  1. I saw the baby plecos they sell in my LFS. They are tiny, about 3-5 cm. I don't know how long it will take them to grow to that size. I'm pretty sure that plecos (commons especially) are in high demand in my LFS, so I don't think they will be too hard to get rid off
  2. I don't know if you heard about using cold water to trigger the fish to spawn. I feed veggies and bloodworms right before and 2 days later I saw the male and the female in the cave. The first spawn was about a month ago, even less I think. I'm glad to her that they grow up quickly.
  3. I have a male bristelnose pleco on eggs. This is his second batch ever. I'm pretty sure he ate the first one because the appisotgramma found the eggs. They both died (the appistos from the store are very poor quality, I was talking on an employee in my LFS and he complained about the supplier.) Now I'm debating, if I should leave the eggs in the cave, let the dad take care of them until they are wigglers/free swimming and then raise them up myself. I'm really excite to breed this fish I want to do it for a long time but never had an old enough pair. I know that by removing the eggs now there is a major risk of fungus developing on them. I don't have an egg bubbler and believe that letting the dad take care of them is the best option, even tho they are in a community tank. How long do these fish take to grow. I would keep them in a 60l tank, feed them 3-4 times a day and do a 70% water change 2-3 times a week.
  4. It seems like you understand my situation. They are taking forever to mature and are more of a chore at this point. This doesn't mean I don't want to breed fish at all.
  5. Yep that was me. I have about 40 blue gouramis (Trichopodus trichopterus ). They are taking forever to grow that's why I'm not eager to breed betta fish.
  6. Yes it's mostly on Anubius. I'm feeding my fish Sera bug bites. I try not to overfeed but it might be it
  7. Thank you for your detailed explanation. I'm currently growing out a batch of blue gourmais and they are taking ages to grow (they hatched last January and are still growing) There is about 40 of them in a 60l tank and they get fed 3 times a day, mostly frozen food and live baby brine. I do water changes 2-3 times a week. I don't know why they take so long to grow I'm assuming it's the type of fish. I read that they are grown using a lot of hormones in fish farms which makes sense. I would love to breed bettas one day but there are a couple of things holding me back: 1. In the place I live in there is only one major fish store that sells fish. I both my betta from there and already saw a possible female for him. The store doesn't carry more them 20 betta fish at the time and they recycle them every month or so. Which means that if I do bred betta fish I will have one store which may take 1-4 bettas now and again and I know they produce over a hundred babies. 2. The betta fish I have has nice colours (completely red) but the it's an average cheap betta (about 16$), so I'm guessing the demand might not be super high (idk to be honest). 3. The space for the grow out. I currently have the baby gouramis growing out in a plastic tub with a heater filter and plants. I would need to but more equipment just to house the fish and then to raise the fry, which may not be profitable at all. 4. I have a fear that the fish will grow equally as slowly as baby gouramis and I'm moving in less than a year. And I won't be able to take all the babies with me. In truth I would love to breed betta fish in the future if the resources and the network allow it. But I fear I'm not able to that at the moment. This doesn't mean that I want to give up on breeding fish, I have a breeding pair of bristelnose plecos which have had one spawn (I didn't take it out in time and the wigglers were eaten) I hope I will get another chance again soon. I'm doing the same things I did last time. I also have a pair of angles (which I'm pretty sure I sexed correctly) that I would like the breed but there is no progress (I will make another tread about it soon). Thanks again for the information it was really helpful
  8. I added a heater a few days ago. The tank is set at 27°C. The betta flares a lot less now but he keeps building his bubble nests. I'm assuming he is doing it because he likes the tank and is happy and healthy. I was considering getting a female betta and try and breed them (I would keep the female in a different tank) but that was more of a fun idea. He is a very active betta and seems to be interested in everything. I was considering adding some tank mates but I'm not sure yet.
  9. could be anibus is in direct light, the other anubius plant isn't grows much more slowly but no algae.
  10. about 6 hours a day, one hour in the morning and 5 in the after noon. The tank is well planted so I want to make sure all the plants are thriving. Should I decrease the light then? will that solve it?
  11. Hello everyone I had a black beard algae problem a couple of weeks ago which I solved by using hydrogen peroxide. Unfortunately, they keep comng back and I don't know why. Could it be the nutrient imbalance? CO2 problem? I don't use a CO2 system just an air stone. Is it because of low flow, I only have an internal filter and it doesn't create a lot of flow. Any advice is appreciated
  12. Yea that's why I'm considering it. He did start making a bubble nest today tho
  13. I assumed that the temperature might be too low for the betta. He is flaring quit a lot and is moving around often. I didn't know what to make of it. I think he is either flaring at his own reflection, there aren't any other fish in there with him. The babies and the heater are in another thank in another room. I hoping to sell the babies soon, and put the heater in the betta tank. I was told bettas are fine at 24° 25° mark, so thats about 75-77°F. I would prefer to wait until I get rid of the babies (depending on when the fish store can take them in) rather then buying a new filter right now (which I would if necessary). So should I add a heater or is his flaring unrelated to the temperature. I have kept a betta in the same tank without a heater alive for about 3 years, so I assumed that it would work. There were other fish in there with him, and I was told they were females. They looked like females but were completely brown/cream coloured. This was back when I was 11 years old (6 years ago I'm 17) and I had colourful gravel and fake plants (i know horrible choices but it was an impulse purchase). Now I doubt they were bettas at all because there wasn't any sign of aggression on the male or on them and no breeding whats so ever.
  14. Hello everyone I recently got a new betta fish to go into my 3 gallon non filter non heater planted tank. I have had him for a few days now, and he seems very comfortable. He is swimming around a lot, and he is flaring (idk to who). I always thought that betta's flaring is either a sign of breeding behaviour or that they are just happy and healthy, but mostly breeding or territorial purposes. Is him flaring normal and does that mean he is happy in the new environment. The reason why I'm asking if that's normal is because the water temperature in the tank is about 20°C. Idk what that is in Fahrenheit. I know that betta fish prefer to be at around 25-27°C, but this one seems to be very happy and active at this temperature. In the future I could add a heater but currently I'm using it for a grow out tank, once the babies are out of the tank. I would prefer not to, but only if the fish can thrive which I think he is. Any comments or concerns are appreciated
  15. I bred a pair of blue gouramis about a year ago. Ik its not the same but you might find some of this useful. The fish bred on their own in my 180l community tank. The male chose a corner and kept the fish out of it. I had some floating plants around the area. Once I noticed the eggs I took the bubble nest out and put it into a separate container. Where the fry hatched and I fed them egg yolk for the first week, then switched to micro worms and brine shrimp. I didn't realised how long these fish take to grow out. I still have most of them in the tank about 10 months later. They get frequent water changes and are feed 3-4 times a day but they still take forever to grow out. So just be prepared that the fry might take longer to grow out. I didn't realise that until it was way too late. The pair spawned the second time, but it was a much smaller spawn. I also took the eggs out but less of them survived because I put them in the same tank as their older siblings. I didn't do anything special when trying to breed the fish, in fact I wasn't even expecting it. I fed them frozen blood worms and high quality flake about 2-3 times a day (smaller feeds) and they did the rest.
  16. Unfortunately the eggs are gone. I'm guessing the male let them out and they were eaten by other fish. This is very disappointing. How often do these fish breed? I hope to get them to spawn again soon.
  17. oh ok I though I had to leave the eggs in there until they reach wiggler stage. I saw a few escape the cave and get picked off, so I'm assuming some are ready. Also won't removing the eggs now cause them the fungus. I don't want to remove them until I know the risk of fungus is minimal. I would also put them in a fry tank with baby blue gouramis. Don't think they are big enough to eat them but I will still put a divider for a few weeks at least. What and when should I start feeding the babies. I have algae waffer, brine shrimp and veggis ready to go.
  18. Can I pull the cave already? I'm not sure if all the fry hatched. should I put an airstone in to keep the flow?
  19. Hey everyone, I have a male and a female pleco in my 180l community tank. It appears that they bred, which is great news because I was trying to breed them for about 2 months now. I'm pretty sure this is the dads first time. I saw three fry out of the cave. Two were eaten but one is stying very close to the cave. You could see the little fry but its mostly egg yolk (see pic). When should I pull them out? I think dad might have kicked them out by accident. He was siting on the eggs for a few days now (about 4 I think). I have a fry tank set up, and I want maximal survival rate thats why I want to pull them out.
  20. Hello, I have a 3 gallon desk aquarium and was wondering if I could keep one male Aphyosemion australe gold killifish. I'm not sure if the tank will be big enough for him. I also know that killifish are jumpers but I don't know how high they jump. Is there any other nano fish which can be kept alone or in pairs in that sized aquarium?
  21. oh wow! Do you do water cold water changes to promote breeding? How long does it take to grow out the fry to a sellable size? I don't know if my LFS has rapashi but I will try to get some. I also sometimes feed zucchini I heard it good for them.
  22. Alright. At least is breeding behaviour. Did you mean that the female wasn't ready to lay the eggs? I feed a mix of algae waffers and greenbeans and sometimes some blood worms will make their way to the bottom. Is there anything else I should be feeding to increase the chances of them breeding. Or is it just the matter of fattening up the female?
  23. if he trapped her that means that they have attempted to spawn right? I haven't seen him fanning at all but will check for eggs in the morning. I don't think I have the option to quarantine her but I will keep any eye on her and treat the tank if need be.
  24. I just noticed that my female bristelnose pleco is injured (see photo). It seems as if she had her scale nipped. I'm trying to breed plecos and have a male and two females. The male has chosen a cave a rarely leaves it. I think he doesn't have eggs inside because he isn't fanning and I saw him leave the cave multiple times. They have been in the tank together for about 2 weeks now. There are 5 columbian tetras, 2 angelfish and one gourmai but none of them seem to have even noticed the plecos. I saw the male and the female interact for the past couple of days so I had my hopes up but don't know what to make of this. I'm gonna check for eggs later but doubt I will find anything
