Omg we have CPD babies. I only counted two. If you squint you can see them in the video 😂. The photo here is of the tank they’re in… and of course it is in desperate need of a water change/ trim but now I’m afraid to lose the babies if I do!

Sooo I did a water change after all and trimmed the jungle of water wisteria and cleared almost all my floating plants. The babies seem to hang out on the left side top of the tank so I didn’t really trim that side. I was able to confirm both babies were alive post water change!

    Wow! Luck or on purpose?

Luck! I’m always startled because I’m literally not trying and honestly neglecting my tanks lol. But I suppose by me neglecting the tank it’s giving them a chance to survive.

What... Why aren't you supposed to split them?

Cory explains it better in the stream but the abridged version is that it can get too complicated to achieve the appropriate air output when it’s split 4 times.

  5. Hey guys! I just wanted to share my experience so far with my betta Salvador…

I bought him from a cup at petsmart and rehabbed him to join my 20 gal long community tank. Everything was going swimmingly (pun intended) until I noticed a couple of my ember tetras nipping at his long lustrous fins. It became incessant. Poor Salvador was relegated to hiding, only braving the open water for meal time.

I thought I found a solution by swapping him into a 14 gallon cube tank with corydoras, who I knew would mind their manners. I put extra rest spots and hides in the tank for him acknowledging the taller profile, but alas, seemingly over night his fins became a tattered remnant of what once was.

Determined to restore him to his full glory I decided to assemble what I call a betta quarantine tank: Fake decor, bare bottom 5 gallon tank. Not the most beautiful of aqua-scapes but most importantly, bountiful resting spots and no cohabitants.

And now we wait… wait to see if my suspicions of him fin nipping were correct. Wait to see if he was quite literally crumbling under his own weight. Wait to see if living the solo life is all he had hoped for. Even if it becomes a long term lease of this betta quarantine tank it will be worth it to see him recover to his fullest extent.

    Thanks for reading my musings!

p.s. I may strongly consider plakats for all future bettas 😆

It's important to remember that with an established tank there is a lot more for fish to eat than what we add .

Yes this is a good point! I remember now a video or live stream once of Cory mentioning that fish are always eating. Be it detritus worms, scuds, algae or whatever… but good point about the quarantine tanks… they don’t have much in the way of little snacks lol.

  7. Maybe post a picture of your shrimp so we can confirm that they are actually amano shrimp. Some species of shrimp could be mistaken for them and actually be quite aggressive. I have many many amano shrimp and the closest they've come to this sort of behavior is when they try to snatch food away from other fish. I second the comment to target feed them. Twice a week I drop shrimp/snail food for them and the rest of the time I let them scavenge on uneaten fish food and of course algae.

Alternatively you could buy an auto feeder and schedule it to fedd them once a day in the morning when the lights are on.

I would consider this however I have lids on all my tanks and I have 7 tanks plus a quarantine tank.... not sure I can justify spending money on 8 auto feeders!

  9. Hey guys! In relation to my previous post stating that I am an over feeder… I was curious to know who feeds their fish twice daily. (I currently feed once daily).

I’ve been watching a YouTube channel of an aquatic veterinarian and she recommends feeding twice daily (and cautioned about over feeding as a health concern).

I’d like to start feeding twice but on weekdays I get up at 5:30am and am pretty rushed to get out the door. I’d hate to turn the lights on that early… is it ok to feed in the dark? Will they still eat or should I try to break up my lighting schedule? What’s everyone’s opinion?

    Thanks guys!

  10. Soo I did what fish keepers are always cautioned against… I impulse bought 6 Pseudomugil gertrudae. I went to the fish store looking for CPD’s and ended up with these adorable doofuses. Does anyone keep these? Any advice? I plan to put them in my 14 gal cube with habrosus corydoras, various snails and amano shrimp.
I attached a internet photo of them because mine are so fast I just get blurry yellow smudges in my photos 😂

  11. I have one tank with a dwarf aquarium lily and another tank with a tiger lotus. Dwarf lily tank has been up for over two years and I get TONS of lily pads. I do have to trim them back a bit because they will shade out all the other plants in the tank. Just try to trim the stem as close to the base of the plant as possible. My tiger lotus on the other hand is a year old and I've maybe gotten one or two lily pads total so I haven't really needed to trim back much!

  12. In my exerience over feeding ferts should not hurt your plants at all... but you most likely will grow a ton of algae. Of course lighting also plays a factor in how fast/much algae will grow but my best advice is to just start of dosing once weekly and use the aquarium co op test strips before each dose to see what the nitrate level is. This will help guide your dosing frequency. I tend to keep heavily planted tanks with low light plants, but I've needed to start dosing some tanks twice weekly because some plants started showing deficiencies and after a week my nitrates were testing near 0ppm.

  13. I'm so sorry! I had a string of bad luck with bettas so I know exactly how you feel. I had 2 bettas get what I suspect was dropsy back to back... I tried everything to save them. They are so hardy but at the same time can be so sensitive. I absolutely love bettas but after these two even I'm thinking of switching gears for a bit and try some smaller schooling fish. BUT even so I still have 5 bettas lol... they can break your heart but they are such cool fish in my opinion! Chin up!

Most likely oxygen or CO2 plants respire and occasionally pearl with various waste gases. My algaes do this occasionally in the morning when the sun first hits the tank. Quite beautiful, completely harmless.

Is it odd that it’s constant? It doesn’t seem to upset the fish much but it makes the water look cloudy since the bubbles are very fine and just float about in the current.

  15. I have one tank that consistently has these tiny bubbles floating around… any clue as to what they are and why I don’t have them in any other tanks? I do not run C02 and as you can tell the main plants in there is water wisteria and salvinia floaters. I only run a sponge filter and dose easy green and flourish advance twice weekly. This is the same regimen as my other tanks that do not have these bubbles.

If it were me, I’d go for it. I’d probably try a male Betta Imbellis because of their beauty. Females of this species are not necessarily docile. They can be jumpers.

Thanks for the advice! I do have a tight fitting lid because I had a couple amano shrimp go on walkabout. But I’m willing to give it a go with a male! I have a back up 5 gallon tank should things go sideways.

  17. I have a 20 gallon long with 6 green fire tetras and 14 ember tetras... I was considering putting a female betta in with them but wonder if the tank is too busy for an aggressive or semi aggressive fish... then I saw this mystical "friendly betta" and became curious lol

  18. I noticed at my fish store they have started stocking betta imbellis... but they are sold as "friendly bettas". Has anyone ever heard this before? Is this shady marketing or is this particular species of betta actually more friendly? I've read some contradicting information so far on the inter-webs and wondered what everyone's opinion is!

    Thanks!
