  1. I recently upgraded from a standard 10 gallon to a gorgeous 17 gallon rimless tank. Inhabitants are 3 peppered corydoras, 1 honey gourami, and 5 male guppies.

The tank is moderately planted right now, with a goal to see it fill in to a heavily planted space.

I'm considering some options to add stock to this tank and am looking for some interesting ideas. Here are are a few of the options I'm considering:

    1) Get a few more guppies and call it a day. (Boys only. Not interested in breeding)

    Or

    2) Add a small school of "something". Probably NOT tetras as I can't seem to keep them alive. Rasboras and rainbow fish have done very well in my tanks, though.

I'm also wondering if I could add a hillstream coach to the existing mix of fish.

Is love to hear your experience and recommendations!

  2. Thanks @Bobbieand @Mmiller2001. You pretty much validated my plan. I made the move and the weaker fellow seems to be pretty happy exploring his new digs. He has 4 male endlers as roomates and so it's a proper frat house. LOL!

Interestingly, the stronger male now seems more active in his tank instead of staying under his bubble nest and fending off violators.

  3.  Is the lid just a piece of glass? You could take it to a glass shop and ask them to cut it down for you. Or, return the lid and get a custom piece of glass cut for you. I've made several of my own lids using custom cut glass and it was very inexpensive and easy way to deal with adding lids to my tanks. There are a few videos out there on how to make your own sliding lids using vinyl shower track and glass - they are very cool and would work with your tank.

  4. Hi! I have 2 male Honey Gouramis in an 11 gallon planted tank with hides.  The dominant male is a bit of a jerk and chases the other guy quite a bit. He hasn't nipped him, but I've seen him actually pin the other dude down and be very aggressive. Over the last couple of days, I noticed the non-dominant gourami has developed stress lines.  I'm thinking of moving the less-dominant gourami to a 9 gallon Fluval Flex that currently only has a few endlers in it.

Do you think the Honey's are ok as singles or would that stress them out even more?

  5. Hello!

I'm new to honey gouramis, and they are challenging me. Lol! I posted a few days ago about my stressed honey. I ended up getting it a friend which helped for a few days and then it went back to pacing. So, I moved him and his friend to a different tank and they seem to be happier (so far)

I then bought another gourami for my 15 gallon fluval flex. It settled in great so a couple of days later I brought home a friend for him. When I put the second one in the tank, the first gourami went to full breeding dress. The newest gourami is supposed to be a male, but he  hasn't coloured up yet. They've been together for 24 hours. I haven't seen any fight or chasing.

Do you think the newest addition is just stressed still, or is my male actually a female?

my dwarf gourami is starting to do the same thing lots of glass surfing I  hope with all that I  got in my 20 long it can handle another gourami so far I  have three black tetras two corries assassin smails pond snails 2 large nerite snails and plants

Fingers crossed! I know the dwarf are bigger than the honey, but if it helps my guys are in a Fluval Fllex 15 gallon along with 3 ottos, a nerite and a shoal of exclamation rasboras with lots of plants and hiding spots. They all have enough space, and I'll be keeping a close eye on the water parameters over the next week or so to see if I need to make adjustments with water changes.

This is great news! I really would love to add honey gourami to my community... planning on getting three of them. Waiting for my quarantine tank to get all set first!

I am SO relieved. They are really, really fun to watch. Lots of personality. My daughters fish seems ok in his tank, but after watching my teontoday, I really think I have an excuse to buy another fish. Um, I mean, I really think he'd be much happier with a friend. Lol!

My Crypt (not for AC because I live in Canada) took a long time to adjust, but once it did, it popped! Don't give up on them! It loves root tabs. Now there's a new leaf or two every week!

Hi, fellow Canadian here. What do you use for root tabs?

  9. My poor Honey Gourami has been pacing almost non-stop since I brought him home 3 weeks ago. Yesterday, I couldn't take it anymore and decided to get him a friend.

    SUCESS!!!

The boys have been together nearly 24 hrs and the pacing stopped the minute I placed the bag in the tank.  The aquarium is peaceful and it's a lot of fun watching them together. Phew!

Now I think I need to get friend for my daughter's single boy.... 😬

Yeah the info on Honeys' is kinda sketchy. I have 2 males in a 75 and they are best buds....but that is not set in stone. So, that pH is kinda high for these guys. I would just watch and keep and eye on him. My best guess is the water may be on the harder side and he could be agitated. Some disease can cause this as well; parasites comes to mind. I'm sure some others will comment but my bet is on the harder water.

Thanks very much! I wonder if the store I bought him from does something to lower the pH of their water. He did come from a lfs, but it could be they are running their tanks at a lower Ph. My daughter has a honey in one of her tanks, and he adapted just fine, right away. But he came from a different lfs.

I put a large Indian Almond Leaf in the tank tonight to see if that might help. Typically I'm  not a huge fan of tannins, but if this helps the poor little guy settle, I don't care about the colour of the water!

Honeys are pretty social. They do like the company of each other.

That said, did you treat him with any medications and what are your water parameters?

He hasn't been treated with any meds. Parameters are:

    Ammonia 0

    Nitrite 0

    Nitrate 20

Ph 8.2 (This is typical PH for where I live, and a steady, constant reading in my tanks)

I'm kind of overwhelmed with all of the conflicting info out there. I am happy to get him a buddy, but don't know if I should get him a girlfriend or a another male, or even 2 females??

  12. I brought a male Honey Gourami home 3 weeks ago and he seems to be having trouble settling down. Originally, I put him in a 9 gallon Fluval Flex with no tank mates. He seemed happy and curious the first day or so, and then started pacing the front of the tank almost non-stop.  Probably 80% of the time he is pacing.

After 3 weeks of watching him pace, I moved him last night to a 15 gallon flex where he has a small shoal of exclamation rasboras, 3 otocinclus and a Nerite as tank mates. He seemed excited about the new home until around noon today, when he started pacing again and hasn't stopped.

The tank is established with good parameters and is planted with a heater. He is eating and seems healthy.

I was under the impression that these guys could live without a friend. In fact my daughter has a single dude in her 10 gallon tank who seems quite happy with just his Corie friends. But I'm wondering if my guy needs a goirami friend to settle him down?

Getting a bigger tank is not an option for me, so basically my options are

    1) Get a friend for him

    3) Put him back in the Flex 9

    2) Rehome him

    Thanks for any advice!

  13. Hi! I'm a Canadian and just started keeping fish a year ago. I've learned so much from the Aquarium Co-Op videos, and am looking forward to learning even more from all of you.

Right now, my daughter and I have a whole bunch of tanks, ranging in size from 3 gallon to a 15 gallon flex. Most of our fish are betta, but we also have honey gouramis, ottos, shrimp, salt and pepper Cories, exclamation rasboras, Nerite snails and a few endlers.

Looking forward to being part of the community!1758121386_PXL_20210417_225836990.PORTRAIT3.jpg.b89227da801e4ea8a1b1bde194ea81ec.jpg
