Meh, I wouldn't upgrade a 40 breeder unless it was a 75.  The dimensions of 55 and 60 are vomit to me.

Confuses the hell out of me why they make large tanks tall and narrow.  What is it for, a billion nano fish?

Once my fish get to 6 inches each, I'll upgrade to a 75 with a 2nd canister.

And on the 75, I'll do same with 40, no plants.  I grow bamboo using a Aquaclear 50 with nothing in it but ceramic biomedia and the bamboo, on a very slow flow.  The filtration is from a Fluval 407.  Future plan for next year when upgrade to 75 is to add probably another Fluval 407.  For the 75, probably upgrade the Aquaclear to a 110 to do the exact same thing, just add more bamboo 😄

Also I think goldfish are seriously the most underrated fish.  They are adorable, and constantly moving, doing weird things.  One of my Jikan spent the afternoon swimming downward against the flow of my air stone.  And I didn't know they were such sociable fish, they are constantly following each other, bumping into each other, and just being clowns.

I know with larger fish tanks, people really are focused on cichlids or carnivorous fish.  But I think fancy goldfish may just be the best fish for a tank from 40-75 if you are just keeping 3-5 of them.  Don't do 4, 4 remember = death.

I used the 60gallon because I got it for the cost of "come get it" and figured it was time for the larger water volume. But yes I agree, the foot print is weirdly narrow for the size if the tank.

If it's legal in your area, elodea and cabomba love colder water and grow fast enough to allow grazing. I believe people have also had success with emergent plants such as pothos and lucky bamboo.

I thought anubias would be safe but my goldfish ate the entire plant rhizome and all. It was a very healthy 3 foot long plant, still a little salty about that.

Poor anubis. My fancies ravaged 2 decent sized Amazon swords.

  3. I honestly couldn't tell you how much salt I added initially. Bought a 40lb bucket of marine salt and dumped approximately 2/3 of it into the tub. And I haven't actually checked the temp of the tub. It just kind of sits there and does it's own thing.

  4. I've seen the videos about Cory's outdoor tub of brine shrimp. I've recently moved into a house so I have the opportunity to setup a couple of tubs outside. My question is . . . I live in HOT Arizona. How temperature sensitive is/are brine shrimp?

  5. I'm slowly planning for a future fish room. I've got the ideas behind central air and central water fill for auto water changing. What about central Co2? One large tank hard plumbed around the room to multiple regulators?

  6. So as much as I want to order all of my plants from the Co-op . . . I'm wanting to buy a rather large volume. What is the best place to get jungle val and Amazon swords (in bulk?) Or would the coop be able to work out a "your order is this big here's a discount" kind of deal?

  7. Would the effect be more or less flow (dependant on which impeller)? If I wanted a 70 (that I already have) to flow like a 110 . . . Buy a $10 impeller and I end up with a 110 in a smaller box?

  8. Do all AquaClears use the same motor? Are impellers interchangeable? I.e. Would an impeller from a 110 in a 70 up the flow of the 70? Would an impeller from a 50 in a 110 slow down flow while maintaining the volume of the 110?
