Fish Folk
For readers on the Forum, this is an absolutely fascinating book. Grounded in history, but delivered with memorable, jaw dropping drama, “The Feather Thief” spans time and place telling a connected thread of tales all the way from bird collecting Naturalists of Darwin’s day, to Natural History Museum looting by obsessed Fly fishing enthusiasts... a wild, wild ride! Though it’s off topic for a fish forum, it really illuminates the background context where the Aquarium hobby got its start. Emerging from the sweatshops of the Industrial Revolution in the 1700s, Europe turned to nature with a passion that echos in our home aquariums. I think something very similar is occurring today as we’re all far too plugged in and nearly hardwired online.
Biotope Biologist
Off topic from your off topic. Psychologists have published pieces stating that without nature to look at from day to day, especially urbanites stress levels are a lot higher vs. people who incorporate some form of nature whether it be plants, aquariums, or pets into their home and work environments. We are still animals after all. I will for sure have to give this a read. It's hard finding good "naturalist" books to read.
