Native to Madagascar drylands, the pods are apparently carried by floodwaters to new areas of land to germinate. The pods can remain dormant, waiting anywhere from 5 to 11 years for the floodwaters that will relocate the pods to a suitable environment to grow... they have become endangered in Madagascar because so many people have taken the pods away to grow elsewhere, where they have become invasive.

Apparently, the pods have natural herbicidal tendencies, to improve their chances to successfully grow, and the bark and gum are medicinal.

Based on all the information that is available on their growth patterns and requirements for appropriate growth in Madagascar, I wouldn't put them in my aquarium. As a natural herbicide, they may inhibit growth or outright kill any plants in your aquarium. As a legume, they will send out a root from the seed pod before you see any sprouting action, and I can't find any info on how long the root gets before the sprout makes an appearance.

So, based on my knowledge of plants, trees and waterways, this is one of the few that I would not put in *my* aquarium.

I might put it in an outdoor tub without other plants though, because I like science and testing things.😁

Thank you so much for you knowledge and input. I was thinking of doing some outdoor ponds as I live in tropical Australia and it is quite warm all year round.

  2. i completely destroyed the duckweed population in my 15 gal it literally took hours but it was worth it. also exiting news i got a job at foodworks, I'm 14 and i have had a job since i was 9 and i am basically a qualified baker so i am exited as i am saving for a much more organised and useful fishroom.

  3. Hi. I am 13 years old in Australia and want to write a little fact and guide book for my grandpa as I don't see him often, and has been having trouble with his knee. Him and I don't have a whole lot in common besides he used to breed fish, so because of this I want everything I've learnt about bristlenose plecos to share with him. So please tell me everything your know about Bnp to help me write a book for my Pop.

  4. Hi, today I was looking at my fish tanks and lately I have been a little lazy and been having some burn out. So I looked into my 10 gallon kerri tetra tank to see babies that have grown up. I'm so exited and wanted to share how they are growing and the setup20211213_104536.jpg.e7d2d3ab67b7cb6d58853a3effc3df4c.jpg

I used to use a stock tank.

Now, I fill up a kiddy pool, use a tank only scrub brush, and scrub the wood in the kiddy pool and change the water every few days.

The final week, I pour some beneficial bacteria on the wood, and get the bloom taken care of.

    That's for the big pieces.

For little pieces, I have a giant soup pot dedicated to boiling wood. I add salt to the first 2 boils, and then I use regular water for the next 3 - 4 boils (I keep boiling until the wood smell is gone).

I actually have some pieces of wood in my T4 tank (spouse's tank) that have not sunk after 7 months: 2 months in the kiddy pool, and 5 months in the tank.

That is not typical,  however. Normally the wood is waterlogged by now. So I have terrestrial mosses growing on the wood, and I am considering adding ferns.🤷‍♂️

if i was you i would add ferns. they look friken awesome

This is a fair caution. I agree, don’t let sterile hybrids into the hobby if at all possible.

I’m curious: have you experienced keeping either species much before?

No I haven't but am curious to make my aquarium identical to a amazon basin

  7. The reason I wanted to try this is because I wanted to set up a biotope. With Herman blue rams, bristlenose, corys, tetras and some other sort of chiclid like a angel or discuss. I want it to be all natural and observe the rams claim territory and breed and the Cory eggs being scattered all across the glass with the tetras breeding in the Java moss. It is my dream aquarium and to make it as natural as possible I wanted to experiment with anoxic filtration to expand the overall process of the cycle. Anyone else who wants to do the same?

  8. Hi, I was recently going through YouTube and found this interesting topic on a new filter I never heard of that got rid of nitrates almost all together after matururing. The science is proven but is it worth getting one? Also if you don't know what an anoxic filter is, it is basically a low oxygen environment that allows bacteria to strip nitrates if oxegeon and leaves nitrogen which transfers into the air. What are your thoughts?

  9. I recently found that one of the bnp I breed is very dark, almost black. The parents are a albino and a common bnp. Could this be a cool genetic trait or just strange camouflaging. Let me know what u think.
