Project Leads
The Fishgineer
We each bring different strengths to our hobby. My partner is good with her hands, so I will refer to her as The Fishgineer throughout this build. The Fishgineer will be taking lead on “the build” and has final decision making power on all things electrical, plumbing, filtration and contractor-related.
The NeoNerd
I, NeoNerd, usually occupy myself with breeding, raising, and general fish husbandry since I get the most enjoyment from that. For this project, I will be taking lead on “the move” and documentation on the forum.

My partner and I are a freshwater aquarium obsessed COUPLE. Yeah, you read that right. We both love keeping fish, which means in our household it’s double the hobby, double the tanks, and double the opinions on water changes.
Over the past year we have outgrown our downtown apartment and have purchased a new home. Which means an epic fish apartment move and a new 842 sq ft basement dedicated to this amazing hobby.
We have a closing date range of mid-Sept to October, so naturally all we care about is getting our current tanks moved and building out the new fish space.
I am hoping to share this journey with you all by providing updates as they happen. We are true Nerms that are balancing full time jobs and other responsibilities, but always find our hands in a fish tank (or a few fishtanks) at the end of the day.

Hi Aldyrin, what temperature do you run your tank? When is the last time you saw the snail eating on something - piece of zucchini/algae wafer/etc that you put in there specifically for your mystery snail? In my experience, it is easy to not feed these guys enough, so could be a reason for the lethargic behavior.

Hi, have you seen it moving in a "non-leg" way? If so, then it might be a parasite (perhaps Holtodrilus Truncates?) that you make quick work out of with a salt bath which won't hurt the shrimp. Method I use below. Coop sells Fritz aquarium salt if you need some.
Salt Bath Method:
- Take 1 tablespoon of salt and add it to 1 – 5 cups of aquarium water.
- Dissolve the salt in the water by stirring it.

When it is completely dissolved, take the infected shrimp out of your tank and put it into the cup for about 30-60 seconds.
Note: Due to the size of the worms it is easy to see all of them fall off the shrimp, and it happens in less than a minute. - Then remove the shrimp and put it back in your aquarium.

In my experience, darker colored neos are easier to cull & sort under bright light and light substrate such as sand or crushed coral. I second Cory in keeping the "B" team shrimp in a separate tank and seeing if they mature into the color you are looking for (or breed amongst each other and kick out the right colored shrimplets that you can consider reintroducing into the main colony).

Without knowing your water parameters and water change schedule it's tough to say for sure. My first thought would be that they might have hit a critical mass in the tank and are now competing for the calcium in the water? Good calcium supplements would be crushed coral, vegetables with calcium as food, or this product https://www.aquariumcoop.com/products/wonder-shell

I routinely spawn Juli corydoras in my red rili colony (the shrimp eat a TON) in a 20 gal long tank. I do pull the cory eggs after they spawn, but I have had some eggs stay behind and hatch naturally. So the shrimp must not be eating the viable ones.
