Lot of red plants, I’ll get there one of these days. Maybe. Do you dose iron?
Very nice scape and all your plants look healthy too!

    Thank you ☺️

I don't dose iron or use CO2. I picked plants marked easy and used fluvial stratum as the substrate.

has the tank been set up long?

Two and a half months. All sorts of things have grown on it, and been eaten off by my clean up crew, but this is new. It started about two weeks ago. At that point, I had three amano shrimp, two otocilclus catfish, a snail, and my Betta.

Friday before last, I saw one of my huge shrimp eating a dead oto. The shrimp were also shredding my plants! I fished out the dead oto, caught all the shrimp, and went to my LFS, where they rehomed the shrimp, and sold me three new otos.

Here we are a week later, the plants are recovering, but I found another oto dead. 😕

I don't know what, if anything, I am doing wrong. There is plenty for them to eat, and the water parameters are good. It all got squirrelly when the white stuff showed up, and that could be coincidence, but I figured I'd better ask the community.

  3. Hi folks,

This white stuff has been forming on the manzanita log. Anyone know what it is?

Im a bit concerned. I've lost two otocilclus catfish in a week.

I just did a water change, and now there are bits of this floating in the water.

Did a parameter check, and everything is good according to the aquarium co-op test strips, including the separate ammonia one.

    Thanks in advance.

Well ... now that just adds something ELSE I have to have now.. LOL.. Wonder what kind of plants could go in it.. ? I think it would look really cool staggered along the back of a tank wall..

OH NO.... Please stop me.. 😂

Great looking tank! That is also a beautiful beta 💗

Thanks! He sleeps on the cardinal plant I've got in there, and he just made his first bubble nest!

I really like what you did with the tank.  I have not seen someone use a glass pot like that.

I had a notion to have plants grow out of it for Seamus to rest on instead of getting one of those fake silk Betta leaf hammock things. He hasn't used it like that, but he does like hanging around it.

  6. Thanks to all the advice and support you all have given me, my first tank (set up June 5th) is doing well, and I'm sincerely happy with it.

In my ten-gallon, planted tank I've got three amano shrimp, two otocilclus catfish, a purple mystery snail, and my pride and joy Betta, Seamus von Toot. 60674346_PXL_20210725_1903434932.jpg.e27a0388a94e9c92ec429f131504ce2e.jpg

  7. Hey folks,

So the ammonia is finally down and the nitrates/ nitrites are way up here in Week 3 of the new tank.

At this point, should I do a water change? Or let the bacteria work? I've tried to Google this, but returns are unclear.

    Thanks!

new plants from where? if they were grown in water, they have a bacterial film growing on them. if they came out of a tube, or a tissue culture or grown dry, then they wont have an established good bacteria on them.

PetSmart, tissue culture. So, yeah, starting at the very beginning, but that's probably best fore to learn like this.

If you intend to stay with low ph and soft water you may wish to not include snails.  They really need ph above 7 or shells erode and they need at least moderately hard water lots of calcium and some magnesium for shell growth. Have fun with your new tank

My water is hard as nails, I just need to get the pH up, I'm told. I've got some crushed coral on the way. 🙂

One thing I think I should call out is that Fluval Stratum has a well earned reputation for trapping and releasing ammonia when new.  I see it in your tank and I see that it is capped. You may very well run into ammonia spikes if that cap is broken or at a later point as water slowly leeches from the Fluval through that cap.

Thanks for your entire comment, but especially for this part because I didn't know this at all. I'll definitely keep an eye on it!

  11. The plants look great, and I am seeing new growth. The directions on the ammonia said to dose 40 drops for 10 gallons which I did. I'm not sure what parts per million that is.

The ph and the buffer are naturally that way. I tested the water before I did anything with the tank. It has never changed. I don't know how to change those things.

  12. Good morning everyone,

A week ago yesterday, I set up my 10 gallon tank. It has fluval stratum, rough grain inert sand, and four different types of plants. I used quick start and stress coat and dosed with ammonia appropriately. Yesterday, I did a small water change about a gallon of water. There's plenty of biofilm in there. I don't have any livestock yet. Here is this morning's test strip.

Is my tank cycled or am I missing something? Thank you!
