Sadly goldfish is not a good tank member to most community tanks and has very few tankmates that you can keep them with, due to them trying to eat everything and preferring different water parameters than most community fish. I would not keep a goldfish with any of these options, they would surely try to eat any of them tbh, and mystery snails and kuhlis would prefer warmer temps while hillstreams would want high flow which are both bad for goldfish.

@knee wouldnt rams may hurt mystery snails? I’ve never kept them together but antennas may be too tempting

I was planning on moving the loaches and snail to another tank, if the goldfish worked out, but it didn’t- so they’re staying. 😊

@Lennie they don’t care for them that much and I keep 10 rams. Never seen the rams even touch the snails unless they have eggs. The swordtails are worse on the mystery snails because they don’t just bite the antenna, they would bite whatever flesh is exposed. I’m actually giving them away for that reason. I love mystery snails more than swords 😂

@Sharelleshobbies I would suggest buying them from a store local to you. That’s to make the transition easier since you’d most likely have the same or at least similar water with your LFS.

I don’t think I’ve seen them locally, but maybe I’ll have to watch for them.

Do you have any experience with Bolivian Rams? They're a very peaceful dwarf cichlid that will do well with the kuhlis, hillstream and mystery snail. You can get one or a pair in the 36 and get some schooling/shoaling fish. I prefer rasboras because they are more active compared to some more popular tetras (neon, ember).

Thanks so much for looking into this for me! This is a wonderful suggestion. I don’t have experience with rams but I will look into it. Do you have any recommendations for purchasing rams?

Is this 13 inches front to back and 19 inches top to bottom?

Do you want one or two fish only or a community of some small fishes with a centerpiece fish?

Yes.  19 inches from top to bottom.

a centerpiece fish with a community.

something with kuhli loaches, Hillstream loach, and mystery snail.

    Definitely too small for goldfish.

What are the dimensions of the tank? It'll be easier to determine what kind of fish can go in with the dimensions

Figured that would be the answer, but we had to dream lol.

30 inches long, 13 inches wide, and 19 inches deep.

  5. update: thanks for the help everyone! I am glad I reached out before changing my whole setup.  I am putting Ranchu Goldfish on my “someday” list. When we get a bigger house with space for a larger tank ☺️😅

Hey there! My daughter and I fell in love with the adorable ranchu goldfish.  They are so cute! I’ve done lots of research and I’m thinking about converting my 36 gallon tank to hold two of them. The problem is that I know that they require lots of work with water changes and extra filtration, especially with smaller tanks. My question is- before I invest $100+ for a couple 3” ones- is 36 gallons too small?? Will it be a headache?? If it wouldn’t be a good fit- what are some friendly fish that have fun personalities??  No livebearers please. After the headache of dealing with hundreds of baby guppies, I don’t want to go that route again.  Thanks for all the help.

  6. Alright, my fish are shipped and will be here soon!  I just had a few last questions regarding the quarantine tank and the sponge filter.  I've never used a quarantine tank, so I'm a little nervous.  So, for background, about a month ago I set up my new tank and started to cycle it.  It went through the nitrogen cycle and grew lots of algae, and my plants are growing like crazy.  I added some cherry shrimp a couple weeks ago, and they are fat and sassy- doing well.  One even molted yesterday!  The water is holding up with consistent readings for the past couple weeks- it's perfect. Ammonia 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 25 (I have plants and have been using Easy Green- hence the nitrates).  Anyways- about 3 weeks ago I added a small sponge filter to use in future quarantine tanks.  My water responded positively to this new addition and got much better readings very quickly.  My question is this: will this little filter have enough bacteria on it after 3 weeks?  I'm a little nervous as I worked so hard to get my tank to where it is now, but it would be sad if my QT wasn't quite right, and I lost some fish.  Would it be okay to squish my main filter sponge in the QT water to add more bacteria?

Exciting to get these new fish! I'd love to learn what color / pattern caught your fancy.

    I got a surprise mix! I can't wait to see them. 😃

    (1) Are you adding these guppies to an already established aquarium with lots of stock you've invested in a lot already? Or are these fish starting out a new tank for you? If you are really concerned about the outside possibility of cross-contaminating your current stock, then there is good grounds for medication. However, if they're new to a tank, I think you can just start them outright without meds and watch them carefully for a few weeks. IF you see any worrying signs, it's not wrong to run the med trio. But it's not always essential. I also like to ask the seller what the source of the Guppies is. Are they imported? Locally bred? Have they ever medicated them? etc.

These will be my second edition to my newly cycled tank.  I've got 4 cherry shrimp in it for now- to clean up the algae- and they are fat and sassy. 😃

    (2) If you run the Med-Trio, you could lightly feed while the fish undergo treatment. Just feed once a day and no more than they scarf up very quickly as you watch. I'd choose something like Xtreme Krill Flakes that are not "dirty" in your QT setup. Beware that an insufficiently cycled QT can be more deadly than any possible ailment guppies come with. I have lost a number of fish for that reason before.

I am a bit worried about that.  I've put my extra sponge filter in the QT.  Its been in my cycled tank for a few weeks so I hope it has enough beneficial bacteria.  I'll be keeping a close eye on it.  Maybe I'll add some more beneficial bacteria for good measure.

I'd say it's a judgement call. When the fish are in the tank for say half an hour, how do they look? If they look good. I'd work on getting food into them the next day or two. Then I'd follow up with a paracleanse.

If they look rough when they arrive, medication may be the best action. The problem with diseases is they aren't all the same, Ich for instance usually takes 7+ days to kill a fish. Where a fast moving bacteria can kill fish in a matter of hours.

Sounds reasonable to me. 😃 thank you.

  8. Hey there! I’m expecting an order from Twin Cities Guppies this week, and I have a few questions.  I’ve had fish in the past, but I am new to buying fish online as well as using a quarantine tank + meds. My biggest question: is there anything I need to do differently when my fish are shipped? My concern is that the fish will have already gone without food for a few days and then a week without food during the med trio- isn’t that too long?  When should I feed them? How long can they go without and be okay? Are guppies sensitive to meds at all? What day should I feed them after receiving and acclimating them?  Should I hold off on the meds for a few days?

    thank you!!

I should add that these are the resources that I’ve been using to get my quarantine tank ready^^

The first thing everyone new needs to learn in this hobby is patience. If you do this too quickly, being inexperienced you risk losing all your fish.

If you choose to do a fish-in cycle which is what you are doing if you add fish now the .5 of ammonia will cause ammonia burn, stress and likely fish deaths. So in order to try and prevent that you'd have to do water tests and water changes every. single. day until you see Nitrates and zero ammonia and nitrites. I don't recommend this method for new hobbyists.

I'd recommend watching this video that simplifies tank cycling.

I think I’ve watched this before- but I’ll watch again. ☺️

We have had fish before for several years- but we didn’t know anything and didn’t test, cycle or anything.👎🏻 So I still consider myself a newbie. We didn’t lose many fish though… in fact, we had lots and lots of Molly babies we had to give away…. but I want to do it better this time.  I’ve got a bigger tank, live plants, beneficial bacteria, a quarantine tank setup, testing kits… etc 😄

If I add fish I will definitely do lots of water changes.  We are starting to see a little algae so I was hoping to add something to help with that while we wait for things to settle.  I don’t plan on overwhelming my tank with a lot of fish at first.  Gradually over the next few months.  Our budget has forced us to be patient- and do things this way regardless of our excitement.

I’m trying to sort through a lot of information, so thanks for being patient with me. 🙂

if you want to add fish before the tank has "cycled", you will need to add a source of bacteria to the tank. this can come from a filter or hardscape from an established aquarium, or a bottled bacteria like stresszyme7 or fluval cycle. the bacteria is what is in a tank that helps break down waste, and ammonia, and without it it can be difficult to keep fish alive. there's more than 1 way to establish beneficial bacteria in a tank, but without it you will be up against a big struggle.

ill add, plants are very helpful towards getting a tank established, so you are at least a step in the right direction.

Oh good- I did add some beneficial bacteria + plants

Don't add fish until your tank is cycled or you risk losing fish and/or upsetting the cycle. 🙂

Okay- I guess I’m in it for the long haul 😂. I didn’t mean to do a fishless cycle but we just don’t know what kind of fish we want yet…

Hi there @Sharelleshobbies welcome to the hobby. Appearance of ammonia and nitrites are a good thing when doing a fishless cycle. No water changes necessary. We're waiting for that magical moment when your tests are zero ammonia and nitrites and a little bit of Nitrates anywhere between 5 and 20.

And if we decide to add some fish soon? It’s just been put together in the past couple days and I’m hoping to add something soon.

  13. Hey there! I’m new.  We just got a new tank- it’s 36 gallons.  We don’t have any fish yet, but we have a few plants.  I just tested my water and was surprised to find .50 ppm ammonia.  What do I do with this information? I’ve watched loads of videos, joined the YouTube membership- but I’m just not sure what to do when my levels are up in any of the tests while ‘cycling’.  I’m assuming I do a water change? 25%? Or more?

Here are the levels of my *tank (after a couple days started with API Quick Start and API Stress Coat Water Conditioner, and Easy Green + root tabs):

    ph 7.4

    Ammonia .50 ppm

    nitrite 0

    nitrate 0

    this is our tap water:

    ph 7.4

    Ammonia 0

    nitrite 0

    nitrate 0

*we have aquarium gravel and plant substrate too

If you have a ‘for dummies’ link for what to do about different levels- that would be great as well.

thanks for your patience as I learn this new hobby ☺️
