  1. The only change I made was the addition of a bristlenosed pleco that was given to us from my Nephew who has a breeding pair.

The filter is a Fluval U2 that I clean out the filters about once a month. I don’t really do much for water changes. I take out a few gallons, just enough to rinse out the filters. The Air stone is a 4 inch bar that is a carry over from when I was cycling the tank. My wife likes the bubbles.

Here are my light values. I probably should change them a bit.

  2. This is a 29 gallon planted tank. It’s been up and running since February and is coming along very well. I am running a Fluval Plant 3.0. Light and I really like the ability to change the light parameters.

Lately I have been dealing with this algae growth in only the upper third of the tank. My water parameters are all great with the nitrates running a little over 20ppm but. It quite 30ppm.

    any suggestions?

That's baffling, 'cuz you might only have about 20 gallons of water in that system with all the substrate and other hardscape. 3ml would be over dosing for EG. Something is eating it up.

Yes I agree. That’s why I am asking what is going on. Tomorrow morning I will test again with my API master kit and see where we are at.

My Pogostemon Stalletus Octopus grows way faster than my Bacopa Carolinian. If I don't trim my PSO at least every other week it will fill the entire tank.

My PSO is also my fastest growing plant. The Bacopa doesn’t do much of anything.

One bacopa caroliana/monnieri won't consume that much nitrate that quickly, and even for 6 water sprites that would be a shocker. But, if they're growing fast and huge, maybe it's possible. But, those are the two fastest plants you've got.

Thanks for all your help and info. It’s definitely helping me learn.

I forgot to tell you I am dosing 3 squirts of easy green every other day. (29 gallon tank).

I'd suggest stopping the Prime and keeping it on hand in case you have a spike in ammonia or nitrIte. Just switch to a basic dechlorinator, unless you have zero chlorine/chloramine in your source water.

18 tiny plants? Or, 18 gargantuan plants? Fast growing stems or slow growing buces and anubias? Do you have any pothos rooted in your filter? If you have 18 large fast growers, or even a single pothos, that could be your culprit.

And, how much Easy Green are you dosing, and how frequently?

    I have…

6 Water Sprite (1 is floating)

    2 Amazon Sword

    2 Monte Carlo ground cover

    1 Java Fern Windelov

    1 Dwarf Lilly

    2 Red Flame Sword

    2 Cryptocoryne Lutea

    1 Pogostemon Stalletus Octopus

    1 Bacopa Carolinian

I will take your advice on not using the Prime

Prime should not impact nitrate availability to plants. But, i question the use of Prime as a daily water conditioner unless you have ammonia and nitrites in your source water. I like to lean toward the "fewer chemicals are better" end of the spectrum.

How heavily planted are your tanks? Are you plants just consuming the nitrates faster than you supply them? Are you removing them with water changes? Do you use Purigen in your filter?

I would think there might be other reasons why nitrates are tough to keep up while dosing.

Thanks for the reply. I have also been questioning why I use prime. I don’t have any ammonia or nitrite in my water source. I was told to use prime when I was cycling my tank and I just never stopped. I stopped doing water changes about 3 weeks ago and have just been adding water due to evaporation. Each time I add water I use Prime except for yesterday when I used Top Fin conditioner. My water chemistry seems to be fine except I have what I would consider low nitrates at between 0 and 5 ppm.  I agree with your fewer chemicals theory.

As a side note I was using Purigen to keep the tannin coloration out of the tank but I took that out about 3 weeks ago and decided to just not use it anymore.

I have about 18 plants in the 29 gallon tank at the moment.

  7. I have a 29 gallon planted tank. Everything seems to be moving along pretty good. I am struggling a bit with getting my nitrates up to around 30.
Are water conditioners making this hard for me?  I usually use Prime but my question is - Is the Prime keeping me from getting my nitrates up so the plants can benefit from them?  Or is it just that my plants are sucking them out faster than I can raise them using Easy Green?

I am thinking about switching to a different conditioner.

let me see if I can find it and send a screenshot or a cory video. 🙂

it should start at the time right when Cory is talking about that feature.

Thanks. I am. It sure how I missed that. I do appreciate your help.

Bentley Pascoe on YouTube had a plant 3.0 guide that is where I'd tell anyone to start. Best of luck.

Lid means some refraction. It's best to not have a lid but obviously it means the light is going to take some water and that the watersports on the light (or the lid) will make it less effective. I always run lids and just try to keep them clean.

Thanks !  I did run across Bentley’s video series and I have enjoyed them.

  10. I have a question. I have noticed that a lot of videos and photos of tanks with the Plant 3.0 do not have glass lids or tops on the aquarium at all. We do use a lid, mostly because many years ago we had a reef tank and we would find fish on the floor every now and then. My wife is very nervous about that happening now so I am losing the battle about taking it off. So here is the question. Will the 3.0 be as effective going through the glass or is it best to just have it without a lid?

  11. I have had this piece of wood in my tank for about a month now. It is Mopani Wood that was purchased from my local pet shop. I have noticed that a layer of fuzz has grown on top of it. Is this normal?

@Waricks, even with massive tannins, I haven’t pushed my lights past 50%.

Thanks that is good info!  My I ask which light you are using. I am researching lights right now as I want to upgrade. Right now I am seriously considering the Fluval Plant 3.0.

I am not a fan of Purigen. As far as I can tell, it is composed of microplastics, which can only be reset with a risky bleach treatment. If you are using wood, enjoy the tannins.

Thank you for this. I am contemplating getting rid of the purigen and going back to standard filtration. My concern with the tannins is that the darker water blocks the light that the plants need.

Maybe the tannins have leached out now and I can go without the purigen.

  14. I have a 29 gallon planted tank that has a couple chunks of wood. I soaked the wood for two weeks changing the water every day. When it came time to add the wood to the tank I didn’t notice any color change to the soaking water. A few days after the wood went in the tank the water was pretty dark from the wood. I spoke with my local fish store and they recommended the use of purigen in my filter. It did an amazing job and the tank remains crystal clear.

my question is - Will the use of purigen effect my plants?

That is exactly how mine look for a few months when they were grown above water. All these little guys with fuzzy roots are baby plants. Gently pluck them and secure them where you want them. I just drop mine in with a plant weight cut to size.

Thanks again!! Now I feel like it is doing good. I think I will take your advice and pull off those babies!
