Jopinga206
My very first test run of a DIY wondershell. Not sure if it'll work, but I'll be testing it out in the next couple of days. I added spirulina for color and food for my snails and shrimp. Has anyone else tried this yet?

Jopinga206
Oh I forgot to mention, they only cost 2 cents to make!
CT_
I think wonder shells are primarily gypsum (hardened plaster of paris, aka calcium sulphate). in principle you could mix up whatever in with plaster of paris and add water to harden. Jopinga206
Yeah that's exactly what i used. Thanks for confirming that. I also added magnesium sulfate and potassium sulfate.
Administrators Cory Posted February 14, 2021 Administrators Share Posted February 14, 2021 I’ve done it in the past with plastor of Paris. Fry times and smell were a pain, but it did work. I ended up being to lazy to consistently make them. All it takes is spilling a tray of em once and the clean up lol
Jopinga206
Hah! Yeah I could see that happening. I'm motivated by my cheapness. I'm in federal way and the tap water is crazy soft. I'm running a drip system on 80 tanks and want something other than crushed coral to help with remineralizing. Specifically to raise my GH a bit. I also need something to slowly remineralize as the drip system will slowly change out the water. About 10% daily. This is the best solution I've come up with other than giant water storage tanks. Hobbit
You even used a little shell mold! Neat idea.
Jopinga206
Yeah, the next batch I make I'm gonna thin it out a lot more and it should set in the mold a lot smoother.. I'm gonna play with some other molds too. I would like to make some that just look like rocks or let some dry with suction cups in the back to stick to the glass. Lots of ideas.
