@Stealth Aquatics I am asking as I am setting up a 40 g that will be a breed for fish food and supplies tank with 2 types of plecos - hypancistrus and ancistrus as well as corys. I’ve been debating on doing a small livebearer as well but was concerned about cory eggs.

I had my sterbai corys in with my guppy colony on my 40 breeder and I never saw a Cory egg at all I saw them breed, but no eggs remained. Once I singled them out I got eggs.

@Stealth Aquatics it sounds like you’re having second thoughts on breeding Apistos and  corys - is it that the LFS won’t pay you what they’re worth or the difficulty of raising them vs ease of shrimp and guppies?

I am not sure how the lfs will treat me as I haven’t sold to them yet. I did the corys more as a side project as my shrimp sales fund literally my whole small fish room. So if they just give credit that is ok…. But not ideal. They don’t populate as fast as guppies obviously, but for ease I’ll probably switch to guppies and shrimp as I have 2 little kids

With the size of your fish room and apparent experience you could set up a few tanks just for money making.
@Stealth Aquatics has a great journal on their for profit fish room.
In my area folks are using Craigslist to sell shrimp for $5 a piece, fancy guppy pairs for $15-20 and Java Moss for $5 per small cup.

Thanks dude! I am still very very new to breeding fish, as I haven’t brought my first batch to the store, but the profit for me is in shrimp. You don’t even need to heat their tanks. I sell them on eBay for more of a quantity for price than the competition. I sold 2k take home this spring, and I’ll ship a good amount here in a few weeks. After each selling season I cull hard and select the best ones for the next season. Feed heavy and start over. I’m doing research on how to ship fish, and I think I’ll exclusively ship fancy guppies because if there is a problem in shipping, they breed fast enough thst I can fix the issue. Where as these sterbai cory thst I have raised took like 4 months. I’ll probably expand and get some blue shrimp as well to sell. But I run 1 display tank and 6 tanks in my small fish room and 1 ten gallon shrimp tank pays for all of that. I ship 3-6 boxes a week depending on time and orders when I’m selling.

  4. An update on my small, but profitable fish room. My 4 leopard frog plecos are doing great, 1 DOA. I wish I had 5. But they are more active now in the tank. My sterbai Corys are about big enough for the store. I have about 40 of them. Idk if the store will take them or not for cash, but if they don’t I’ll take store credit and transition to more shrimp and guppies. I have about 12 apistogramma macmasteri that are just now starting to color a little, so they will go to a store soon? If the store really want only store credit, then I’ll transition to plan b, which is fine because I make a lot of money off of shrimp and eBay. Enjoy!

  5. What’s tough about this is that it was 2 orders, I had to figure out combined shipping and send a larger box. The buyer was asking all of these care questions and I was trying my best to teach as much as possible. Questions about buyers ph and food ect. And they all get their fine. 4 days later the buyer complains that about half have died and files a case. eBay wanted the buyer to send them back to me. I said that wouldn’t work because over half are dead now. And they took the money and gave it back to the buyer. So I literally spent 20$ shipping my shrimp to the buyer.

  6. I do not know how Cory is so matter of fact and no questions asked he just refunds the person. I guess he has done this a few times.

I sell RCS on eBay to fund my hobby. I had someone buy 2 orders from me (60 shrimp). I figured out how to combine ship and gave a partial refund for shipping costs. The buyer asked me over a dozen questions about how to care for them and I responded quickly and gave all the advice and instructions.

my shrimp arrived all alive and on time. The buyer gave me a positive review. 4 days later the buyer filed a claim stating they received the wrong item from what was listed and they got their money back. They claimed that 30 of the 60 shrimp died. I literally paid 20$ to ship my shrimp to them. Not counting all the time I spent talking to this buyer. I filed a claim with eBay and they wanted the buyer to ship it back to me. I said that isn’t appropriate and I shouldn’t be punished for selling the correct product in a timely manner.

it still is in dispute, but the buyer got all their money back (from me) and I feel so gutted against this fraudulent claim because I raise the shrimp and I truly love the hobby. I’m not a huge business doing this, it’s a side gig to pay for some aquarium stuff.

idk how Cory can do this so gracefully. I have rage building hahaha

Pretty sure that if a tank reads 0, 0, and 0, that's a red flag that it might not have cycled (or the cycle crashed and needs re-done). I could be wrong. I do know for sure that plants need some nitrates though, so this is definitely something to look into.

A tank that's epically balanced can often just do evaporation top-offs. So yeah, I'd put a pause on water changes, and keep up with the water testing to make sure nothing is going wrong.

    Sorry - that's all I got.

Could also be that the plants are eating all the nitrates and the tank needs some feet’s too. I notice that my plant growth slows on my betta tank and there aren’t any nitrates and I need to fert more.

  8. Hello!

I have recently purchased some leopard frogs and I’m having a hard time knowing if they are eating or not, and because of their price tag it’s giving me anxiety. I have fed love bbs, repashy omnivore, a few green beans, and I’m not sure if they are eating because of their nocturnal lifestyles.
they might have eaten the repashy as I couldn’t find it in the tank this am, but these are fish that I have wanted for several years now.
do any of you have any tips or ideas to help me monitor them eating or to calm my anxiety haha. Thanks.

  9. L134 Leopard Frogs are settling in for their first night. 4 out of 5 made their journey 😔. I will probably buy 2 more to get a group of 6 for my breeding project. I have wanted these fish since I started keeping fish (2 years) but I wanted to get my feet underneath me. I already love them.

I debated putting it there or not haha

Hi @Stealth Aquatics, yes the light is inspired by MD. I saw him use a floodlight so I thought I would give it a shot given how cheap they are in comparison to a kessil for instance (I love the shadows and shimmer you get from a single point source light). I like how they are rated for outdoor water exposure as well. I have not watched many MD videos in quite some time however so I am not sure if he is using a different system now haha

The light holder is more of a solution I came up with myself but I have seen others do something similar. I just used PVC pipe and adjusted the dimensions and design as per my needs. Then I used zip ties to attach the floodlight.

This is how the aquarium looks like now.

That looks so good! I saw those lights and was like I know where he got that idea haha. I’m glad they are working for you too

Yup! I second the inkbird controllers. They have wifi enabled and non-wifi options (non-wifi are cheaper), and they have single and dual probe options. I have heard occasionally of one of the probes going out of calibration, and the dual probe options check the temperature between each probe and issues an alarm if they get too different from each other. And unless you want to run a chiller or fan in addition to a heater, you don't need the ones that can control both heating and cooling, just heating.

I just bought some L134s. I will be purchasing this for sure! Too expensive for a breeding group of them to not protect them the best I can
