FriendlyLoach
Hey everyone, I have a powerhead on a sponge filter, and it is really loud, the sponge has not really ever been cleaned, maybe that is why. Also why do sponges need to be cleaned. I know I should know that, but I don't. Thanks
FrozenFins
The sponges will get clogged with fish debris, poop, etc. I just cleaned my sponge filter (first time in months, the co-op video reminded me to do so) and it was GROSS what was inside that sponge, so I would suggest to clean the sponge and you'll no exactly what I'm talking about.

Tanked
Clean and inspect the impeller inside the powerhead. Make sure that the blades and rubber cup bearings are intact.
FishyJames
I agree with checking the impeller. I have a powerhead on a large sponge filter and when the sponge gets clogged the flow is constricted but it doesn't get loud.
JaredL
I run a Marineland penguin and because of the way the impeller is designed, you get rattling when the flow is restricted. I believe this is because the impeller itself is not connected to the shaft, but allowed to spin freely. The shaft and impeller have a notch on them. When the shaft(driven by the motor) rotates to a certain point the notches make contact and the impeller is then being turned by the shaft. The rattling seems to be from the impeller and shaft notches contacting and separating repeatedly. I'm not sure if other powerheads use this design. Long story short, restricted flow could likely be an issue.
