I agree with @a tired fish keeper, cut back on the light level or photoperiod and try to scrub or siphon out as much as possible. It a common problem and luckily it usually goes away as the tank ages.  I would normally add Amano shrimp and Otocinclus but it’s a pretty small tank. I have a couple of those three gallon cubes and only keep very small fish in one and only plants in the other.

Ok will do! Thanks for you help

Perfect, that will help tremendously. Keep a very close eye on further visible and behavioral changes on your betta girl.

Ok will do. Thank for help.

Ah ok I would have guess you put her in a bigger tank which would change the temperature if the same heater was used.

Oh. Ok I just put in my old sponge filter  in

@Plant-master I think what some of our fish co-horts are trying to say is that we're concerned the tank isn't properly cycled. Betta fish are exremely finicky. Old water doesn't have the good bacteria in it- the surfaces, substrate, plants, decorations and filter from her old tank would have these things. If you have any of that immediately put some in to help cycle the tank.

Some would poo-poo this idea but things like Seachem's Stability has helped me get tanks through the new period even with cycled material.

I would also raise the temperature to 80. Have you taken the temp from an independent thermometer? I've also learned betta's need high humidity. If you have a loose lid on this tank I would put a piece of plastic wrap over the top to keep some humidity in. What size was her old tank?

    It was a 6 gal, now it’s a 3 gal

Doesn't look like dropsy to me, but I am concerned about the tank's cycle. If you didn't put cycled filter media or a cycled sponge into the tank, your tank is not cycled, and you need to check parameters daily and do partial water changes at least every other day (daily, if needed). Right now I'd wait-and-see and judge it as stress, and bump up the frequency of your water changes.

Actually I have been doing water changes or every day For the past week. But I will continue

Could be stress. Anyone else in the tank? How hard is the water? Generally they like soft water. Ph could be lower but it’s prob fine

There is no one else in the tank, and I currently don’t have anything Test GH

  6. Hi, my Betta has been acting weird the past two days. Laying around a lot but still coming to the surface for air. Still eating fine but being very lethargic. The water parameters are 7.0 PH, 0 nitrates, 0 nitrite , 0 ammonia and the tank is 78 degrees. What should I do??

That looks like diatoms (brown algae).

I had one of my tanks covered in it, my issue was not a new tank issue but I have read that most tanks will go through this process.

If it gets out of hand its really hard to get rid of and you really have to work at it, and yes it will spread really fast.

The co2 won't help out with this but your plants will explode after you get rid of the diatoms

When I had the issue I checked everything, thought it was my water but ended up being thousands of dead mosquito larvae that were decomposing under the substrate.

What I did was to hook up a hob filter with a sponge and lots of filter floss inside.  I think took a big fish net, like the large one from ACO and put that in the tank and stirred up the substrate.  The net would catch quite a bit and the hob would catch particles and clogged up fairly quick.  You can usually get diatoms off plants without uprooting them, let it flow in the water column and use something to manually remove it.  In my case, I split the tank up into six sections and gravel vacd one section every third day.  Eventually I got all the dead larvae out got most of the diatoms out and haven't had a problem since.

This is what mine looked like when I had the outbreak

Thanks, do you think 50 percent changes every day will help?

Hi, I’m new to the forum and was having some trouble with algae in some new aquascapes. These tank have new plants in them and More to come but I am still working on the balancing process of these aquascapes, my dwarf hairgrass tank Has grown some thick algae on the top within like seven hours. I just gotten back from school and looked at my tank and all the algae had just grown. Since these are new tanks I’m assuming they have a lot of micro nutrients which is causing the algae to grow. I was thinking maybe the pressurized C02would have the plants out complete the algae. Is there a way I can keep this algae At bay and have a lush carpet? Also my Beta cube tank has some brown algae growing on the Bacopa.

Nitrates both nitrate were 0 ppm

Very nice Co2 set up!  Love the red tank too… 😊

I wouldn’t know where to begin looking, nor refill my tank when it’s empty.  I was looking at the reaction systems with citric acid and soda….they were not too expensive and available mail order.  I know you need to get your tank hydro tested every few years for Saftey.

Normally you don’t refill a tank you trade, this tank is fairly new and I take it to a place called “Airgas” to trade it out. Pressurized co2 is the best but I have never tried citric acid, maybe I should give it a go. You can do it home made with like some plastic bottles or I would recommend the Aquario NEO CO2 - DIY CO2 Kit. Never used it but looks good.

    Looks nice so far.

what Co2 system are you using.  I’m looking for one myself before I start planting my 55g

I am using a pressurized CO2 system with a 5 pound CO2 tank. Also I bought a double bubble counter regulator so I can split the CO2 into the two cube tanks. Your way  better off buying every thing separately then to get a kit.

I love those Hiro lights with the wood base. I’ve been thinking about getting one of those for my little Wabi Kusa cube.
Your scapes look great. I’d  want more plants for the cubes, but I always want more plants!

Thanks, I have just orders some S reopens for that’s tank and it’s coming tomorrow.

I love those aquascapes! The balanced log one is especially cool to me. Keep up the good work!

Thank you, I was having trouble keeping dust and debris of the plants from the fluval stratum. Glade you like them!!
