  1. He is alert and eager to see me. Eats readily. Which is complete turn around from when I discovered he was really sick. Can it progress to body rot even though he has dramatically improved?

  2. I am a horrible fish Mommy. I did not pay attention to my Betta until I figured out he had fin rot and by then it was too late and this is what has happened to him. I completely cleaned his tank he's swimming around now he's happy he's alert he's eating again. I feel bad enough I know it's my fault but will he grow his fins back I read on the internet that if the fins get close to the body they won't grow back and as you can see his fins are close to the body I don't know what's up with this top and bottom fan they don't look right either. Anybody know if they'll grow back is there something I'm supposed to be doing that I haven't done already

  3. How many wafers? How often? I put 10 otocinculus in this 10 gallon planted ( now dying and dead plants). Since day 2 I have never seen more than 3 at a time. So how many and often do I feed these wafers? ( they share tank with 1 betta)

  4. Anyone willing to look on Amazon for correct grow light for a dumb newbie? I'm lost trying to pick correct light to purchase. I have 10 gallon with lid ( do I need with Betta?) low light plants (would like  medium also later). 1 betta.

I'm looking for low cost due to my being so new to plants.

I just don't know which to pick.

Anyone willing to give me complete name of one that will work from Amazon?

You’re measuring .25 ppm ammonia, are you measuring any nitrates?
I do fairly infrequent water changes but definitely do a change if I have measurable amounts of ammonia or nitrite.

    @patrick_g

    My Nitates are zero

    Nitates 20ppm

  6. I'm new at this so I don't want to stress out My Betta. I have been putting the tip of a paint brush (canvas brush wood end) in the top of the water for him to chase then I drop a pellet as I pull out the wooden tip. I do this for 3 pellets in the morning. At noon I do 2 pellets and just before lights out I do 3 pellets.

Is it stressful to make him chase for his food?

    Does it help?

Is it ok to split his meal into 3 times a day instead of 1?

If everything else has been staying stable, I [personally] would not do any large water changes. Especially if your fish and snails are not showing signs of stress. Even healthy, positive changes can be stressful.

It sounds like you started out overdoing the Easy Green, and now you have adjusted the dosing. Before you risk overstressing fish or snails, examine your tank.

Are any root tabs working their way out of the substrate?

Is the fish showing rapid respiration?

    Is there algae growing?

What are the parameters of your tap water?

If you want to read a little reassuring evidence on high nitrates and fish health, I would check out  https://aquariumscience.org/index.php/5-ammonia-nitrite-nitrate-and-chlorine/ for science backed information on the risks.

I have a turtle pond that develops obscenely high nitrates, but never has even a trace of ammonia or nitrites. Frogbit and duckweed do a great job at lowering the nitrates... until the turtle, Karma, goes on a salad binge.

The endlers and snails are used to the nitrate spikes, however a large water change will disrupt the beneficial bacteria and the fish do not react well to large water changes.

So if Karma goes on a binge, I know that the nitrates will rapidly increase due to the beneficial bacteria breaking down turtle waste. I can slow it down by doing regular, twice daily small water changes... or by covering the surface with water plants from other tanks.

Neither of these solutions is overly stressful for the endlers, and which one I choose depends on what is easiest for me.

Yes everything else seems stable. If one know if it's normal but my Betts has begun hanging out near the bottom and behind plants. He comes out right away when I come to his tank though. ( waiting on a floating log delivery in case that's why) I don't see any root tabs poking out. My Tap water Nitrates are between 10 and 20. No algae, Fish is perky when he comes to greet me. Some of my plants are melting some have yellow leaves. But I expected that as they are all new. Here is a pic of my tank. It is 10 gallon. I have 11 root tabs on it. Could it be to many?

Ouch. Do you fertilize with just the Easy Green or do you have root tabs too? Others might say it's ok but if I were in your shoes I'd stop fertilizing just for now (it adds nitrates to your water) and do a big water change. Monitor until your cycle is back under control, THEN start fertilizing again.

I don't use fertilizers- and my plants do fine. 🙂 So they'll be ok for a little bit. IMO

Yes I do have root tabs in, about 8-9 for 9 plants. I'll stop the easy green for awhile. Most of the plants are root feeders. Only a few are water feeders. Thank you. Maybe I put too many root tabs in. Yikes

I would lay off the easy green for awhile, while subsequently doing daily water changes of around 25-30% until it gets to around 20-40ppm. Then monitor, and see how much water you need to change weekly/bi-weekly/monthly to maintain that.

While that nitrate level is high, don't panic. I recently started tanking care of a workplace tank that was neglected for years. The Nitrates were around 500ppm, and a single fish was "living" it it for at least 7-8 years. I slowly brought it down with daily small water changes. It took 2 weeks to get it under control from that level, and now it it very easy to maintain. The behavior, appetite, and color of the fish improved quite noticeably as well.

Thank you. I feel better now. I will follow your advice.

  10. I can't seem to get these under control. I have 10 gallon planted with 1 fish and 2 snails. I do water changes 1/5th once a week. I use Prime water conditioner and Easy Green. ( I was doing 2 squirts then last week I found out I had a 10 gallon and only did 1 squirt) I stupidly changed the filter set up a couple weeks ago. And subsequently learned I restarted the cycling. Why are my Nitates so high. How do I fix this.

    PH. 7.6

    PH High 7.4

    Ammonia 0

    Nitrites 0

    Nitrates 160ppm

  11. Crisis averted folks. Candi at Aquarium Co-op let me know cargo gets cold in flight so it will be ok. I should have known that. In my mind these are my little babies. How cool is that, on a Sunday night the company answered my frantic email right away to calm my fears. That's awesome customer service.

  12. Help, I found my order of plants had been left on my snowy cement porch Saturday (I assume). Found them this evening (Sunday) by accident. Post office tracking shows they will be delivered tomorrow. I've been checking couple times a day watching for them. I opened the box. The plants are very very cold. Like the grocery store cold case foods. What do I do? Heat packs are not putting out any heat. Right now they are still sealed in their packages and laying on the carpet Infront of baseboards heater. Do I warm them to room temp and drop them in tank? Drop them in even cold? Plants them as soon as possible? Help, what are their chances to survive the cold?

Nope. Just turn down the lights and put on some romantic music for them. They could be like that for a while.

I only have a 20 gallon, a few plants, 1 fish and 3 snails. If they have babies will it be too many for my setup to handle?

  14. Sorry it has been a while. I got sick. But I took a reading today and now it says my ammonia level is still Dangerous. I've done a 50 percent water change yesterday when I added driftwood. That I had prepared. The only thing in this tank is 3 brand new plants, 1 Betta and 3 snails. I'm probably not overfeeding because I see his swim bladder so apparently I'm starving him. LoL. I'm starting to wonder if the test strips are bad outta the box. Or is there something else it could be? Also my Alkility has dropped from the highest on the strip sheet to zero. All I did was add the driftwood yesterday. I am in Spokane with Hard water.

Here are pictures. See my Alkility and Gh both show numbers in the hundreds but everywhere I look it is supposed to read in single to double digits. So I don't know if these are good or bad. When the color matched that 200-300+ box. Let me know if these aren't the pics you meant. The ammonia reading has me baffled as well.

These pics are not what you meant huh. I see that now. By the way my tank is 20 gallon with whisper iq filter.

  15. #1 My Test strip says KH 0,40,160, 200 and on. But each place I look for ideal show single digit number as examples 5,6, etc. So my question is for ideal at 53.6-89.4 what would mine read?

#2 what is ideal Chlorine? My Test strip has it on there. (Dip&Go)

#3 my Jungle brand Ammonia test strip shows harmful levels even after a 50% water change. I have 20gallons, 1 Betta and 2 plants. Regular water changes. (10% weekly)
