  1. Hello all, I have a 100 gallon outdoor aquaponics pond that has started reading high chlorine levels over the past weeks. I’ve treated the entire pond with prime a couple times, but the readings always come back with high chlorine. Water changes are done very rarely and new water is added mostly by rainfall. Fish seem fine they are eating vigorously and have no signs of external issues (I even pulled a few out to inspect closer in a see through container) I am very confused as to if I actually have high chlorine, or if there is something else in the water that could be causing those readings.

I have no first hand experience breeding any of the following, but I think both Bolivian rams and German blue rams provide parental care. Bristlenose pleco males guard fry, as do some (all?) gourami species.

My bristlenose pleco males will guard and fan the eggs until they hatch, but after that they are on their own. Seems like the apistos might be the way to go!

  3. Hello all, went to feed my 100 gallon outdoor aquaponics pond today and I found these black orbs all over the surface of the water. Any idea what they could be? My current stock is guppies, swordtails, and sarasa comet goldfish. Initially I thought goldfish eggs? I live in the FL keys where they pond temp is usually 80-85F, I would think it’s way too hot for them to spawn. Any input is appreciated!

  4. Hello all, has anyone ever used the 5 shelf wire racks from amazon for fish tanks? It says they are rated up to 350lbs per shelf, and a 20 gallon long fits very nicely onto the shelf. I’ve heard 20 longs are 225lbs with water so I have some wiggle room. Substrate will be a thin layer of sand with clay potted plants I plan on putting a piece of plywood across the wire shelving so the tank has a flat surface to sit on.

I just want to say I love my leopard, it's such a gorgeous looking and interesting to observe and interact with fish. It likes dense plant coverage, the more jungle, the better...prefers live food but not too fussy about it. Doesn't bother tankmates unless they are of edible size.

Do you keep a single fish or are they better in a group?

I kept some about 18 years ago in a species tank  as they get older they tend to get darker and lose some of their colour  mine use to like hanging out in the plants a lot darting out when I dropped food in the tank

How many did you keep and in what size tank?

  6. Hello all!

I’m considering an oddball predator tank (specifically albino bichir and leopard ctenopomas). Curious on the communities thoughts on if the 2 species would be compatible and other things to consider such as tank size/setups. Im also interested in breeding if I went with only one of the species. I’d love to see setups anyone currently has for this type of tank. I am open to different species suggestions as well! Thanks!

  7. Hello all, I am trying to get a small brine shrimp culture going that I can harvest out of every 1-2 days. It only needs to be enough to feed 4 Pygmy sunfish. Currently I’m using a 2 gallon container. Substrate is crushed coral for added minerals/bacteria surface area. I haven’t done any water changes in months and nitrates still read 0. I am having an issue where the shrimp start dying off after 2-3 days of hatching. I am still adding eggs to the culture 1-2x a week. Any tips for keeping the shrimp alive? Thanks!

  8. I have 4 fairly new Siamese algae eaters in my 40 breeder, and I just watched 2 of them get into what looks like a little disagreement. They completely lost their stripes for about 3 minutes. Any thoughts on this? I always thought these fish were super peaceful. Last few seconds of the video show the other 2 chilling at the bottom scavenging and displaying dark stripes. I did clean my intake filter a few hours earlier and the water became cloudy from a bacteria bloom I’m thinking. First bloom I’ve had since setting up this tank a year ago.

  9. Hello all, I’ve heard that deworming fish is a common practice during quarantine. I am wondering if that applies to ALL fish, most fish, or just certain types of fish? Are there some species of fish that rarely ever have parasites? I’m sure there are some that more prone to having worms than others.

I recently bought some Siamese algae eaters to combat black beard algae in my 40 breeder. Right now they are in my quarantine tank, and I’m debating on whether to deworm or not. Thanks for any input!

  10. Any idea what this weird eye growth is? Behavior is normal eating and cruising the tank as usual. This one pleco has had this growth for a few weeks now. None of my other super reds have this. Water parameters are stable nitrates around 20 ppm, ph mid 7s. Gh 200 ppm, kh 80 ppm. Temp 79F. I’m debating trying to manually remove it and see what happens, any thoughts? Thanks!

  11. Hello all, I’ve noticed these yellowish spots on 2 of my 5 bristlenose plecos. 1 has a spot on its tail, 2nd is on the side of the others head. Any idea what they could be? Thanks!

  12. Hello all, just checked my tank and I saw about 6-7 dead cherry shrimp.  I’ve had this colony for about 2-3 years now. I added 10 more within the past month to add a little extra to the gene pool plus 10 Amano shrimp to eat some of the black beard algae in my tank. No idea what caused this die off. Everything else in the tank seems fine including the rest of the colony.

  13. Hello all, I am seeking some advice on what I might have going on in my 40 gallon breeder. Stocked are 6 baby bristlenose plecos, a trio of guppies, and a lot of shrimp. My male guppy started clamping his dorsal and tail fin, but neither of the females were. Upon a closer look into the tank I noticed one of my plecos has a piece of its tail missing plus a dot on the dorsal fin. So far I’ve pulled the guppy out and put him in a QT tank. Any suggestions are appreciated
