lefty o
a couple of dwarf lily pads would put up enough pads to cover most of the top of the water surface.
Dwayne Brown
What do you mean by "plant roof"?

Maggie
I find salvinia minima to be a good alternative to what I've heard about duckweed. It's similar in appearance, doesn't grow quite as fast, but quickly covers the top (and also may require occasional removal).

Dwayne Brown
Yeah the coop sells them they never have any out in the tanks I had to ask for it and they got it out ofnthe back somewhare. Of the two I prefer water lrttuce the roots look really nice when you get tons of them on the surface cascading downwards
CalmedByFish
I'm new to the topic, but I vaguely remember something about being careful to not cover too much of the surface. Something about gas exchange. Maybe someone else can weigh in on that detail.
anewbie
I recommend you skip duckweed - it can be very difficult to remove if you dislike. Frogbit, red root floaters, water lettuce - dwarf lily banana plants are all options. Even jungle val. One issue I frequently run into is that feeding fishes can be a pia with too many floaters - the issue isn't the fish getting food - the problem is the food gets trapped in the plant and then decay. Of course it depends a bit on your stocking - in at least one of my tanks the snails and cory know where to go looking for food if they get hungry 😉
Andy's Fish Den
You have all the floating plants everyone else has mentioned, but you could also get plants like jungle val, gplant along the back and sides if you want, it will spread with runners, but also grows long, the leaves will grow up and then float across the surface. I have had them get 5-6 feet long which would reach from the substrate up and clear across a 55 gallon tank.
