I typically find that tetras can be shy regardless of having a background or not until their numbers get around ~10 fish for me. Guppies seem to occasionally start shy, but as they spawn and increase the numbers also get very outgoing (especially if they think food may be involved). But most all of my aquariums are densely planted so that typically helps as well as more cover tends to lead to the fish feeling more secure.

For your fish I don't think you "have to" have a background, so up to you if you think the tank would look better with one or not but I can't see it having any negative effects on the fish. I would make sure you have enough plants/cover and if the aquarium is in a place with a lot of activity/foot traffic (or flashing light from a television) a background could help make the fish feel more secure. And as with all things aquarium related time seems to make the biggest difference for me as the fish settle into their new habitat.

ah maybe it's because I lived in a studio where my aquarium is in between with my tv and computer... maybe I should add a backgroun on the back then... I'll think about it, thanks for helping!

I have never used a aquarium background. for breeding fish it may be important so the fish feel like they can back up to something. I know with discus fish backhrounds are reccomended along with altum angelfish. I have heard of fish getting scared and swimming into the glass, and killing them selves because of it (this is very common with altums angelfish and some wildcaught fish)

oh interesiting insight as well.. I'll make sure to remember that!

I find it can depend on the fish as some like a safe space to back up to and a background can provide a safe side of the tank. For most of the fish I keep they don't seem to care, so the only benefit would be ascetics.

What fish are you looking to keep? That would possibly help me give you a more specific answer than "sorta" 😉

I see, I have 30 Gal Aquarium and I have 5 Black Neon, 5 Albino, and 2 Oto. The neons always move to the back of the aquarium eveyertime I turned on the light but when I turned it off they starts to wander around but sometimes they would stay at the back of the background. So, I am doing some test by buying 3 more guppies to see if they have the same behaviour and when I put it in at first they wander around the tank for a while, then few minutes later they are following what the neons are doing. So, I was thinking maybe they are stressed because they are looking at their own reflection? Please give me a clarity XD

  3. Hey guys,
    Quick question,

Is it important for a tank to use aquarium background? and why?

A lot of article says it's important for their color and stress but I've seen some people not using any backgrounds as well. So, this is where I start to wonder actually...

  4. Hey guys,

I just want to give an update about my aquarium. When I first time joined this hobby, I was so lost of what should I be doing for keeping up my tank because the water parameters are never stable. Until I watched cory’s video and I found out about this amazing community! Everyone is so helpful and I learned a lot from the posts that all of you shared!

Today, I finally achieved 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrite and 5 Nitrates! And This is a big accomplishment for me as I tried to make everything 0 except the nitrates.

I just want to give my big thanks to this community and especially cory!

    Hi Kenneth!

Greater Vancouver area has some fantastic LFS. Some Youtubers have done store tours of a few of these.

April's Aquariums in Burnaby - nano fish and planted tanks. Selection of hardscape materials as well. This is my go to (close to home, great selection and staff)

The Wet Habitat in North Van

    Rogers Aquatics in Surrey

    Fish Addicts in Langley

    Aquariums West downtown Vancouver

    King Ed Pets in Burnaby

    I'm sure there are more!

    Hello Binky!

Yeah! Last week, I did store reasearch where I visit each available stores nearby Vancouver. I can say April's Aquarium and Wet Habitats are really good! They are my to go destination for aquascape!

The best things about sponges and floss, they can be squished and trimmed!  THEY ALWAYS FIT!  I have an Aquaclear 50 at the moment, so it won't be exactly the same, but when I get home from work I'll try to get you some pics of mine.

Ahhhhh true! If I want to add carbon inside should I put it in a bag that have tiny holes on it or I can just pour the carbon inside of the filter?

Also, Thanks! I’ll be waiting for your picture 🤪

Throw the cartridge in the garbage, it's a scam to keep getting your money and creates a lot of unnecessary plastic trash.

Hot rod it yourself, pick up some coarse sponge and filter floss. When its time to clean it, just replace the filter floss and rinse the sponge out in tank water. I like to clean them during a water change so I have plenty to rinse out the sponge.

Depending on how much room is available in your HOB, you can add chemical filtration like charcoal or purigen (I don't) or just extra bio media like ceramic rings or bio balls.

I agree, I had some thoughts actually for changing it. Do you mind providing me a picture of your filter? Just for reference.

I'm currently using Marineland Biowheel Power Filter 100 for my 10 Gallon Tank. Not sure if it will fit.

Also, since you're the OP, you can edit your post title and content to include your reply.

Unless you like the D ... to each his own

I just realised that! Ha! thanks!

  8. Sorry! I accidentally pressed enter when I was trying to make a post! It's been a while since I am able to make a post because there was a problem where I can't make a new topic and keeps telling me to type the title which I have repeated for 5 times.

    Anyway,

I am was doing research about replacing old cartridge to a new one and they said it will remove any old bb and it'll cause "New Tank Syndrome" again. Is there a way to replace it without losing? I'm using HOB Filter at the moment.

Heeeyyy, this is looking good! Lots of cover and safe spots, an airstone, live plants! Good job Kenneth! This is looking like a fishy wonderland. You are definitely on the right track!

Looks like anacharis. If anacharis is illegal in your region, it's probably elodea. Either way, it's a hardy easy-to-grow plant that can be planted or floated.

Ah yes, It's Elodea! Thank you very much! I've been looking this at google like "long live aquarium plants" or "hornwort lookslike" and I can't find it lol!
Anacharis and Elodea looks almost the same ... though

  11. Can anyone help me to identify what plant is this? It’s the tall one! I bought it from a local pet store and they told me it’s good for beginner and can be planted in a gravel or just leave it floating and they didn’t put the name on it when I was at the store.

I want to make sure I can take care of it properly so I can do more research about it. Any helpers would be much appreciated!
