Breeding ranchu goldfish

Hi, just wanted to talk about a future breeding project.

I want to breed ranchus and specifically breed water ink ranchus. They are white ranchus with blue backs and a few black spots. They are nacreous scale type. Some call them blue base calicos, but the type i want to breed is more specific. I also want to try my hand at breeding dwarf ranchus. I suspect that breeding the smallest fry together will result in smaller adult fish over time.

hi swissaquarist,

I have 2 ranchu, they aren't the type I want to breed, they are also both female. I actually got them from a local fish store. they have grown since then, its been a year. they bred for me with a black ranchu i had last spring. lost the black ranchu to illness, fugal infection. Its a long term project. maybe spring 2024 ill be able to start on it hopefully.

Yeah i have 3 books on the subject. One is old and kinda like a crash course on Mendelian genetics! I think ive watched every possible video on youtube about goldfish breeding. I wish there was more! I did read a blog about a guy who was trying to breed milk cow ranchu and those are very similar to the type im trying to breed and he said they can breed true sometimes. I haven't found anything on breeding a dwarf variant.
