do you have a mystery snail? Not all snail eggs look alike. However I am not aware of any fish parasites that I would expect to lay a large clutch of visible eggs.

No mysterys in the tank, just pest snails and I doubt what I showed in the pics are snail eggs, the fish had it in its mouth like it was trying to get it out instead of eating it. It looked like it was choking or something...

  2. Today I saw one of my guppy fry on the surface and it had like a ball coming out of her mouth, so I took her out of the tank and removed this ball looking thing and it looks like eggs but I dont know if it could be parasites?... Has anyone else seen this before?

These pics really aren’t any good, but you will get the idea.  She has an appetite and eats.  But, does seem a little lethargic.  Also stays thin even after eating whereas other fish may plump up a bit right after feeding.

(pics ended upside down.  I may have to rotate or delete)

Interesting, really dont know what it is, I keep researching every day while I wait for levamisole to arrive.

  4. In these pics you can see, the female with orange fins is really skinny, and in the other pic you can see a fat healty (probably pregnant) female right next to another one that is not so good, like I said, I feel like there is still time to save them, but its been a hard time for me to see them like this 😞

  5. Follow up on this, I treated them with fritz para cleanse but it didnt do anything. I went ahead and bought levamisole and I will try that next. If that doesnt work I will set up a quarantine tank and try using salt like cory recommended, the babies are doing alright, some are growing fast but some arent, 3 of my females are still skinny but they try to keep up since I feed them frequently to keep them "healty" since they have parasites. I hope they get better with levamisole and I hope I dont mess it up with the dosing, I will update soon, and btw one of my females also had this white thing on her anus and then it retracted as the day went by, Im guessing its a stronger type of parasite and thats why Im trying levamisole next. Thanks for the replies and if anyone else has had experience with stuff like this please let me know, Im more than happy and open to ideas and recommendations.

It can affect them. Just looks like something may be going on with the skin of that fish as well. Do you have a qt tank you can put it in with salt?

I dont have a quarantine tank, the skin looks fine, it might be the camera quality, Ill be looking out for it and if it stays like that for another couple of days I will buy some salt and get a quarantine tank thanks cory!!

What are the water parameters of your tank? Looks like you may have a low pH issue going on as well? Is it all live plants in there as salt would likely clear up most things with these guppies. Otherwise it could be a prolapse causing this on this specific guppy.

Nitrate 0, nitrite 0, GH 300ppm+  KH 120-180 ppm, pH looks like 7.8 to 8.4 The only reason I havent used salt or anything its because I also keep shrimp and a lot of snails, but I have seachem equilibrium, I dont know if that would work the same way.... does salt affect shrimp and snails?

  8. So Ive noticed one of my guppy fry has this thing coming out of his anus and I dont know what it is. I treated the tank with fritz para cleanse because some of my females have wasting disease but they dont really seem to be doing bettee after about a week after treatment. Here is the picture of the fry, if anyone could help me identify what it is I would appreciate it a lot :) (by the way all the pictures are the same fish, just really hard to catch on camera)

I experienced the same situation with my 20 gallon. It starts with the females because they are bearing young, and are weaker than the males or juveniles. I moved all my fish to a 55 gallon, treated with 2 parts of Cory's trio med, but it didn't help. (I didn't use Ick-X, as there was no evidence of that.) I also did 2 rounds of PraziPro and did salt for 3-4 weeks.

I finally broke down and bought Levamisole. I did the treatment exactly as instructed. I think that's really important! I finally began to see some progress. My fish started eating again. They stopped dying by the double digits every day. Their color came back and they were livelier in the tank. I have still lost a few in the 2.5 months since, but I think those fish were too sick to recover.

Here's where I got the Levamisole:

    SELECTAQUATICS.COM

    Levamisole medication

I'd suggest you give that a try if you can, as I think the disease your experience is some kind of worm or parasitic infection.

    I hope that helps,

    Alesha (akconklin)

one more thing, do u know if this medication will harm shrimp and snails? because if it doesnt I would like to dose it in my tank without having to move fish to a separate tank since I currently dont have one

thank you, I will look into it and probably start moving fish out of the tank to treat them and hopefully it will work. Thank you so much!!!

  11. Its been a few weeks but here it goes. So I have a 10 gallon with pretty much guppies snails and shrimp, heavily planted btw. I have noticed that one female gave birth, then got really skinny and barely eats, swims little and she looks like she will die any time, then another female gave birth and the same thing happened, not eating almost anything, not swimming a lot, and THEN another one gave birth and same thing, shes starting to get skinny and rejects food, I feed a a variety of foods from xtreme flakes to hikari first bites, frozen blood worms, hikari brine shrimp etc, but they dont eat almost anything and Its so sad it looks like theyre gonna die. I dont know what to do and I have read a lot. I know it could be worms but im not really sure. Parameters are PH 7.2- 7.5 water is hard because I remineralize RO with equilibrium and alkaline buffer nitrates and nitrites 0 ammonnia 0 chlorine 0 so everything looks right... What can I do? It seems to be only the females 😞

  12. Mmm I have 3 rocks that I dont know the name, they look kind of grey/blueish and some driftwood, and I bought these at my lfs so they are aquarium safe. One cattapa leave in there that I bough from aquarium coop and the rest are all plants... like I said, GH comes out at around 60 - 80 ppm, and KH is 0 because I remineralize RO water with salty shrimp GH+ since the tanks are supposed to be for caridina shrimp. Thats one, the other one has no decor at all, just plants and its the same thing.

  13. So I have set up two tanks, one 10 gal and another 5gal... I used fluval stratum in both, because the goal was to have crystal shrimp, been using RO water remineralized with salty GH, so the water comes out pretty soft, with a ph of 6.6 - 6.7 and a TDS of 130, KH 0 and no nitrates or nitrites, its RO water of course... The problem comes when I add such water to the tank, its been about a week since I havent done a water change, but the ph keeps going up to 7.8 - 8 instead of dropping to 6.6 - 6.8 like it should, because thats what fluval stratum is supposed to do right?... I have also tried using a PH liquid from seachem that drops ph and it works for like 10 minutes, but then pH goes straight up again... I have no Idea what Im doing wrong and why Ph is not coming down like it should... Again, a little more than 2 months since the tanks were set up so I dont think the substrate is already exhausted, is this normal?? Oh and the water keeps getting cloudy and it just doesnt go away after so long.

I think you would be better served by google searching than by my very limited knowledge on diatoms. I know when it comes to micro organisms and small creatures in general there are so many species and varieties and interactions that nailing things down specifically can be impractical. GL though hope your tanks clear up soon!

    Thanks a lot!!

Your photo looks like a typical bloom but maybe on the heavy side. In eternity past I had this issue and recently my sisters tank had this issue. I believe it is cause by a bloom of bacteria or diatoms feeding off something in the substrate. In my cases it fully went away once the tanks were "fully mature" which took months.

A UV sterilizer might clear it up but time will ultimately be what solves the issue.

Could you tell me a little bit about the diatoms? Because in that shrimp tank I see a LOT of microorganisms like little worms and diatoms and stuff like that all over the place... I guess im just gonna let it settle itself but its crazy how long its been and it doesnt clear up, thanks for the reply!

Have you put the water in a white cup or bowl and seen if its green color or not? I feel this simply a symptom of the tank being basically a new tank. I find anything under a 6 months is def subject to this happening. Wait it out like said before it will pass.

It looks kinda green but Im not sure its green water since all 3 tanks have the same issue, and they have somewhat different photoperiods, on that 10g and the 40 I use nicrew leds, pretty strong and theyre on from 9 to 9, so 12 hours but again, I do the same on all my other tanks and the only ones that have this issue are the ones with fluval stratum

What are you water parameters and do you dose fertilizers? I've seen bacterial blooms before that do this and you just have to wait it out but yours sounds rough. IMO best to test water and wait it out but a UV sterilizer may help.

Parameters are GH 30ppm (I already bought some wonder shells to put in the tanks since the water is really soft and I keep guppies in some tanks) KH 240ppm+ PH 8 - 8.2 nitrates and nitrites stay at 0 all the time... I had never had this problem for so long but it seems the only tanks that have the problem are the ones with fluval stratum... Anyone had this issue before?

  18. Hello, I recently set up 3 tanks, one is a 40g breeder, another is a 10g and the other a 5g... they have been set up four about two months, and the five gal for about a month. I have had cloudy water ever since I set them up, no matter how long I wait or how many water changes I do, it wont go away, its literally so milky I cant see through it... I have another three 10 gallon tanks and they are good, but the cloudy tanks are the ones with fluval stratum, maybe something to do with the substrate? Stocking is not too crazy, in the 40 gal we have some neons, embers, one goldfish that is still a baby, couple of mollies, two gouramis, anyways pretty peaceful environment, and in the 10 gal I keep shrimp (roughly 7 or so, i cant even see them to count and I just started since im trying to get a colony...) and in the 5 gal one female betta, like I said, all cloudy, and it doesnt go away after weeks and weeks, I have a hob on the 40gal and sponge filters in the 10 and 5 gal... filters are not crazy strong so they dont disturb the substrate, I honestly dont know what to do anymore... I thought it was a cycling issue but they have been cycled and they are all planted.. thanks in advance
