  1. So I bought water from a filter media at the start which had some beneficial bacteria.

I dosed it with ammonia., the powdered one.

I am using gravel., from Petco.

I have the hang on back filter with bio balls and sponge.

the water temperature avg around 78-80

i am attaching a picture. Just so if it helps.

Answers to these questions will help me help you...

How are you attempting to perform this fishless cycle?

    What is your ammonia source?

Have you dosed with any supplemental "live" bacteria?

What kind of substrate are you using?

What type of filter and filter media?

    What is the water temperature?

6 weeks in, without introduction of beneficial bacteria from another source, especially at lower water temperatures , is not a long time.

  2. So this is my new aquarium I am setting up., started putting water and everything on March 21st. Still waiting for the cycle to complete before adding fish. This week on Monday I got the ordered package from aquarium coop website and I got this bulb plant for which I put in the gravel on Monday. Today it shows something coming out from the side., should I flip the bulb or wait for it to sprout a bit more? I also plan on adding water sprite., any thoughts on that? Here are the few pictures.

    any suggestions are appreciated.

I don't think there is much con here because honestly a sponge filter is more than enough if you don't overstock the tank. There is a point of diminishing returns which scale shifts with the size tank. A 10 gallon tank  shouldn't require more than a sponge filter. Is the Fluval 20 you are referencing the HOB (hang on back)? because if so, I would honestly skip the sponge filter and just run that to save space in such a small aquarium.  (ive never heard of a Fluval 20 filter tbh). An Aquaclear 20 yes. Also you wouldn't need an air-stone if you are running a sponge filter, it technically does the exact thing the air-stone does (move water and oxygenate).

Yes, the fluval 20 is a HOB. I actually bought it from petco when I bought the tank,  but I met a guy who is following Cory from a year and learned a lot from his videos. So he told me to have this for the bacteria to grow until the intial cycle and just continue having it on the other side of the fluval filter. So that's what I am doing, but had a doubt and posted on the forum.

  4. As usual like others I bought the gravel from petco, and i bought the 20lb one. Which I cannot return now. I dont want to spend another 20$ on the dirt substrate so I am using the gravel. I ordered the bulb plant for now and waiting for it to get shipped. Could you suggest any plants that can grow in a 10 gallon tank in where I am planning to have few small guppies and platy around 5.

    Any suggestions are welcomed.
