Jaydela
Hello all! I am new here and new to owning fish. We have a small 5 gallon tank I got for my daughter with 2 male guppies and 2 small shrimp. They have all been thriving and doing amazing until this morning I went to turn on their lights and realized one of the guppies was face down with a piece missing from his take a chunk missing from his stomach? My daughter was heartbroken but I don’t want to replace him and it happen again. Does anyone know why this could have happened?
TOtrees
Hi sorry for this sad outcome. What you're describing sounds like damage after death, not an act of predation or hunting. Eg the guppy died, and the shrimps (or possibly the other guppy) picked at it. Very common. How long have you had the tank/fish, and are you changing water while the tank "cycles"? Can you describe your filtration? Do you use dechlorinator? Can you describe how much you are feeding? Overfeeding fish is SUPER common among new keepers. With 2 guppies and 2 shrimps, you need only the teeniest, tiniest, smallest pinch of food. Not even every day.
