Standard 55 gallon. Pretty heavily planted.IMG_0671.jpeg.303d39c8d855016efb3386089c77ab0a.jpeg

Now seeing your tank (which is nice btw!) this give a lot of insight.....Aside from the Ludwigia I pretty much see a ton of heavy root feeders I would be investing more in possibly root tabs than dosing a ton of Easy Green TBH. I also wonder what your light schedule is also because from the algae I see it looks like you have a ton of light going this would also be feeding into the low nitrates meaning the longer the photo period the more nutrients taken up. I would look at the lighting and possibly doing less/smaller water changes to get your water more nutrient rich.

Yeah, @Sleepy, I'm thinking that Easy Green and occasionally Leaf Zone will be more effective than Flourish.

I hooked the lights up to a smart plug this past weekend and have the lights set right now for 6 am to 4 pm. I'll probably back it up to 8 or 9 am.

As far as testing goes, I have simple test strips from Walmart right now that may not be very effective. They showed 20 nitrates, 0 nitrites, 25GH, 80 KH, and about 7.0 pH. I've been using distilled for water changes but switched back to tap water on Saturday, so I'm hoping my well water will supply some needed minerals.

Sounds like a good plan to me! Just as a side suggestion also though I wouldn't flip flop too much on the water I would stick with tap or mixing because that will cause the plant to melt also trying to always adjust to the different parameters.

I have a 9 gallon Fluval Flex cycled tank with a female betta and two nerite snails. There has been one anubias in there attached to the mug and the water parameters are 0 for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates - it's been like that for a long time which I think was fine for just the one plant. I do a 50% water change once/week.

I added new anubias, java fern and the moss ball just a few days ago. How much fertilizer should I dose and how often? (if any) How long should I have the lights on?

I have the plants temporarily tied down to a piece of driftwood. The driftwood was causing excessive tannins so I'm not sure if I'm going to keep it. I added the activated carbon back in, so seeing if that will work. I did boil it twice so we'll see what happens this time around.

There also seems like there is some sort of brown something on the existing anubias. Is that algae or could it have been from the driftwood that was in there before somehow.

    Thank you!!

I would first say if you have those parameters and only the one Betta causing a load really you could go much further out on your water changes and this would allow for more nutrients for your plants especially now that you've added more. I wouldn't keep the lights on more than 8 hours and dose 1 pump easy green per week to start.

  4. If you are using ICH-X (which is great btw) I actually recommend not raising the temperature as this makes stress on the fish and possible bacterial infections more likely a long with what they are already dealing with. I stopped using heat and just dosing what is recommended and had much better results.

Now is the time to prove to myself that I have good self control 😂

I just think about the pros of having my tanks and not adding another. Less RODI water needed, less money will be spent, not breaking my back carrying buckets, and not stressing out on where to place my tanks LMAO

Trust me I'm with you I'm struggling too I have like 5 empty tanks as it is so why am I thinking about buying more!!!!!🤣

Plus an extra 15% if I by online and pickup in store. I checked and it comes out to $93.06 with tax

If I buy this then I'd have to buy another light, more rocks and driftwood, more fish 😎 and more substrate. I'll most likely wait til summer but it's really tempting lol.

I guess I'll rescape the tanks I have now so I can feel like I have a new tank 🤣

This is exactly how they get you 🤣

Has anyone tried to get an extra 15% off by ordering online and pickup instore?  Is that discount applicable on top of the 50% off?  I may go get a 2.5g for qt purposes.

    Yep this works

This is actually a pretty great example of why TDS meters can be spectacularly unhelpful at times. They only tell us that there's stuff in the water - not what kind of stuff, and if it's harmful. Just how much.

May be a bit of an unpopular opinion in some circles, but I'm pretty well convinced that most fish and even inverts don't care too much what PH, KH, and GH they're kept at - as long as the number isn't an extreme and is relatively stable. The vast majority of freshwater fish will do just fine at 7.0 PH IME. I'd also wager that most would do fine at 6.5, and most would do well at 8.0. The key is stability. There are obvious examples of fish that may prefer softer, acidic water or harder, alkaline water, but I've seen people keep a huge variety of fish in parameters that are way off of what they live in in the wild with no obvious adverse effects.

TL;DR - TDS meters give us food for thought, but IMO and IME they're pretty much a niche tool and the info it gives us should probably be taken with a hefty portion of ACO aquarium salt.

This. I believe the only other time it really matters is for breeding.

. Also, @Sleepyby capping you mean topping it with something other than the active media? In this tank I put the Fluval Stratum in media bags under sand and small pebbles. Not sure if that counts lol.

Ahhhhh ok I might have missed that part 🙂 but whats weird is I did it the same way in media bags capped with gravel and really didnt do anything to my PH

Does anybody have any advice for finding Amano shrimp? I only need 3 or so to put in my 15 gallon. None of my local stores seem to have them and online ordering is obviously expensive with shipping plus you have to buy a minimum of 5 at most of the reliable places ive seen. Nothing on aquabid either. Any advice on hunting 2 or 3 of these guys down?

Did you try asking your shop to order some?

So, my aquarium lighting has two light tubes. If I were to take one out, would I then double the amount of time I left the one on? Or is there like a lighting curve. Would my plants still be ok.

Can duration make up for intensity I guess is the basic question.

Even if it were it would still throw things out of balance because certain plants would still be getting that much more light if you have a heavily planted tank it probably wouldnt be an issue assuming you are testing your water.

  12. The suggestion of floating plants would be a good one depending on the flow of the tank unfortunately Anubis is a very slow growing plant and where you have it really close to the light so the only real way to combat it would be to get some shade or move it altogether lower in the tank anything else is probably just going to be a temporary fix.

Plants went in day 3, 2 years ago. Zero sunlight enters this room. Also why is this crypt doing "OK- not great" 12in from the dying Sword? Will add more plants, tired of buying them and watching them die. water wisteria dead, java moss dead, Crinum dead, lucky bamboo dead.....

    20230217_171221.jpg

The sword needs way more nutrients that the crypt you want to target feed it more root tabs. You’re getting algae from too much something so in my opinion you don’t have have enough plants growing to warrant that much co2 and 12 hours of light dial it back and add more plants.

  14. How long has the tank been setup with the plants? One very strange thing about your parameters is having such hard water with such a low PH not sure what to make of that. Also like you have already stated this needs more plants especially if you are injecting Co2 and 12 hours of light plus it kind of looks like this tank is getting sunlight also I would change all of those things just based on your pics.

edit: Actually just figured out why your PH would be that because of the Co2 silly me lol

I have been storing 2 large lava rocks for a quite awhile. They are of similar size, gray, shaped like a 7"x 15"x4" cough drop, and boring.

So the primary question is one of best use. I am not opposed to having one or two monolithic rocks, but risk symmetry problems. If I brake them, I risk no longer having large rocks and having smaller uglier pieces. So:

    • How do I give them character, and look like nature did it?
    • How would you use them?

Why not chip one down to accent the other big one?
