I'm down to be wrong and to have everything said to be an assumption.

I just hope they can make it into one of those many tanks bigger than 10g before it is almost a year since last august. Took some time to be a grow out tank for 11 barbs, I "assume".

    Good luck man.

    Cheers,

I tagged you an only ex tiger barb keeper I know of.

Too bad I couldn't hide my shocking reaction at that point. ;D

    You are welcome

The barbs in question are a bit smaller than a nickel at this point. I have more than one tank as i “assume” others here do.

Referring me to the other person you knew that also kept them was appreciated

Well, in this forum, everyone's concern is the fish and providing them a good care.

Asking and trying to learn is always nice. But answers in fishkeeping are generally not direct but needs to touch lots of points to provide the best of help.

Your question at the beginning leads to "I have two nerites but I want more clean up crew members for my tiger barbs", and then," I have my tiger barbs in a 10g".

Corys and kuhlis won't fit in that 10g ideally as a part of grow out tank anyway, as it is already overstocked the way it is. And smaller than ideal sized tank and group sizes, tiger barbs gets agressive. Most corys grow in big sizes, and loaches need a big  sifting surface. And we can by no means assume you are planning to move them from the way the question asked.

Also this info matches your avatar and the pics you have shared in another topic, and if so, you also have another fish there too, and your tigers seems a pretty good size that is out of 10g limit already, from last year.

If the pics you have shared belong to another tanks with rockpiles and dwarf sag and tiger barbs from last year, then okay.

Again, our concern is fish's wellbeing, so we just gonna advice it even if it is not what was asked.

Everyone here will try to help you with their best knowledge. Noone really is judgy here. If someone mentions something, it is almost always for the good. This is the only place I've never seen someone trying to proving a point or acting bossy really. Don't take the suggestions negatively please.

Thanks for continuing to make assumptions and proving my point.

I have many tanks (lots of sand and rock piles in many of them with dwarf sag - it multiplies quickly) and the fish are moved around to appropriately sized aquariums as they grow.

  3. While I appreciate everyone's concern about the size of the tank, that wasn't the question I asked. I have a larger tank ready for them when they are ready to move and have grown a bit more. They are quite small right now and I am aware of their needs as they get larger. Just wanted others opinions on bottom dwellers that others might have experienced before in conjunction with the Tiger Barbs. I have my own opinions that I have experienced in the past with the Tiger Barbs, but wanted to compare it with what you all have experienced as well. Lesson learned. I'll be sure to read only going forward and listen to others on their YouTube videos going forward.

Let's remember Cory's comments on the live stream a few weeks ago about commenting on others stocking of their tanks since you don't necessarily have all the information before you comment.

Cool water species. So plecos and corydoras are very good to pair with them.

Also is very good as a shrimp cull tank, amanos, loaches (check temps) and a few other things.

I had panda corydoras, clown pleco, BNP, RLP, and Borneo loaches.  All of my tanks usually have amano shrimp as well. Barbs did fine with em as long as you give the shrimp cover.

Definitely an important question as well as setup. Barbs like to swim around and through things.

That's what I was hoping for. I was wanting to go with some cory's and a khuli loach to swim around the rock pile.

The tank is a 10 gallon with 11 tiger barbs & 2 nerite snails. Planted heavily across the back half with lots of dwarf sag.

  5. Anyone have any suggestions for bottom dwellers to go along with Tiger Barbs? I have a couple of nerite snails that are taking care of the algae, but was thinking about some cory's but not 100% certain that the Tiger Barbs would be ok with them. Anyone have any experience they could lend on the matter?

  6. This is what I used....

I've been really happy with it on my 10 gallon tank. I've had it on this tank since last summer and I really like it. It really brightens up this thank compared to my other tanks that I have a black background on. I have dwarf sag across the back of the tank, so if there is any algae on it I can't really see it for all of the dwarf sag. The picture below is from last fall...the plants have filled in quite a bit since the photo was taken.

Just be sure to mask the sides before you spray the back or you'll get a bit of overspray on them. Not a big deal though. Easily remedied with a razor blade.

  7. I'm not sure why they lost popularity at all. I've used them for years and they always produce the clearest water of all of my tanks. As I rescape my other tanks I will be changing back to the undergravel if I have to build them from scratch myself. They only reason I am using HOB filters right now is because I wanted to use a sand substrate, but after dealing with the HOB's I will switch to a gravel substrate and go back to the undergravel ASAP.

Something I need more than life itself is a net/intake cover/grid/thingamajig that fits over the python water changer hose but actually also sucks water through it. I've rigged a hot-glued bit of craft mesh but I know it won't last forever... Gonna ask my 3D printing-inclined friend if he can manage to cook me up one but until then I live in constant fear of sucking up fry.

Yes! Spirulina pellets?! Why don't they exist?

Have you tried a piece of panty hose and a rubber band?

I’m jealous! I would love to have some one day. I like the green ones as well.

They all seem like they have big personalities.

A barb pond is literally one of the things I wish I could share with people.  They are the worlds most fun fish at times.  They are really nice, I'm so glad you're enjoying them!

Mix up some varieties or check out newer versions to see which one you like!

Thank you. They really are. I wish more people enjoyed them.

They look great! They’re one of those freshwater fish that really pop, even from across the room. Good choice have Cherry barbs as tank mates, that’s a great combo.

Thank you! I agree, they definitely get a lot of attention from people that aren't in the hobby. I like the cherry barbs, but I'm not having a lot of luck with them.

Good For You! I hope to keep this fish someday myself in a species-only setup. They certainly do look nice.

Thank you. I am really pleased with how they look.

Barbs get a bad rep but they are quite a fun fish in any tank. Their colors really pop against planted backgrounds!

They are full of energy and always exploring! The orange really shows up well against the greenery.

Those are lovely tanks, and I like the way you’ve managed to get all three stacked up in that small footprint! Clever!

Thank you! I only had room for one stand in our living room, so I figured I needed to maximize my space! Lol! Needless to say my wife was surprised when I told here I was going to build a stand for my 20 gallon and ended up building this one!

Your tanks are gorgeous! I love the cichlids. They look like tropical fish with all the amazing colors!

Thank you! They are my favorite. I've wanted some for years! I've always thought they were the prettiest of the tropical fish. They are wildly curious too. Anytime I clean their tank they aren't scared. They come right up to my hand and peck at me the whole time. lol

The opaline I picked up was fairly large maybe about 3.5-4”— much larger than my tiger barbs. He went after the tiger barbs a lot at first and got them in line. I don’t know if a dwarf gourami would do it as they're roughly similar in size

I tried a dwarf gourami last week for about 5 minutes and they wouldn't leave him alone, so I had to put him in my 20 gallon community tank.

RTBS is probably way too small of a tank for them.

    Barbs:  Melon barbs, Odessa barbs.

I kept white clouds with mine.

As the fish get big you're going to run into some pecking and fighting.  So I would try to stick to bigger schools of smaller fish.

Kabutai rasbora, white clouds, etc.  Melon barbs I think stay decently small, but others stay pretty big.

With the scape you have, it's a PERFECT setup for some hillstream loaches or borneo loaches. 🙂

All you would need to do is add an airstone somewhere.

Corydoras also work if you want something on the bottom to clean up food the fish miss out on.  with the sand, they'd do well.

My thinking with the RTBS is as he grows I would move him to my 20 gallon and then on to my son's 55 gallon.

I will check into those Hillstream Loaches. They look very interesting. I do have an airstone tucked in behind the heater. It's hard to see, but it's there.

I was also thinking of a small school of the pygmy corys for the tank since its small.

Ive had success keeping swordtails and platies with tiger barbs.

I have some platies I'd like to move down there, but the LFS said it was a no go, but I've seen multiple articles on the internet saying they would be fine. I may give them a try! Thanks!

Definetely bottom dwellers or algae eaters should be pretty good for the Tiger Barbs

It think I'm going to get a small school of pygmy corys if I can find them.

I have a tiger barb dedicated 75g tank (about 35 of them) and have tried a couple things. I had some cherries from a previous tank that aren’t bothered at all and some kuhli loaches as well as some amano shrimp (they have large driftwood to hide in). I’m sure that you could probably do some neons or similar for some color variety if you wanted. I also had to get a “tank boss” so they wouldn’t fight as much and a opaline gourami worked well.

That’s what I’m wanting is a tank boss too. I’ll have to check into those. I looked at some gouramis today, but I wasn’t sure if the tiger barbs would pick at them.

  16. Any suggestions on some tank mates for tiger barbs? I’ve added some cherry barbs today and they seem to be getting along well so far.

However, I would like some more colorful fish I guess. I’m considering a red tail shark, but I’m stumped from there. I keep getting conflicting information from my LFS and articles on the internet.

What have been your experiences with tiger barbs and tank mates for them?

  17. Hello! I’ve been in and out of fish-keeping here in Western Kentucky since I was a kid. I’ll be 49 in October and have finally been able to get the fish and tanks that I’ve always wanted.

I discovered Cory on YouTube in 2018 after being out of the hobby for years and my wife saw how much I enjoyed the videos and remembered the aquariums early in our marriage and how much I loved them. So, she bought me a 10 Gallon for Christmas that year and here we are now! Lol!

I have a 40 gallon breeder with African Cichlids. This is the most recent addition for me. I’ve only had them for about a year now and I really enjoy them. They are full of personality!

I have the 20 gallon long that is my community tank. It has swordtails, tetras, German blue rams, platys, corys, a dwarf cichlid and a couple of flag fish.

I just redid my 10 gallon about a month ago. I started with tiger barbs and a nerite snail and today I bought the cherry barns.

I am itching to get a 55 or 75 gallon next to upgrade my cichlids to a higher tank and change out my 40 gallon to a community tank for larger tetras and maybe some full size gouramis.

  18. As far as over feeding goes, I try to keep it to where I don't feed any more than what they can eat within 5 minutes or so. That's an arbitrary number that I came up with, but it seems to work for my fish. They all seem fine and look healthy.

I like to feed them just a little bit at a time for the course of 5 minutes until they get bored sometimes too.

I’m also going to say try the dwarf sag. I also like Crypt Spiralis. It has a very similar look to Val.

That's a nice looking one too. Thank you!

I read Val doesn't do well in acidic water. I am not sure how accurate that is but I know I have low pH and Val didn't do well for me.

I struggle with that as well.
