Welcome! I took a pretty long break after being really into it in the 90s, all freshwater. Cichlids and oscars back then, broader community now. Clown Loaches are a big favorite for me too (and frontosas) but I haven't had a large enough tank for them yet. The 75s might be, but they are going to be mostly south americans.

Try and catch one of the older YT videos from the Coop so you can see Cory's 800gallon when he had it packed with tiger barbs, clown loaches, etc as pals for his Mbu puffer Ladybird. There was one livestream in particular where I had a hard time paying attention because I was mesmerized by this MONSTER clown loach in there - it must have been a foot long and chonky! He mostly sat in one spot while the smaller ones derped around him for ages.

I think the biggest change since I came back is better lighting and ease of keeping an amazing planted tank. No more fake plants for me! Cool DIY CO2 systems to support that plant growth, wifi outlets, apps to manage lighting, water change systems, etc. And this community - I was on forums back in the 90s, and this feels a lot like a bit of the interwebs that still feels good. 🙂

    Thanks for the info .....

  2. Hello everyone I'm TUCCI and excited to join. I've already been posting some thread discussions and getting real good feedback. I got away from aquariums for close to a decade since moving here from Arizona. I've had fresh and Salt tanks with fresh being my favorite (specifically the Monster fish variety). I'm slowly putting together 75 display and needed to reorient myself to whats been going on in my absence.

My favorite fish are clownloaches and I want a full complement of them with a handful of Frontosas. Where I'm going to get the Fronts from, I haven't figured out yet but hey thats what I've got this Forum for!! Finding great looking Clowns is also a quandary but I'm taking it slow (whats the hurry right?). Getting the tank setup and cycling it without stock is step 2. See everyone out there.....Cheers

Yes, I forget all the details now I will look them up.   I think I purchased enough to mix in a gallon of RO/DI  and it treated some crazy amount.  And all that for like 6 or 7 dollars.

One gallon can treat 37,850 gallons.  The cost is under $4.00

I'm betting most aquarium use products have their origins in the commercial sector. If one takes the time to investigate the main ingredients, you can trace it back and save a ton of cheddar.

I use a small pond pump with a 1/2" ID line because that is what I had.  The pump is in a 5 gallon bucket.  I've seen on line, valves with barbed fittings on one end. That would make it a little nicer and potentially eliminate the hose clamp.  My purpose in building it was to eliminate the need to lift 5 gallon water jugs over my head.  Of course, this also freed me up to fill more buckets, scrape algae or whatever. You can also adjust how fast the water comes out so as to not disturb the substrate or plants.

Ah very nice, a thing of beauty......thanks for posting the pics. Maybe in the future, I can trouble you with giving me a tutorial of how to post pics.....thanks again

  5. Sodium Thiosulfate Pentahydrate. Its a crystalline dechlorinator I used in the past successfully and wondered how well kept it is as I rarely hear it discussed in the aquarium community.  If you look it up and read about it, it's found in a crystalline form (powder also) and very effective with dechlorinating aquariums and other bodies of water. Some years ago someone (can't recall who) turned me onto an inexpensive and easy to dispense chemical (Sodium Thiosulfate Pentahydrate).....I'd like to open it up for dialog with my aquarist brethren.........

I do not. I built mine with 1/2" fittings in the plumbing department at Home Depot.  If you are careful you can bend the PVC pipe into a U with a heat gun or by heating over the kitchen stove, or you can use extra fittings.

Can you post a pic ? (im gonna need time to figure out how to do that myself).

Add an in line ball valve to the hose.  I attached a U shaped pvc pipe to a ball valve, and attached that to the pump hose.  <$15  The pvc will hang on the side of the tank leaving you free to do other things.  The ball valve will stop water flow in or out of the aquarium.  This allows you to use the same setup for water changes or refills.

Awesome idea, you wouldn't happen to have a part # for that ball valve?

I just add it to the tank.  Haven’t had any issues yet.  I’ve been doing this for a long time.  When I change water in my 125 gallon I will gravel vac with tap running and pull out 25-30 gallons, add my prime or whatever and fill the aquarium.    Then start vac again …. But second time to save water.  I turn off tap and let gravity work.  It’s a little slower but I use this time to service filters, clean glass and glass lids…. I then add my prime or API Stress Coat and fill aquarium.  On this particular aquarium Changing about 50-60 gallons a week for the last 20 years…

Hummm good input Brian thanks for that. Python, perhaps I've been overkilling my procedure.....I'll have to put some research into this. 👍

I have the same one as @BAT but if I have the hose end in the tank when I unplug it it starts to syphon out of the tank. It's kind of a pain to constantly take the hose end in and out of the tank while refilling a larger tank from a 5 gallon bucket.

It really is. What I've been doing is I have a 44 gallon Brute container measured off in 5 gal increements. I fill from the tap up to the gallonage I want adjusting the temp according to what I need. If its too hot (summers in Arizona were like that) I let it sit out till it cools.  I dechlorinate and drop my Little Giant hooked to a hose thats screwed into a hose to pvc connector shaped like a U hooked around the edge of the aquarium and turn on the pump. Once the bucket is close to being empty I turn off the pump and remove my apparatus and I'm done. The pump will empty the full 44gals in less than 5mins but their going for $115. It'll last for years in fact the one I've got has been with me for over 10yrs but I've only used it for transferring aquarium water. I was just curious if there's another option but apparently not but thanks for sharing your views with me 🙂.

    Sorry no help… I use a pythons.

The Phython put chlorinated water right into the tank right? How do you dechlorinate the water if its coming straight out of the tap? Please explain.

  10. Up to now I've been using an electric transfer pump from my bucket to the tank instead of hosing it straight into the tank unconditioned. This allows me to dechlorinate and stabilize the temperature while its still in my brute container. Right now, I'm using a not so cheap Little Giant pump to fill my tank after getting the clean water prep'd. Ive got to replace my transfer pump and wonder what pump is common with those that do it this way using or is there another fluid transfer method I should be considering?

  11. Its a common Septic cleaner that does exactly what the Fluval product claims to do. I subscribe to your cleaning regimen and have for years however the only way to properly clean every nook and cranny is to remove lift tubes, decor etc and soak them in hot water. When I came across the use of RidX by aquarist I was surprised I hadn't heard it before. I'm just wondering how many members are avid users of the Fluval/RidX product and require feedback as to its viable use for me in the future. Also if its been determined that the two products are one in the same which to me is likely.

There are reports that it tends to raise ammonia levels and is offset with a dosage of bacteria at the same time. There are also reports that some have lost delicate fish like shrimp etc. Apparently since I'm not getting a lot of feedback this practice is not common and IF I'm even considering its usage to lean towards the Fluval product only for caution sake use a lighter dosage as any ammonia spike is prohibitive as far as I'm concerned. Its not expensive with a standard 1ml dosage per gallon and $10 for a 180ml bottle. RidX  is also as inexpensive which really makes me go hmmmm.

Please don't take this article as a sales pitch by any means, I'm just trying to determine how widespread its use is among aquarist so I can consider it for my personal use.
