  1. For Fundulus and Lucania, I like to put a pair in a 10 gal. Full of hornwort for just short of a week, then remove the adults and feed fry foods to the tank.

Also, don't keep the tank too clean. You want some infusoria and micro-crustaceans in the tank. Leaf litter helps.

You're Bluefins will multiply in a heavily planted tank even without removing the adults or eggs, but there won't be near as many.

  2. G. metallicus is such a cool fish,  I'm currently keeping both strains. They really like algae in their diet. If you find yourself overrun with fry, dropping the the temperature to around 70°F won't hurt the fish, but pretty much brings drops to a halt until the temperature rises again (at least with mine).

  3. Golden Topminnows, Blufin Killifish, Rainbow Shiners, Least Killifish, and Florida Flagfish are all readily available, and fine in smaller tanks. Some of the more unusual species can be bought from a couple of online NANF specialty stores. The other option is to collect your own, just be aware of the local laws.

  4. Bluefin Killifish, Golden Topminnows, Bluespotted Sunfish, Red Shiners (only two), a Sand Shiner, Rainbow Shiners, Orangethroat Darters, Central Stonerollers, Wild Sailfin Mollies, and three small Bristlenose Plecos. Maybe a bit overstocked, but so far it's been stable.

  5. I haven't really noticed much jumping with my Limia nigrofasciata, but if you're concerned about it, add some floating plants. I would definitely not recommend keeping Limia and mollies together, due to the possibility of hybridization, but I don't think they'd hybridize with platies.

  6. The frogs are Gray Treefrogs, they pose little to no threat to your fish. However, Bullfrogs, Leopard Frogs, and other species of large frog, as well as Garter Snakes, and Water Snakes, should be removed immediately. Unfortunately, I can't help much on the snail. Maybe a picture in the sunlight would help?

  7. Maybe a pair of Apistos? If it were me, it would have either Enneacanthus sunfish, Bluefin Killifish, one of the Elassoma spp., one of the smaller Fundulus spp., darters, Pteronotropis shiners, or some species of wild livebearer in it, but I know those aren't everyone's cup of tea.

  8. A 10 gal. With 4 feeder goldfish I rescued from one of our stock tanks one fall. Hob, airstone, no plants. Somehow they survived for several years before the power went out during a winter storm and killed two of them, the other two went back out to a stock tank that spring, and must have run into a raccoon. The tank then housed various aquatic insects and snails for several years until I took a 2 or 3 year break before getting back into the hobby in the fall of 2020.

  9. Some other small sunfish to consider would be Orangespotted or Bantam Sunfish. Both are small and considered relatively peaceful.

I personally have a small pair of Bluespotted Sunfish living in a 20L community tank, and I absolutely love them in there

  10. I've personally had success keeping Pteronotropis shiners, Bluefin Killifish, Golden Topminnows, Bluespotted Sunfish, small Darters, and Gambusia in 10 gal. Tanks. Obviously you can't do all those in one tank, but there's plenty of room for 1-2 Bluespotted Sunfish and a school of Pteronotropis or Bluefins if you want a community tank

Hey, think I can add my question here:

I have a tank at my work desk (as part of going back to the office) and it is the 15 Gallon Aqueon Column Tank with no heater (13" x 13" x 19" and temp is kept at 70f in my office) with lots of anubias, a huge amazon sword, watersprite, and water lettuce. I'd like hardy fish so I'm thinking a solo female FFF (so a FFFF? 😄) and 5 to 7 longfin white clouds. Thoughts on this stocking combination?

I personally wouldn't recommend that combo, flagfish are bad fin-nippers and a 15 gal. Column tank really doesn't leave much room for the white clouds to escape. If you're dead set on the flagfish, I'd suggest one of the short finned types of white cloud, or bluefin killifish.

  12. Bluefin Killifish are a great tub fish! But definitely don't put them in the same tub as anything you're trying to breed, they are voracious fry and egg eaters. That being said, you will likely have success breeding the bluefins, I put 6 adults in a 25 gallon tub last June, and removed around 90 fish in September.

  13. Paradise Fish are cool! My brother and I have been working on a line of dark blue, long-finned, crowntail Paradise Fish for a couple of years now.

The only thing I might caution about with the barbs, is that they might fin nip. But I've never personally kept them, so I can't say for sure.

  14. In my personal experience. Zebra Danios, White Clouds, Bluefin Killifish, Wild Guppies, and Golden topminnows get along with Paradise Fish, but I have heard of success with Gold Barbs. I've also noticed that Paradise Fish don't seem to be as aggressive as most people say they are, but that could just be the line I've worked with.
