  1. Morning,

    Hope everyone is well.

I’ve got approx 30 fry at the moment in the tank with their parents that are roughly just under 1cm in size.

When should I pull them into their own grow out tank?

    Best way to do it?

Should you split male and females once it becomes apparent being in the same line?

Given the complete opposite in expected behavior one would almost think you have confused your baenschi with the cockatoo.

Just to throw more fuel to this fire my Baenschi have bred a couple times and moves from different tanks and are not aggressive towards each other at all. Left the fry in with them until they were 1/2 an inch or so and no issues. The male just kept a wide berth when the female was out with the fry.

  3. My LFS is about 30mins away. Nice store and has a good range of tanks and stands.

Food is good they stock NLS, Ocean Free, Tropical and Hikari so can't go wrong with either choice.

Hardware is limited and usually cheaper brands but don't blame them  their products get the job done and it probably has a low turnover.

The main focus of the fish are African and large American cichlids but they keep your stock standard community fish also.

My favorite are the Bolivian Rams. I really like their peaceful disposition, they are really colorful in their own way, and they don't hide when you walk up to the aquarium. Mine actually takes food out of my hand.

Yeah that's the one downside to my pair at the moment they are still a bit timid when people approach the tank. They duck into their caves until they muster up the confidence.🤣

I've always been partial to rams - specifically colour morph gold rams. Some of the apisto are nice though I have a dislike for cockatoo but gold rams are my pick. The thing is that there are 100's if not 1000's of dwarf cichlid and my experience is some what limited. So many species i don't really know much about... and some of the less common apisto like woof are well ... eye catching. Another dwarf cichlid i have experience with that i like a lot are nijjensi. Nijjensj are very nice indeed and a loyal pair they make.

The Gold and german strains are pretty. Not so much a fan of the dark knight rams personally. Its cool there's a new morph but doesn't quite hit it for me.

Baenschi are apart of that Nijsenni group and I agree my pair have no issues at all.

  6. Hello fishy friends!

I think the dwarf cichlid group holds some of the most captivating fish!

One of my absolute favourites hands down is the Apistogramma Baenschi. The large spikey dorsal fins almost make them look like little fish punks and to top off with a bright blue sheen body and orange accents to their fins they really draw the eye.

I'm interested what are your favourite cichlids or a must to keep one day? 🙂

  7. Hi there,

My 40 gallon holds a pair of Apistos and 10x Cochu Blue Tetras.

Wanting advice if anyone can foresee any issues with adding Ember tetras with the Cochu?

Its a planted tank but the front section is open and the back wall is lined with Blue Stricta and on the sides is a large Amazon Sword leaving the middle/front in open swimming but the Cochu constantly duck in and out of the Stricta.

    Is my plan a go?

  8. Hope everyone is doing well.

My Apistogramma Baenschi have fry that are now free swimmers and feasting on baby brine shrimp and micro-organisms. They are currently housed with the parents in a 3ft but I have a 2ft ready to grow them out. My question is when should I?

They are just under 1cm in size and are starting to swim up from the bottom of the tank and exploring away from the female parent.

  9. Hi Paul,

I have a pair of Baenschi and Borellii's and a couple mystery wild types.
Pretty easy to care for just provide lots of cover either plants or hardscape and find some nice caves.
I use coconut caves which has worked well for me and have had success with females laying eggs in there.
