along with a minimum of 10 discus, I expect the discus to do quite well in a 180 gallon tank. I also plan on at least 2 changes per week to keep the hormones down in the water. But if I can find Hillstream Loaches here they will be bred in water here which is about an hour away from the Rio Negra.

Not at all cases, the highest temp a hillstream loach can go to thrive in is 79-80, and in the hobby its not to keep fish but we want them to also be thriving, and at 84 a hillstream loach will live a short but it won't thrive. I understand cory has his opinion but its also good to hear other people who have kept hillstream loach and see if it worked with them or not, not saying his opinion is invalid but its to get a bigger picture.

  10. I'm going to be keeping discus again soon, but for my experience make sure to keep your discus hot! Not extremely hot but 82-86 with 84 being the sweet spot. Unfortunately, hillstream loach and discus will not work as the water needed for each is different, however a good replacement would be sterbai corydoras, or a bn pleco. Remember to keep the water very oxygenated with aeration! Tetras can be a bit challenging with discus, I kept rummy nose and cardinal tetras with my discus at one point, but do know that you will have to grow them up and replace them often as high heat tends to reduce their life span. Also with discus, if you are getting them young less then 4 inches, it's highly recommended to have a separate grow-out tank and grow them at least 4 inches or bigger and then introduce them into main tank as small discus tend to grow the fastest so wc and good food is highly recommended! Good luck!

Can you suggest a good place from which to order duckweed?  or another similar floating plant that will help filter water?  Water sprite keeps dying.

We have many AC plants.  I just need something to help filter nitrites out quarantine tanks.  I don't want to put our healthy AC plants into the quarantine tanks.  Thank you!

If your having issues with nitries in a qt just do wc, there really is no reason to add plants as qt meds can harm plants.

  12. In my case I found that mollies eat duckweed, I read some articles about it as well and some fish that are omnivores will eat duckweed when they have chance. Common fish that will eat duckweed are carp or goldfish but those aren't really community fish.

I'm wondering if anyone has had consistent success with keeping Shrimp and Bettas together. We have two Bettas, a female who shares a 20 long with Golden Minnows, and a male who shares a 10 gallon with 4 Pigmy Corydoras. We had a couple shrimp in the 10, but I haven't seen them in weeks. I have not tried adding any to the 20 long. We have another 10 gallon with Nano fish and Shrimp. The 10 Cherry Shrimp we've had there are now about 25-30 shrimp, and I'm wondering where we can move some. Not sure what I can do if the Bettas become aggressive towards them.

Any fish will eat a shrimp that fits in its mouth, the only "safe shrimp" fish is otocinclus. As long as you can keep cover some shrimp will live while some might get eaten.

Getty ready to reset a my 5G Betta Tank. Since moving here, I switched to Seachem Equilibrium, Acid Buffer, and Alkaline Buffer. My betta died today, so I went into the local pet store I went to the local pet store (independent) and asked what they did for their bettas. They told me they use a 1/2 and 1/2 mix of Tap and RO water. I went home and tried that. The PH came in at 9.2, the KH at 1.5 to 2 degrees and the GH at 3 degrees (I double checked the tests because of the odd numbers). Should I follow the local pet stores advice or keep mixing. And if I should keep mixing, should I stick with the Seachem stuff or switch to something else?

I do not use seachem, I just mix the ro water with tap water to get the right tds for my tanks.

My Amazon swords are melting and have holes in them  see photo. I have a new 40 gallon breeder tank 6 weeks old  with a 1200 lumen planted tank 6500k led fixture now running 12 hours and everything is doing fine but my swords.  Tank has 18 brilliant rasboras, 6 nerite snails and 2 clown plecos, java ferns, water sprites with no co2. I dose the tank with easy green 2x weekly and supplement the aquasoil with root tabs. Nitrates are  below 5, ph 6.6, gh 6, kh 3. I  do see new growth that looks fine so they may just be adjusting to being submerged.  Thank you.  20230401_200549.jpg.78fba235c925e5e3fb59b19924f29bd5.jpg20230412_175229.jpg.4f7ced42a1469ee9cfcb589d71177c15.jpg

It rather looks like your plecos have been eating your swords. Plecos are known to eat Amazon swords thats why people usually do not keep these two together.

Hey! Currently only a pilot in the recreational sUAS (drone) flying context, but studying for the Part 107 exam, and a private pilot's license when I become eligible (as I'm only 15 right now). If I may ask, are you going for a job at the airlines?

(Also love the Cessna(?) on your profile banner!)

Very cool! No not yet, I am currently working on my instrument rating and working my way up to cfi. I currently am building up my hours for commercial license as I have around 70  hours of flying.

    Thank you! I flew the 172s/n and182.

I've had my angelfish for almost 3 years now in a 55g with guppies, 6 congo tetras, and an SAE. My angel never attacks anything in the tank and nothing attacks her but yesterday I noticed the guppies started pecking her non stop.
She doesn't act or look sick at all (though it's a little hard to tell bc she's mostly white to begin with). I panicked and she's been in a 10g (with fresh aquarium salt and stress coat) just to get her away from the pecking.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on and what I can do to stop this??

Guppies usually start pecking to assert dominance or curious. I recommend taking the guppies out since either way guppies and angels live in totally different water parameters.

  18. Hey guys, I was just curious to see if anyone here is a pilot or has been one, it is really interesting to meet people who have the same hobbies. Just got my private pilot license and working my way up at 17yo!  😄

I have heard about problem once, and a friend's angels killed her rams for some reason. But other than that, I have never heard of problems either really. My angels are juveniles rn, and rams only seem to care about each other. Good side is, rams enjoy lower side and angels like higher side of the tank. I believe cichlids care about the other cichlids in their size more, or if they share the same level and territory in the tank.

I'm happy to hear you had no issues at all! I wanted to try them with backup plans, which I hope I will never need to use 🙂

Angels are mostly middle to the top, they do occasionally go down but that's usually during feeding. Keeping it densely planted with lots of covers helps a lot. At the end of the day, it's also based on the fish's personality.
